This task looks really cool - a quick Q tho, when does timing end for each of the objectives, if they were to be done last? For example, if I did the owl last, would timing stop as soon as I hit it? or would it stop when the cutscene ended? And same question for the chest and HP
These are mostly positives, sorry to be so optimistic
I actually really liked our little space we had in the kayam. Sure it was noisy with the stage stuff going on but that didn't really stop us at all and we certainly made it our home.
Stream area setup: I really liked the stream setup at this event, I feel it had many positives. (Planks really did an incredible job at this event)
- The big TV facing towards the crowd with the stream picture on it was a really good idea and I feel it helped out a lot with drawing in attention from those around.
- Planks did an amazing job of setting up the stream and we had (from what I saw), pretty much no big problems with setting up each game that we streamed. (It was also the first time I played my game with RGB cables and it looked so nice)
- The seating setup, while not great in terms of the number of seats provided, was quite good as it allowed people to sit down on the back row of seats and watch a bit of whatever game was on. Helped draw in the crowd just a tiny bit more.
- The webcam setups were great. the webcam up on the mic stand which was overlooking the practice area/beezycam was a really nice touch too.
- Mic setups were great once again, we had good equipment so I guess that was to be expected.
- Having 3 or 4 people with experience on the streaming PC helped out, Planks still did most of it but there were always others around to help if it was needed (which was occasionally).
- One thing I would say is that we could've done with some bigger, better speakers since the small ones didn't really do the job well enough with all the traffic of people going on around us (and I expect there will be just as much general noise in the building at the next event too). Of course, we were working with limited car space and all our own equipment so It's understandable that we couldn't have this bit perfect. It wasn't easy to hear the streamer talking from the back of the audience though (which is where most spectators were). I feel like it would attract a lot more people if the audio was louder and clearer, so maybe some nice big speakers next year?
- As already mentioned, more seats (and a couch)! From the viewpoint of multiplay, I can understand that they probably didn't think we needed that many seats. At first we probably didn't come across to them as one of the groups which would be as successful as we were.
Practice area:
- Really good
- I feel like we all did a really good job of bringing TVs and consoles, there was never a shortage of any of that stuff. As somebody who has been to ESAs where it's been hard to find a TV some of the time, it was so nice knowing that we would pretty much always be able to set up and practice whenever we wanted.
- Beethoven
- Being able to sleep in there
- Having a railing to hang our towels on
- 'Speed Runners Zone'
Camping:
- It was fun having that field to camp in since it meant we were able to sit and drink together at night which isn't something that we normally get to do. (Even if we did get ambushed by drunk kids)
- Nice ground to put tents up in (flat and soft)
- Quite far from the venue
- Not great security in terms of personal belongings being left in tents (though luckily nobody had a problem with that)
- No showers at the campsite
General/insomnia feedback:
- Lots of fun, and really nice to finally have an official UK event (about time too). For a long time there hasn't been anything really which is such a shame considering the UK's speedrunning presence.
- Free attendance and camping was incredible, I actually wasn't expecting that at the time but I guess that's one of the benefits of holding this at a gaming festival as big as this one.
- Being allowed to stay until late in the kayam by the security was pretty cool too.
- Nice having a safe place to keep all our equipment over night.
- Venue and camping were too far away. I felt this about the most recent ESA too and I'm well aware it's a really tricky thing to get right. I know this is really down to insomnia rather than Flicky and Planks but maybe if Insomnia are planning on having a separate sleeping hall/space for exhibitors and/or people taking part in the event then maybe we could get a piece of that... I doubt that though. A thing to point out here: almost everyone who attended Insomnia this time round were runners. This means that we don't have experience with people coming for the speedrunning area next time who aren't going to run anything. I don't know how much that will change things, but it was certainly a lot easier that none of us had to queue up in the main line to attend.
One last point
Flicky and Planks: I just want to say a huge thanks to Flicky and Planks for organising this event. I think I speak for everyone when I say it was one of the most fun events I've been to in a long time. Big thanks to Planks for the info before the event and for sorting out all the tech stuff and making the stream work out very well during the event. Big thanks to Flicky for sorting out all the schedule stuff and providing us all with the info we needed.
Insomnia55 attendees: I loved hanging out with every single one of you. You're all amazing and I can't wait to see you again in future events.
Future Insomnia attendees: If any of you reading this post are thinking about joining the next Insomnia event but you're not quite sure, please do it. I cannot stress enough how much fun this event was and how friendly everyone is, we will not let you feel excluded or left out. It doesn't matter where you live (we had two attendees from outside the UK this time), if you can make it to the event we would love to see you there.
So is the entrance to the campsite from the road directly next to it? I assume so. Either way, I'm sure i'll find it.
@JackOfHearts: I've sent you a twitch PM with some info about us meeting up to get a taxi, I don't know what sites you do/don't check regularly so I'll just let you know here.
@JackOfHearts: I'm going to be arriving at the coach station at 8:55 on Friday morning, I could maybe find you and get a taxi with you. I also need to find out what Cerberus is doing because we were also syncing our travel times.
I'll have a big bag full of camping stuff, consoles and an HDTV so however we get there it'll need to have space for that.
To be honest, I was considering just catching a bus. Is anyone familiar with Coventry and knows what bus(ses) I would need to take?
