So, Cave Story is a great, great game. It's also a great, great game on other platforms beyond the PC. So quick question on this subject. If someone wants to do runs on another platform, can a category be opened up? Or should they submit for a new cave story game that only includes consoles and redirect PC runs to here?
Actually, looking into another topic and catching up on this game's forums answered my question. Apparently all the console versions are different enough that they aren't included here.

Yeah, original PC Cave Story is significantly different from its various rereleases, CS+, and CS3D. I don't know much about all of the different versions, but I imagine all (or most) of the CS+ releases can be grouped together in a single leaderboard. CS3D should likely be its own thing.
Some console releases didn't have a + in the name, but they had multiple save files, bug fixes (chako fireplace skip isn't possible in these releases), etc.. These were released on the DSi, 3DS, and WII.
Sorry for getting to this thread so late, let me summarize the differences.
First of all, CS+ runs at 60fps, the original runs at 50. But nicalis, only putting superficial effort into the port, did not adjust the physics to compensate for this change. As a result, the game runs 20% faster, always. Yes, this does technically make the speedrun faster, but not in any meaningful way. Its quite literally running this game on turbospeed.
They fixed some bugs, but not all the way. For example, one of the glitches that we use a bit in the run is bringing up the inventory to reset invincibility-frames. This is technically patched out in CS+, but you can still do it by bringing up the map from the inventory screen. So you make a small detour at the beginning of the run to get the map in CS+ in order to do the same glitch, but with an added step. The other bug they fixed is sister's skip (you can pick up the missiles before The Sister's fight and leave the room before the fight starts). But, they didn't patch it all the way, they just closed the timing window to be smaller before the fight starts (independent of the regular extra 10 fps). There is a really weird way to do the skip in CS+, i don't remember all the details, but it involves flying fairly high up in the room to prevent the fight from starting.
On top of that, there's no reason to play CS+ over the original. Every change that nicalis made takes away from the charm and fun of the game. And none of the sales go to pixel anyway, so you're not even supporting the real developer by doing so. If you want pixel to have your money for making this amazing game, buy kero blaster (from steam/playism)
while i do agree morally with the points presented. these are all completely irrelevant to making a separate category for faster versions.
The Switch + Version may be the fastest one since you can carry several Puppies at the same time. I hope there's going to be it's own Leaderboard/Category for the + version soon since I plan to speedrun the Switch one
I submitted a LB for + a while back, but the mods declined it because they wanted to know what the community thought of it
