It looks like the same game yeah, the trailer promises new abilities which might cause some issues, but then it also advertises endless mode as a new feature even though that has been released for the pc version since forever. What might me good to check is whether the glitches still work in that version. And especially for the ice beam glitch using a controller is not exactly optimal. (Kinda makes me wish I owned a ps4 though, the visual update looks good.)
Now the only question is how the hell to get it where you can start a new game with PS4? I can only seem to access a fresh new game only when I play as a "guest" or make a new user. I've deleted all save data, online save data, but to no avail. Total head scratcher on this one. Would love to use my actual main PS4 user but can't figure it out lol
Edit: OK so it looks like disconnecting from the internet and then starting a local game will allow you to start with a fresh file. You should be able to connect back and be good to go after that.
Currently platform is just a field in each category, but if the PS4 version differs from the PC version, a PS4 section would be cool. I haven't ever played the PS4 version, so I can't really comment on which PC skips might not work on PS4, or if the PS4 version might even have additional skips. It will be cool to see what you all run into on the PS4 version if you're putting together runs.
All of the PC skips for the plain jane any% run seem to work for PS4. Haven't tried any of the two player drop in and drop out stuff with the elf or the NG+ strats yet. I still want to test the elf barrel skip in Bone Barracks but haven't tried to get the timing down yet. You seemed to find all of the good stuff already, Hoyt :) Thanks for making all of the videos for those skips, btw!! Haven't messed around too much with or found much luck with finding other places to use the chaos skip other, except in The Sea of Darkness for all levels any% goodness. Can get out of bounds in Dungeon of Discord but, like I'm sure you've found in other spots already, it isn't helpful as far as I can tell. I wish the Pathway 2 OOB "adventure" was more reliable (unless I'm just a dumb). Hopefully there's more to be found though.
Aiming, of course, is a little bit trickier on PS4 but it's not the end of the world. Still have yet to personally one-cycle either Khamun or the Beast but ¯_(ツ)_/¯
I found a lot of skips, but every once in a while someone surprises me with a brand new one. I've looked around out of bounds a good bit, but haven't run into any time saves since that last NG+ video. I haven't paid much attention to the extra stages for the "all levels" run, so those would be more likely to have some drop in/drop out exploits. I think Any% is pretty ripe for a serious time save, as the run is a bit old now and could probably benefit from some of the drop in/drop out tricks.
When Siopilos found the out of bounds skip in Pathway 2 I told him it was going to make all runners pull their hair out forever. There are some things you can do to help make it through the level, but if you get a bad level (like one that just goes 4 or 5 screens to the right at the start) you kind of just have to cut your losses and chaos amulet back in bounds. Getting a feel for when you need to slightly walk over a path to lose some altitude and start descending when you're going to high is important. Also, once you're under the map and descending, it's time to chaos amulet back in as soon as possible. Honestly, if you're on a good pace I would suggest not bothering with that skip if you're not comfortable with it and recovering from an unlucky level. My best time in a run with that skip is 1:45, my best time without it is 1:51, so the single-level 1:03 is fairly deceptive.
The one-cycles are definitely something I had to practice to get the timing down for. One small tip that is easy to overlook for Khamun is that you want your potion to land on his heart as well, since the potion does a bit of bonus damage on top of the damage the arrow does. On The Beast, you want to be all the way against the right wall, since his charge will knock you back and interrupt your potion if you leave a gap. Those tricks definitely seem like ones that will be harder on a controller, with the long distance shots required.
And I guess the drop in/drop out exploits don't count as "co-op" even if they require two controllers? They're so nice to have and be able to use though haha I guess technically you're still playing the whole game solo so it shouldn't matter?
We haven't counted drop in/drop out exploits as co-op so far. I know there are other games with speed runs that use multiple controllers, though I don't know how many control multiple characters that way. Definitely would be a pain if you didn't have 2 controllers though!
Added PS4 as a possible platform when submitting a run. So far we indeed have not counted drop in drop out as co-op. Hoyt and I did make a clause for ourselves that, when doing co-op, at least 2 characters must be "in" (Seen on the bottom) at all times. This hasn't officially been incorporated in the rules yet, as the head mod likes to be aware of rule changes.
That makes sense and kind of what I thought might be the case. Plus the drop-in/out stuff only seems to save relatively marginal time overall compared to alternative strats over a full run. Really neat seeing all the tricks and skips that’ve been found by everyone! :) Thanks for adding the PS4 option, btw!
