I'm thinking about trying my hand at this old game from my past but I noticed that you can run the game at a faster speed than normal if you are capable. I'll br playing at normal speeds thanks to nostalgia but I could imagine people going faster with the fast specs. Would it be a good idea to add a different category for normal speed and any speed? Just a thought.
Thanks for bringing this up. I reconsidered the rule, and I realized that game speed manipulation is a built-in feature, so why restrict it? I've allowed faster speeds for all the categories for the moment, but there aren't any "normal-speed %" categories yet.
I have realized that, outside of DOSBox, emulating MS-DOS is extremely fickle, and even on DOSBox, game speed is entirely reliant on how fast the machine performs. This gives advantage to better performing emulators. Something needs to happen to regulate that, but for now, it seems DOSBox is the best emulator for running the game, and it can get up to some crazy high speed.
Thanks for the post. All these things will be considered even more, but probably only if more people jump on the speed running bandwagon.
I've actually submitted runs for Individual Levels where I've changed the game speed during the run, and I enjoy it so much more. :)
Thought id comment. I loved this game for said nostalgia reasons, clicked the follow button a while ago. I had issue last time i tried running DOSBox with this game, i didn't look too much into it. But i am very much itching to start playing another game to run. I am also like PTO in which i do not want to run speed mods. I don't deny its a feature that's there now. It just wasn't a thing for me when i was a child playing it on actual MS-DOS. I just don't think i would enjoy the game the same with the speed mod. I'm only speaking up since its been a hot minute since i logged into here and saw the notification. Thought i'd speak up to say i'd enjoy running this game, from start to end. Or just IL runs also. I just need to take some time to actually get a stable running LodeRunner.
Yikes, It's been a while since I've checked the forums. Sadly, I never got notifications or anything for it. I'm absolutely okay with adding a category for default speed, especially if PS1 only has one speed, and for runners who want the default speed. If any runs show up with default speed, I'll add a category immediately. Sorry for the late respose, I hope that didn't cause any disinterest in speedrunning.
Alright, felt like I should write a conclusion to all of this. I completely agree with everyone here, so I've edited all categories. Runs that modify speed and runs that do not are separated in the leaderboards. Hopefully this makes the game more accessible and encouraging to run!
