Hello! I'm going to list a few changes that could help the Descent I & II speedrunning pages look more organized. The current state of the website shows that many arbitrary categories were created over time while the rules section is missing important topics. Stumbling upon a game where the categories look all disorganized or abandoned with broken links can be discouraging for new runners and most important less rewarding to run.
When we first open Descent I speedrun page what we see are five full game categories (Any%, All Hostages, All Levels, Shareware Run, and 2 player co-op any%) Basically most of the tabs are about completion percentage while the filters hold the rest of the run settings, which is good, but it could be better. I'd have them like this: -any% -rescue% -100% -coop any% -coop rescue% -coop 100%
Nothing to say about Any%. Rescue% is just how I say Full Rescue. The new category here would be 100% which is maybe better known as "max", an extremelly important full game category to have in my opinion given there are already existing runs of this kind in YT. I omitted "All levels" because it is not only an uninteresting category to play but also the only run (demo) of this category was submitted to a site that (according to my browser) doesn't exists anymore, correct me if I'm wrong. As for the "Shareware Run" (Level 1 to 7 in one go) in my opinion it should go where the level selection is, that would get rid of the need to create more new tabs in case someone decides to run the shareware segment while rescueing hostages for example, not to mention we could also bring into the site a very good "max" run by Marvin of the shareware segment already existing on YT.
The most messy part is in my opinion the Individual Levels section. Aside from adding "Shareware Run" here as if it was another IL, I'd try to make it look more like the full game leaderboard, because having difficulty settings in tabs where for example "any%" is also present, is not good. It should just be like "any%", "rescue%" and "100%" with all the other run settings in the filters, to once again, get rid of the need to create more arbitrary tabs in case someone decides for example to run a level on trainee while going for full rescue bonus or running a level on insane without doing death warps or killing all robots.
To summarize it a bit, what I suggest is having only completion percentage in the tabs and leaving every other run setting for the filters (glitches, difficulty, and deaths) Also if a runner plays two categories, runs should not "overwrite", many game pages with multiple categories work like that.
Descent II page is not a different story, and for obvious reasons I'd make a whole new page for each expansion (Vertigo, Maximum) A download link for each expansion should be present to make sure everyone runs the same version.
The rules need updates too, and since there would be only three tabs (all of them for completion percentage settings) I'd just put all the necessary info in "Game Rules". I'll just write down below an example with details:
-Game Rules-
Verification:
Please submit demo file or video for verification. If the videos/demos are removed or no longer accessible, the run is subject to removal from the leaderboard.
Helpful to show the IGT leaderboard time in the vid or as a screenshot with the submission.
No pausing.
(With the incoming release of Redux 1.1 with an auto recording system integrated I think demo uploads should be obligatory given how easy it is to just use map editor to make the game easier...)
Sourceports:
Redux 1.0
Rebirth 0.58.1 - (Newer versions are not aimed at preserving gameplay fundamentals, for example, enemy homing missiles are nerfed) Uncapping mouse speed is NOT allowed; disabling thief bot features is NOT allowed.
Run Settings:
- Completion Percentage
Any% - finish a level as fast as possible.
Rescue% - rescue all hostages in the level.
100%/"max" - rescue all hostages, grab all 1-ups and destroy all robots in the level (to keep the gameplay fluid any robot spawned from a matcen is not required for 100%.
- Deaths
Deathless - complete a level without getting destroyed or doing save/loads.
With Deaths - complete a level while doing death warps or save/loading.
- Glitches
The only known glitches are the boss freezing exploit and the hostage door save/load glitch.
So that is all for now, I hope everything is more or less clear. I know it is a very big work, but changes are really needed now that there are still very few runs submitted, otherwise it would be much worse. I will happily do this for you if you don't have time to :) Also I hope my poor english doesn't make me sound aggresive lol
