Are there any notable differences between the two? What is the common/recommended version for runs?

Not sure if there is much difference but GOG version has more resolutions and better compatibility

Long ago, the Steam version lacked a file, preventing the game from even starting.

GOG version never had this issue however.

I think they might have fixed it on Steam since then (it's really been a long time).

Overall though GOG has more resolutions and better compatibility yeah, i'd recommend getting that one instead.
