Minor Rule Change Discussion

California, USA

Unrelated to the big menu storage discussion, two other proposed rule changes have come up. This thread is for discussing these proposed changes.

BANNING PRE-RUN MENU STORAGE

The proposed change is to ban storing any menus before the start of a run. This makes it so that actions in one run can't affect a separate run, except through the intended New Game+ mechanics. This topic wasn't included in the other menu storage thread because it seems non-controversial.

This rule change will be implemented on August 7 if no one has any objections.

VIDEO EVIDENCE FOR SUBMISSIONS

This point was a little more contentious. A request was made to exempt some run submissions from the video proof requirement. The argument is that for runs below a certain rank threshold or time threshold, there's not always a vital need to absolutely ensure the validity of such times.

That said, we have had the current video requirement in place since the speedrun.com leaderboard was created in 2014. It doesn't seem to have caused much of a problem in the past, and recording your runs continues to become easier. This doesn't necessarily mean that no one has been affected by this requirement, though.

Unless there are strong arguments in favor of this proposal, no changes will be made.

Banning Pre-run storage: Yes. If something intruiguing enough comes up involving previously stored menus, then maybe a meme category would arise, but for main categories the ban makes sense.

Video Evidence: I like requiring it, though if a run currently on the leaderboards has no video that's fine. The only issue I can think of is having a computer that can't record and run Bastion simultaneously, which can't be very common and will only become less of an issue as tech advances. If a specific runner can't record for some reason, I'd invite them to share their concerns though.

Ban pre-run menu storage. Keep requiring videos - revisit this if ever an actual situation were to arise.

Ban cheating, allow text-only submissions(and don't be apathetic). Everyone is already familiar with the legitimate arguments for both.

Ban pre-run menu storage, just seems dumb to have it in. Keep videos as is, no need to fix something that isn't broken

Kronoberg, Sweden

Ban pre-run menu storage if not specific category rules say otherwise. Videos should only be necessary for top 10 placements, but changing something that isnt broken might be wrong.

United States

Ban pre-run menu storage. Maybe we can make a meme category for it, but it should be banned in any other category.

I'm all for requiring videos. If we were going to allow text-only submissions, I would prefer they be past a specific time threshold: say, 20:00 for Any% and 1:10:00 for ASL or something like that. But I'd prefer to just continue requiring videos and deal with individual issues should they arise.

Canada

Ban pre-run menu storage.

Requiring videos is nice and I don't think we should change that unless someone starts running the game and cannot submit videos for whatever reason. Videos should at least steay required for top X runs.

Lithuania

Ban pre run menu storage

Require videos for top 10 or some time stamp like 15:00 any% 50:00 ASL . But as said before changing whats not broken is not necessary

Galicia, Spain

Ban pre run menu storage only keep this if we do a meme category but nothing more.

Require videos under x time stamp will be the best way i think, but at the same time if you can run a game like this in pc probably you can record it so... The same like the others changing whats not broken is not necessary

Austria

Ban pre run menu storage - yes.

As most of the people have said already, I don't think we need to fix a working system.

Since there was unanimous agreement on banning pre-run menu storage, we've gone ahead and made that change.

As far as videos are concerned, the discussion here seems pretty consistent with the opinions expressed on discord - one person feels that we should permit text-only submissions, and everyone else basically feels like there's no impetus to change. As such, it doesn't seem super likely that a change is justified. However, if anyone would like to express further thoughts, feel free.
