Input lag difference between DMC 3 26 PC port and HD collection with vsync forced off?

Hello everyone,

on the DMC Speedrun wiki it says that the DMC3 in the 2018 HD collection has 1 extra frame of input delay.

Is that with the forced vsync, or with it forced off (through styleswitcher for example)? The 2006 port has no vsync, so the fact it's enabled by default in the HDC surely accounts for a big part of the lag, but not sure how much.

I'm wondering whether it still has more delay than the 2006 port even with it forced off. I would guess so, but maybe someone here has actually tested it.

On a side note, I saw that Waifu ran the HD Collection version at some GDQ and it surprised me because I figured that the input delay would make the Royal Guards problematic as the timing is different in the 2006 port. Not sure if there was a specific reason that version was played.

Thanks a lot for any replies!

The vsync doesn't matter because 2006 port works out of the box even without style switcher. It will still have better input frame than HDC. Styleswitcher mainly helps the game to be more compatible in modern PCs to run and removes frame drop or freezing whenever you enter different rooms in each mission.

Waifu ran the game with the HDC before the 06 switch because at that time he was more comfortable with it and did not want to deal with technical issues such as controller configuration.

Thanks a lot!

Does the HDC version have any advantages at all then? I know that the 2006 port doesn't have a mod for 16:9 missions screens and cutscenes (unless I missed them), and I know it's also missing some graphical effects and has some visual and audio glitches. Not that important since I care mostly about the game play, but I'm curious if the older port is better or worse in that regard. It does seem to have more intact motion blur on attacks for example. Overall I don't remember the 2006 port well enough to judge which of the games looks better, or rather less bad.

I'm interested in giving speedrunning a try, but I also want to do another SS run on DMD difficulty in the future (did it almost 20 years ago on the PS2) and would obviously like the input lag to be as small as possible. I definitely did feel it on the HDC version even with vsync off while 2006 felt close to the PS2 version from what I remember.

PS: Do you know what exactly causes the HDC to have that extra delay? I thought vsync would be the main culprit, but judging by what you said the port itself seems to be messed up in that regard while the 2012 HDC doesn't have this issue (to my knowledge).

We don't know why the new HDC has extra input lag, but it's definitely more than 1 frame. The 2012 HDC doesn't have the lag and as far as I know neither does any other version. I recommend getting the 2006 port and using the Style Switcher mod to make it properly playable. As for differences between the versions:

HDC works out of the box and has all the lighting/blur/fog effects and additional Taunt sounds, but has slower loads, lacks cutscene movement and despawns. Some camera angles behave differently as well. It also has a few extra frames of input delay, even compared to PS3/XBOX 360 HDC. Quick text skipping with gun is with Style button (pad only). Some bosses spawn on different spots. The 2006 version has significantly faster loads on windowed mode than fullscreen, whereas HDC has no difference between the modes. The acid in M8 in HDC does more dmg than in 2006. Bought Gold Orbs do not work in the 2006 version. Doppelganger can be used infinitely with keyboard inputs. The unlock all cheat (R1+R2 + L1+L2 + dpad up-left + left stick down-right) still works in HDC but doesn't allow you to save or load a file (2006 version does). The savefiles between versions are not interchangeable.

Thank you!

Wow, so the HDC PC version has even more delay than the console version. That's pretty bad.

Just tried the 2006 port with fixes and it definitely feels a million times better. The only issue is that the game crashes after the opening (before I get to the main menu) if I use the snd.drv file to remove the audio loading stutter. I couldn't find a way to fix it.

I have no idea which lighting/blur/fog effects are missing, but the effects in HDC are definitely not correct either. The blur for example is way weaker than it's supposed to be.

Did you try DisableSoundDriver=1 and ForceMode0=1 in StyleSwitcher.ini ?
