I'll look into this.

I'm not familiar with what DOS emulators are generally accepted for speedruns, so I'll have to do some research first.

TASes time their runs differently than speedruns do. A TAS starts time with power-on and ends time with last input.

Considering this is a fairly simplistic game, I don't see how having one more move during modeling would make a difference, even in 100%.

Also, you can edit your run to change the category.

I know someone recently requested this version be a separate category/board. I really don't see how the game is different enough to warrant this. I realize they're separated on the boards right now, but that was another mod that did it, and I don't agree with the decision. I am, however, always open to discussion about a game and how it should be handled on the boards. I would love for this thread to be the place we can all discuss this. For or against, I want to hear from anyone interested in offering their thoughts.

After a little bit of research, I would say that the NT is okay for speedrunning Barbie Super Model.

For speedrunning in general, my concern would be how it emulates lag, but that's not something that ever comes up in this game, so it should be fine.

I can certainly add it.

How is the game different than the SNES/Genesis version? Does it run at a different frame rate? Does it have levels that the other versions don't or vice versa? Etc.

I need to know if it's different enough to get its own category or if it can be grouped together with the others and just be another option of platform.

What is the point of playing it at a different fps?

Basically, any sort of change from what the native hardware was running is considered a no-no. When original hardware can't be played (as in the case of GBA games), we have to make sure we're using settings that are as close as possible to it.

I know I both responded to this thread and added the category way back when . . . Must have been around the time of one of the last security resets of the site.

I'll add it again. If I'm remembering correctly, the only additional requirement to any% is collecting all the discs.

Feel free to let me know of any other comments or suggestions :)

Yeah, I get that that can be frustrating. Certainly, if I ever edit the rules in anyway, I'll make a forum post about it.

Massachusetts, USAKyhYang6 years ago

My understanding is that the mod who added the rule did so in all the boards where they were a mod.

I can't speak for them as to the "why", but I would assume it's a measure toward preventing cheating in general and not to specifically stop someone on this particular board.

I have had someone raise concerns over the rules for emulators. In the rules, it says: "For emulator runs, please state the name & version of the emulator used in your submission. Smartphone emulators are banned." While I did not write the rules myself, I feel that this portion is reasonable and takes little time and effort on the runner's part to include. If you take issue with the rule, please feel free to say something here. Thanks!

I don't understand your reasoning, puchiedarcy. If the purpose is to raise interest in the game, why not just use the run that you do have recorded, which you posted in the other thread? Having an actual video to follow would also support your claim of wanting to offer a "starting point to show people what is achievable and what to aim for". People are more likely to watch a run than to go into the forums to find information.

Also, is the simple fact that you're the mod make it okay to say that your particular circumstance is acceptable? Would you take a run I submitted w/o a video but stated that two other runners witnessed it? If so, that negates your statement of requiring video. If not, then are you the sole person determining what contexts and circumstances work? The point I'm trying to make is that if you're going to allow exceptions, it puts you on the line personally, as the mod. It will beg the question of "why them but not me?". This will lead toward exclusion rather than inclusion of the hobby, which goes against what you seem to be conveying in your post of wanting more interest in the game.

I'm so glad there is a page for this game now!

I do have concerns about a run not having video proof though.

Certainly, not a stab at the runner personally, but on principle, I don't think it's a good practice for a leaderboard to be doing this. A runner's fastest official time should be whatever they have video of.

I am open to discussion, of course.

I'm not looking to benefit anyone. I'm not trying to put down the PAL runner. There is nothing personal about my argument. I'm just trying to discuss a general point that I think is integral to speedrunning.

I don't agree that the simple fact that a version of a game naturally running slower is deserving of its own category. It doesn't matter if we're talking about different regions or different consoles or whatever else. If it's the same game, same gameplay, same strats, same spawns, etc., I think it should be the same board.

Absolutely everyone should run the versions they want. My issue isn't what version he runs, it's that it has its own separate board. I know of no other leaderboard that separates versions with the exact same gameplay. For example, games where text from one region may run faster or cutscenes shorter, they aren't each put on their own leaderboards, everyone is listed under the same one because it's still the same game. Rather than the Kung Fu PAL board signifying that there is a difference with that version of the game, it is essentially an 83.3% Speed category.

The Blaster Master board: http://www.speedrun.com/Blaster_Master is a great example of a reason to have separate boards for each region as each version has speedrun tech and tricks unique to itself.

Forgive my ignorance, but isn't it easy enough to just get an NTSC setup? I don't see how this is much different from people running a particular version of a game because it's faster or like making time adjustments to a run depending on your setup to run gameboy games.

It's just that something irks me about having a separate board for a game when the only difference is the speed the game runs at.

Just curious about how PAL Kung Fu is different.

My understanding is that it runs at a different frame rate/speed, which is slower than NTSC. After watching JoshKeys' run, it appears to be the same game otherwise.

I'm wondering why it has it's own board if it's not actually a different game.

Thanks in advance!

Time starts on character control. Time ends as soon as screen fade starts on the last screen.

I'll see if I can add these rules to the page! :)

Let me know if you have any other questions.
