A mini FAQ of DS vs PSP version on GTA Chinatown Wars.
Release window:
- The DS version was released in March 2009
- The PSP was out 7 months later in October 2009.
Input
- The DS version uses a mixture of buttons and touch screen commands
- The PSP version only uses buttons, so there's a good amount of tweaks during the mini-game events.
Select button command.
- The DS version is used to interact with trash bins, drug dealers, activate Taxi/Vigilante/Ambulance
- The PSP version is tweaked slightly, a quick tap brings up the weapon select menu. The interaction command requires the select button to be HELD for a few seconds.
Load times.
-
The DS version is nearly instant, auto save speed is instant, the character's bgm theme is instant as soon as you start up a mission.
-
The PSP version via UMD is notably longer. For example the Auto save 'saving' message takes a few seconds before you can gain control again, the character's bgm theme takes a few seconds as soon as you start up a mission.
Number of missions
-
The DS version has 58 story missions, and 2 'not so DLC' missions. Those 2 extra missions are NOT required to complete for 100%
-
The PSP version has 63 story missions as 5 of them are brand new and are exclusive to the PSP. The 2 extra missions are in this game as well.
Notable mini-game changes
- Molotov making and Tattoo mini-games are notably different inbetween the 2 versions.
DS making Molotov:
- You can control the hose of the gas pump in any direction by using the stylus, as soon as the bottle is filled up to the top, you have to manually put the hose away
PSP making Molotov:
- A few major tweaks has been made. Firstly you can only control the hose in 2 directions (left and right) and as soon as the bottle is filled up to the top, the game puts the hose away automatically.
DS Tattoo:
- You have to trace over the dragon mark and it does take a while until the game think you've done the majority of it.
PSP Tattoo:
- Uses the circle pad and perform a series of quarter circle motions, in a way similar to Jet Set Radio. Execution is way easier and probably faster than the DS version.
Assembling a Sniper rifle
-
DS ver: You have to assemble the sniper piece by piece by using the touchscreen.
-
PSP ver: After pressing the X button to open up the case, you have to use the circle pad and follow a series of quarter circle motions, similar to Jet Set Radio.
Both DS and PSP version supports the save glitch, PSP has a harder time opening up old 'new' e-mails after completing a mission via save glitch.
