How is it determined? Does the game calculate the results based on on-track positions or is it completely random? For example if I wreck someone at the start will he be guaranteed a bad position?

Today I did some testing and to me it seems that the game somehow calculates the results based on the car positions on track but there is some rng involved, too. In my experience the car positions on track matter somewhat but there is also something else.
