Furball only category please

Hi, I would like to request a Furball only category...!

I just completed my 1st run and others will follow my lead:

ZeroCounts, BryBad and possibly CynanMachae, too!

They will all compete in the upcoming 9 LIVES RACES I'm organizing on February 22nd 2024!

Yeah, I have a time I can upload too. :)

Where are we at on this? I read the forum thread about Dizzy and can understand the hesitation, but also, if there is a "Buster Only" category it kind of makes sense to do categories of the other characters too. Just my opinion.

Regardless, a yes or a no would be nice. :)

Yes, that is exactly my point... thank you for your support, BryBad!

Also, I want to add that while it would not be the most competitive category (because I do agree with junkyard_dave's statement about that, during our last race) this game also OFTEN wins the popularity votes (by viewers and runners alike) for each new list of games ran.

We ran this game 3 times already, so it would NOT be a dead category by any means... it would stay active.

FInally, we do this for CHARITY twice a year, so if the category became real, it would help legitimize what we are doing immensely...!

We would appreciate some kind of answer, Hirexen!

I promise that: if hirexen puts all characters in Tiny Toons, I will do buster only runs, as I'm already used to them, from Mega Man games...! pew pew pew

I will even do Dizzy runs, if I have to... because sometimes, meme runs are necessary, lol!

Just to answer here as I was contacted privately:

I'm completely neutral.

First, I'm not the moderator that setup this board, so this is my own personal opinion.

Second, if I setup the board I would have never added "Buster Only" even for fun back then, and just kept it Any%, as now it creates an awkward precedent in the future. I would actually be inclined to remove "Buster Only" and just keep "Any%" as the only category because this game, despite being based on a popular cartoon franchise, absolutely does not get speedrunners submitting runs to it. I can check, and in the entire 4(?) years that hirexen modded me, I've verified like 6 runs - and he has verified 69. That's about 7 runs a year.

Adding even more categories in my opinion is just bloat to a board that doesn't get runs to begin with.

But, I'm also neutral in the sense "Buster Only" exists.

Since it does, it doesn't make sense "Furball Only" and "Pluckie Only" and "Dizzy Only" shouldn't exist, too, but, even then "Furball Only" and "Pluckie Only" are basically identical to the Any% run, and, probably why they were never added. Any% at optimized levels, are effectively the same categories as "Furball Only" and "Pluckie Only" with very small differences.

"Buster Only" changes some strats, but again in my opinion shouldn't have ever been added as this board should have just really had "Any%" as the only category.

In order of preference of what I would personally do:

  • Remove "Buster Only" and just keep Any%. This is what I would do if I created the board.

Second choice:

  • Add all the other characters as their own separate categories but move all the categories to miscellaneous so "Any%" is the main board. Until there's a large numbers of runners, I don't think the other categories should be with "Any%" because they're never going to be competitive and just going to serve as bloat. We can see this already with "Buster Only" only having like 4 runs in 7 years. Pluckie/Furball aren't strong enough to be much different than "Any%" because that's what Any% is - both of them together, and Dizzy alone sucks as a character to play through.

Hi, Mega Man Hack speed runner here who is a proud member of the Mega Meow Militia. I'd like to counter some logic here.

#1-I think Buster Only (Tiny Toons) should be a default category because you are essentially doing either a Trevor Only run (C3) or an itemless challenge, and I think that not being able to skip the entire game using Furball and Plucky and forcing people to play the game neutral is something that should be offered at the start of the formation of the leaderboard. Along with any% and if there's a warp or skip then an all stages category is cool. There are a billion games with tons of pedantic overlapping categories (have you seen Metroid?), if the only thing holding it up is runners, well...

#2-There's already 3 runners with times, and this is an almost quarterly occuring marathon with more reach and people joining, so the odds of having more than 3-4 runners having a time for this category is going to be a certainty. Hell maybe I'll do it.

#3-This is a charity event based speed run, so trying to help that out and spread the reach of an event like this is something I feel people should want to be part of in the process of allowing it to grow, especially given that there are already 3+ runners who are active in the category, and there have been like 5+ week+long (9+ day) marathons with tons of people coming together as a community, I would think all of that combined would make this something that should happen.

Thanks for the input, Dave!

I'm also fairly neutral in full honesty, but I had been bettering my Furrball% so I could upload a decent time. I stopped the grind due to not knowing what the decision would be, so I just wanted to know where we stood with it.

I have been working on a "Buster Only" time recently, and after I got a handle on that I was going to transition into Any% and learn the normal strats, if you will. If the other categories were to be added, I would probably drop a time in each one for fun too.

Again, to clarify, I don't have much of a preference either way, but I was simply hoping for an answer of some sort. :)
