I usually play on a nes classic, but if I ever do submit a time, are emulators allowed? What ones do people use? Is there anything else I need to keep in mind?

As we are on the topic of emulators: I suppose it is not normal that the game starts slowing down immensily on a world map encounter once 2-3 wolfes spawn? I am playing with the default settings on Nestopia, do I maybe have to change something?
