Hey gang,
I believe the WR on this leaderboard should be in a different category. Here's why:
I just submitted a run timed at 2'02". @AlphaNerd did the same, timed at 2'02". This is possibly the theoretical fastest unless maybe 2'01" is possible.
The WR for this game held by @SteveZero has the music and the transition screens running significantly faster and that's the reason why he got 1'53" which is impossible to get with the European or Brazilian ROMs. My guess is that he's using a different ROM than the rest of us do? In which case I'd think it'd need its own category? Unless he found a glitch that causes the game to speed up? I've already DM'd @SteveZero about it, waiting for an answer.
I've noticed the moderator @-STAR_fox- hasn't played the game yet but that might a good time to run it so you can give your thoughts on this also.
I hope everyone has a wonderful day,
MS Marceau.
I would agree the music sounds a bit different on @SteveZero run.
I'm suspecting the "+" was pressed by accident when the backspace key was pressed to reset the game. But I think Bizhawk would display a higher number for the FPS ...
Later tonight I can compare this run with the game run on a real console
I did try to speed it up with BizHawk to see if it was sped up by accident but it indeed then displays higher FPS. So I doubt that's what happened in this case. The enigma continues :-/
The speed of the music is his run is Obvious giveaway that his version runs quicker.I know he didn't do it intentionally , but he has an obvious unfair advantage with that version. As a sub, 2 minute is definitely impossible with the regular version Everyone else is playing
His run was really weird indeed, I remember when I was grinding the game again, I had splits with his time to compare agaisnt and It seemed to be impossible to save time, no matter what I did, I did the same strats, tried to optimize as much as I could and I was still behind by a lot, even playing on Fusion (which is sighly fastser than BizHawk and it was at the time I was still running on that Emulator), so I agree that he probably used a different version of the game and that it should be moved.
I would say it should be about "is this run is valid?" instead of "should it be a different category". If not valid it should be rejected until we figure out what's the reason
One way to figure out sub 2 min is impossible is to do a TAS. I don't know the game at all, I can explore a bit tonight
Would be great to hear from @SteveZero as well
Hey guys! Sorry for all the headaches I may have caused! This was two years and a different computer ago so whatever mystery was there, I don't know if I'll be able replicate. It probably was a rom or emulator glitch as I def didn't mean to intentionally get an unfair advantage. I also def understand invalidating the run if it's impossible to replicate as I certainly don't want one of my runs to be sus at all. Sorry again y'all!
No head ach. But we definitely all noticed the difference in game speed . Glad we're able to discuss this openly. A separate category might be a good idea. Or maybe re run the game for the 202 with the normal verison. Def a honest mistake and clearly was unintentionally
We talked about it, he means"clearly unintentional". Typo. XD
A separate category might be a good idea
but what would be the category? here it's either a bad rom or something related to the emulator. If we make another category that mean other players should be able to have the same setup and compete. removing the run makes more sense, it's not a complicated run, it doesn't require many resets anyway.
did the same, timed at 2'02". This is possibly the theoretical fastest unless maybe 2'01" is possible.
I did a very quick TAS (not optmized) and I got a time of 1:59, so 2:02 is not the fastest.
I've compared the runs and put on spreadsheet. Between SteveZero and Marceau run it's not so big difference for the challenges (skateboard, snowboard, ...) but it's like 2 seconds difference between challenges, even for the TAS.
I tried different things to transition faster but couldn't figure out anything yet with the TAS. I'm guessing there are some lag reduction or frame skipping?

Unless someone can replicate it a legit way, it's not about a separate category anymore. The run just needs to be invalidated.
It was likely caused by an emulation glitch, frame skipping or some sort of BizHawk setting. We might never know.
The mod reached out to me in DM and will be taking it down.
I suggested to @SteveZero to re-submit a 2'xx" run that way he'll still have WR.
it's not a valid run, it doesn't make sense to resubmit with a different time.
I would say, redo the run with latest bizhawk (with default settings) and the right rom -> Jogos de Verao II (B) [!].sms
it's not like the run was many months of grind so IMO it's fine to redo it. Also there are zero RNG, it's just smashing, so it's not like "oh I got the best luck for this run"
Yes that's what I meant, to re-do it, when I said re-submit.
I think milliseconds will be needed, people will probably try to optimize it
