Hi Everyone!
First and foremost, if you want to stay up to date on Cat Quest speedrunning, we highly encourage you to join the discord. That’s where most of the discussions go on and if you want to be part of that, you need to be there.
Rule Changes:
The biggest rule change we’ve added was that there is now a Turbo subcategory for the game. A number of runners have indicated that the mashing makes multiple attempts difficult, so we wanted to have an option for those of us that don’t really like to mash. However, the old leaderboards without Turbo are still available for the purists out there.
This option is available for all of the different game modes.
New Categories:
We have also added Mew Game categories to the leaderboards. Right now, the only options are Furry Armored, Stronger Enemies, Naked Cat, and Level One. 9 Lives does not change the run, so you can use that option during runs if you’re trying to farm Old Master gear. We also don’t have combination modifiers, but we can change that if there’s interest.
Board Cleanup:
As part of the new rule change, I had to manually update all of the existing runs as No Turbo. As part of that process, I did not update any runs that no longer had video evidence available. If your run wasn’t added to the new board, make sure you still have the video available and we can update the run for you.
If you have any questions (or are hoping for faster verification), please use the discord. The SRC moderation panel is terrible for notifying moderators, so if you ping us on the discord, you’re more likely to get a faster response.
Thanks!

Based on discussions in the discord, we are adding the ability to use turbo for this run. This is primarily being added to ease the pain of mashing text, as the mashing cadence required tended to limit the number of runs a runner could do comfortably.
Instead of blowing up the leaderboards with the first turbo runs added, we are going to put a 2 week moratorium on verifying runs that use turbo. After two weeks, moderators will start reviewing accepting turbo runs.
If you are using turbo, please make it clear in the submission and select the Turbo option. We'll know if you're using turbo. We're trying to make the game as accessible as possible and it's possible that turbo will trivialize or break the speedrun in ways we can't anticipate. Documenting whether turbo is used will help us split the board in the future if we decide to do so.
If you have any comments or feedback on the use of turbo in the run, please come to the discord to discuss it, as you're more likely to get a response from a moderator there.
I think it's a relatively new feature (Added Jan 1st or something)
We selected this game for Obscure Speedruns Club a few months back and had a few people interested. If you send them to me I'll put them up for grabs in that server.
Or you can hand them out there yourself, if you're interested! https://discord.gg/RSSUPXH
Thanks for the suggestion!
I had toyed with the idea of it, but wasn't sure if anyone else would be interested. I'll go ahead an do it.
I'm surprised to hear about bug improvements, because I basically never ran into any issues aside from the IG timer not being active during pause and cycling time.
While misc categories are often used for arbitrary stuff, I think it's also important to note that the Death Abuse speedrun is really uninteresting, is extremely reset heavy, and isn't the run you want new players to start with. I don't have a problem with the other changes - it's just that the death abuse glitch removes 99% of the run. If a category isn't a good demonstration of the game, and doesn't help grow the community, the Misc category is a perfectly fine place to put it.
I am not sure if glitched% is the appropriate term, but I wouldn't go with any% either. The problem is that the death abuse glitch takes away pretty much all of the novelty in the game that comes with figuring out how to play each squad. Since all the other categories are named by the team, any% has less meaning if people don't dig into the rules.
I would just make the category "Death Abuse" (no need for the %), and perhaps make it a miscellaneous category.
As for the version differences, the leaderboard is already too fractured to be readable. Adding a designation for old patch vs current patch would make things worse. I think the proper thing to do would be to have people include what patch the run was made on.
It's been a while since I've played this. Do you know if any other changes were made that would help/hurt the speedrun? If no new improvements were made, it might be worth documenting how to downpatch the game.
So, this game is pretty fun, but the fastest way to complete it is to do as little drumming as possible, since it adds time to the score screen.
I think we should have some categories that encourage playing the game, so I added B, A, and S rank versions.
Any complaints on that? Any ideas for other categories?
It only ended up adding 3 seconds to your two runs. Mine was already timed with credits, since I forgot the stop time.
Alright, I'll retime the runs with the new timing. Fungisoup, since you didn't skip the cutscene, I'll see how long it takes when you skip the cutscene and add that on.
The reason I don't want to do last hit, is that avoiding achievements saves you time in every other stage. If you just go by the last hit, than that doesn't matter in Finally Finals.
I think I want to bring the start and stop time in line with the first and last inputs that matter, so I'm going to set them at selecting the difficult and at the end of the final cutscene skip (leading into the credits).
I can adjust times manually, but I didn't want to do it without input from the other runners. Thoughts?
Can we get a specific start and stop time for the run? And can we also specify the turbo settings for the Any% category?
2 island is effectively any%, and 4 island is effectively 100%. 3 Island is neither, which is why no one cared about it.
Any% and 100% easy and hard.
That's why I like the start button. It's the last menu input before the game (a common start technique), allows for a better countdown to start, and happens before any tactical information is available.
If we're going to go RTA, let's at least make it easy to start the timer.
