While reverse-engineering the MMX2 password system (a recent continuation of work I did with less technical means 15 or so years ago) I came across something I haven't seen mentioned on sites like GameFaqs.com or a quick scan of Google. I figured the speedrun community was probably the only remaining active community for a 25 year old game, so I'm posing the question here.
In addition to the well-known method, Ken's Shoryuken in Mega Man X2 can be obtained by combining a password with a specific button combination. On the password entry screen, set the password to one of the following: 1172 3367 6182 3246 (all obtainables except Zero parts, plus the Shoryuken) 8377 8143 6822 7651 (all obtainables plus the Shoryuken)
In order for the Shoryuken part of the password to work, the password must be submitted by holding down-left, R, B, and Y together. First move the password cursor to the bottom line of the password (above Start), then press and hold down (which moves the cursor to Start), left, R, B, and finally Y. This was tested in emulator using "Mega Man X2 (USA).sfc" (SNES, CRC 947B0355).
Is this something known to the MMX2 experts, or is this a world first discovery?
I didn't know about this, but you can do a similar method in Mega Man X to get the Hadoken using passwords. Cool find.
Very nice trick, i tested it in both american and japanese versions, worked fine. Congratulations on discovering this;
Hey, sorry to necro a thread.. but I was curious if you could share more details on how you came across the button combo? It was awesome for me to find out something I didn't know about a game I loved as a kid. After seeing your post on another site, I tried to find the source of the combo and finally found you lol. Then i looked into info for the original 3 x games to find if there was such a combo for the others as well. Seems x1 and x2 have these combos, and I'd like to try to find something similar for x3. Thanks in advance, and awesome work!
