Since the rules already ban 1.0/1.1 glitches on emu, as well as 1.0/1.1 inject for VC, it would only make sense to officially ban GIM on emu as well.
If a way gets found to prevent GIM from crashing the game on N64, emu players should still be required to use the accurate plugin.
its probably just cause im very new to the community, but i dont really understand why tons of stuff is banned for Emu. i currently have to use emu cause i dont have a capture card and dont have really any money to buy one as of right now, and im sure plenty of other people are in the same boat as myself. so why ban even more stuff for emulators? like i said im very new to the community and speedrunning itself so maybe im just missing something.
I just recently switched from emu to VC, and I really don't understand this train of logic.
GIM is not a 1.0/1.1 exclusive glitch, so why ban it? The fact that it only works on VC technically makes it a 1.2 exclusive glitch, right? Yeah, emu is faster than N64, but the only console that can use GIM is VC anyway, which is significantly faster than emu. Allowing emu players to use GIM gives them literally no advantage over VC. The game runs slower than VC, the pause buffering is terrible (and slower) compared to VC. So banning it would just be punishing emu players for no good reason, imo.
Like, I could be missing something super obvious (and please correct me if I am), but it just seems like the community already punishes emu players enough without banning stuff arbitrarily like this.
No. As said, emulator is at a disadvantage in every aspect compared to VC, and after having played on GC for a while it seems about the same. Additionally, the glitch is not made possible by a specific version but hardware limitations (Crashes on N64 1.2.) I don't see why it should be banned when emulator runs don't even show up on the leaderboards by default.
It's important to keep things as legit as possible, that's something I learned from TASing. Obviously, complex games like OoT will require more rules than others, that's something you can't avoid.
Technically, banning GIM on emu is less arbitrary than banning 1.0/1.1 tricks on it.
There are already ways to do GIM on n64 without crashing the game. For example, Light Arrows in BoTW. You can also prevent crashes by tweaking with the camera a bit to unload things around you, iirc. So I don't agree with you that it should be banned on emu, it works on all versions, just not in every circumstance.
The reason 1.0/1.1 is banned on emu is because it is basically a faster version of N64. By banning 1.0/1.1, it essentially makes emulator into slower version of VC, rather than a faster version of N64. This means that nobody running on consoles is at a disadvantage to emulators (at least, that's the way I see it).
Under that train of thought (emu is slower VC, not faster N64), there's no reason for GIM to be banned, since it works on VC.
I didn't know that there were some cases that allow GIM to work on N64, that's indeed a good reason why the trick should be allowed on emu. This also makes sense if the community tries to treat emu like a slower version of VC, Personally, I disagree with this and would at least try to stop people from deliberately using inaccurate plugins, but that's up to the community. If we ever get an actually good N64 emulator (we can still dream, can't we?), things will change anyway.
i dont see a reason why Emu should be banned entirely @Kryptek , it already doesnt even show up on the leaderboards by default and is almost always less optimal and slower. But back to the discussion, i dont think GIM should be banned for Emu. it adds another unnecessary handicap to emu players. but of course i am biased because i currently use emulators.
Banning GIM for emu won't get you any further. What is stopping people from doing runs with it? They can just do that and not submit their runs.
@Kryptek: I don't see a reason for banning emu as alot of people start on emu before making a switch to console or buy their capture equipment. A game like OoT with a pretty big leaderboard shouldn't disencourage people who use emu.
Late to the conversation here, but it's banned on emu because it requires a different graphics plug in for it to not crash. So you have to modify the default settings for it to work. Its like hardware modification except it's software.
how is it banned? emu runs just don't show up by default. http://www.speedrun.com/run/6yjp81dy this was on the leaderboards for the longest time lol
Recently, many longer runs submitted as Twitch highlights have had parts of their audio muted due to Twitch's automatic copyright detection, the most frequent case being long sections of Lost Woods music. Some vods will even give a network error at these parts which can cause several minutes of foot
