Please understand that verification is a volunteer effort, and there may be ebbs and flows in the verifier throughput. Regardless, the verifier team aims to have runs verified no later than three weeks after submission in order to comply with speedrun.com verification rules.

Astonishingly, one of our community members who likes to dig around in the game files has very recently found a file named pt_official.bptdef (a spreadsheet embedded in the game package) that contains a list of the checkpoints, in order, that represent the "intended" route through the game. So we could make a category based on that and it would represent the "canon" route. Please make a thread in community-suggestions in the Discord if you'd like to talk further, thanks.

@njsc I recommend watching @Satorha or @Oopla's runs instead, since they're bound to be similar. The list below represents everyone we currently have running seam pseudo / E.M.M.I. Warp for world record contention right now. (Edited to correct Arkandy's Twitch channel)

We've confirmed that a Discord-wide policy forcing expiration on their external links is on the way (h/t SRC user Mayberry). Looks like the free ride is over.

Rules update (as of 8/15/2023)

Due to recent discoveries that Home button abuse can artificially inflate the In-Game Timer, we have rewritten the Run File section of the rules to be more clear regarding what constitutes a valid file:

If, after the first loading screen after pressing "Continue" in the Load Game menu has passed, Samus is in the Artaria "Basement" (see pic for reference), your run file is considered valid for leaderboard purposes.

Also, we want to take a moment to remind everyone of the honor system thresholds, with the goal of allowing runners to breathe a little easier if the video footage they've collected isn't verifiable for some technical reason. These apply to all difficulties.

 • Any%: Video is required if the run places higher than 30th place AND the RTA time is faster than 1h 30m 00s
 • 100%: Video is required if the run places higher than 15th place AND the RTA time is faster than 2h 00m 00s
 • All Bosses: Video is required if the run places higher than 15th place AND the RTA time is faster than 1h 45m 00s
 • Minimalist Routes (0%, Minimum Items, etc): Video is always required
 • Category Extensions: Video is always required
 • Boss Rush: Video is required if the In-Game Time is faster than 8m 00s

Take care.

Hey there, we just wanted to let you know about the upcoming All Bosses No Major Glitches tournament. We're pleased to be able to partner with SpeedGaming to hold another tournament showcasing Metroid Dread.

Here are a few things you should know:

Before the tournament begins, there will be eight qualifier matches.

Qualifier heat schedule (all times are in US Eastern)

Two heats on Saturday August 5th, 2023: 3:00pm / 8:00PM Two heats on Sunday, August 6th, 2023: 3:00pm / 8:00PM

Two heats on Saturday August 12th, 2023: 3:00pm / 8:00PM Two heats on Sunday, August 13th, 2023: 3:00pm / 8:00PM

Quals:

 • You must join racetime.gg and you must stream your run live on Twitch.
 • You must participate in at least two heats. You can participate in more than two if you would like. In fact, we encourage it because your best time from the qualifiers will determine what bracket you will be placed in, so the more runs you post results in, the better chances to seed higher. Based on your performance, you will be placed into one of two brackets, Mawkin (upper bracket) or Thoha (lower bracket).

Brackets:

 • All runners are required to join the SpeedGaming Discord server and state they're participating by posting in the #dread channel.
 • The ruleset for the category will be the same as the ones found here on speedrun.com. (https://www.speedrun.com/mdread?h=All_Bosses-No_Major_Glitches-Rookie&x=ndx3qjod-dlorordl.810d8m2l-6nj5x4el.jqzzn7gq)
 • All runners are required to run on Rookie Mode
 • Runners may make an ad hoc agreement ("gentleman") to increase the difficulty level or run All Bosses Glitchless. Dread Mode is not allowed, and making a gentleman's agreement to All Bosses Unrestricted, while extremely cool and rad, is also not allowed.
 • When the tournament begins, all matches will be 1v1. Scheduling will be decided by the players, but a date must be selected before a given timeframe. For those who lose their match, you will fall to the loser's bracket, where you will have one more chance to win. If you lose in the loser's bracket, you are eliminated from the tournament. Better luck next time!
 • We encourage all runners to show up 10 minutes early for the qualifiers and for the rest of the tournament. This helps the staff and admins out greatly.
 • During the qualifiers, four people will be chosen at random to be showcased on one of the SpeedGaming channels on Twitch.
 • There's a prize pool for this tournament! As of this forum post, we're at a prize pool of $111.43; if you want to contribute further to the pool, click this link: https://sglive.speedgaming.org/

Take care, and See You Next Mission.

Looking good. Please keep in mind that this turbo fire rate is too fast for the merged (non Boss Rush) leaderboards. We're trying to find workarounds to this that will bring the Ultimate down below the leaderboard cap (most controllers allow you to return them for a full refund no questions asked if you return them within a certain time period). I thought I would let you know in case board legal turbo was a dealbreaker for you. Since you didn't mention it in your original post, I didn't consider that as part of the recommendation. Other than not being turbo legal, it's a fantastic controller that should last you years.

Hey there, the controller I personally recommend is the 8BitDo Ultimate Bluetooth Controller. I play Splatoon 3 (gyro) with it just fine and it has Hall effect sticks, which means no stick drift.

Please see this guide for more information on quality controllers that are well-suited to this speedgame: https://www.speedrun.com/mdread/guides/csy4t

Hey there, we have some news from the Discord. We want to hold more events where we focus on specific categories, and so we're starting something we're calling a Season. Since the All Bosses No Major Glitches tournament is coming up, our first Season is going to be focused around that category.

This Season is divided into two parts: free play and tournament play. During free play, we'll be holding events, such as clinics and races, to bring new runners into the fold. We'd be flattered if you would join us in the Discord during this time. We'd particularly like to draw your attention to the two clinics we're holding on Saturday July 15 and Saturday July 29. During these clinics, you'll learn the ins and outs of the category and be better equipped to compete (and with a little luck, win) races and tournaments.

(all times are in US Eastern)

Week 1 Friday, July 14, 2023 9:00 PM: Race 1 Saturday, July 15, 2023 3:00 PM: Clinic 1 Sunday, July 16, 2023 12:00 PM: Race 2

Week 2 Friday, July 21, 2023 9:00 PM: Race 3 Saturday, July 22, 2023 3:00 PM: Race 4

Week 3 Friday, July 28, 2023 9:00 PM: Race 5 Saturday, July 29, 2023 3:00 PM: Clinic 2 Sunday, July 30, 2023 12:00 PM: Race 6

Week 4 Friday, August 4, 2023 9:00 PM: Race 7 Saturday, August 5, 2023 3:00 PM: Race 8

Starting August 2023, we're going to be partnering with Speedgaming to hold a tournament for All Bosses No Major Glitches!

Here's what we know so far:

We'll let you know when we have more information.

Please join us as we celebrate our speedgame; we would love to have you.

You could just use LiveSplit separately and not include it in your footage. You'll still know, but it just wouldn't be on your video. An RTA timer is not required to be in your footage for your run to be verified.

Also, if your run isn't at the top of the leaderboard, chances are you don't even need video. See the individual category rules for the cutoff for each category.

Denver, CO, USAjay_yeen1 year ago

No good way right now. Members of the community were working on an autosplitter, but that never came into being. The only (copyright-legal) thing you can do right now is estimate what your time would be on digital, and that varies per category.

If you tell me what category you're running, I'll do you a solid: I'll take the time from the WR of that category and remove the load times, then tell you what that time is, so you have an easier way of comparing.

Edit: I'll also try to furnish some example pictures for AutoSplit, but again, I need to know the category.

The physical copy has the longest load times: using a digital copy saves around three or four minutes over the course of the run, depending on the category.

You want the game file on your internal flash memory, as this results in the shortest load times. Loading from SD is slightly slower than internal flash, but nowhere near as slow as physical.

Wanted to bring this to your attention: there is a poll currently out on renaming the No Major Glitches category, in the wake of the discovery of Short Boost / Air Walk. The poll will be open until Monday, May 23 at 03:59 AM GMT.

There is also a question on the poll about merging NMG with Unrestricted, this question is present strictly to gauge popularity; no action will be taken based on the results at this time.

https://forms.gle/JGV959CFKeGTKKiJ8

NOTE: For questions, go to the Metroid Dread Speedrunning Discord, link https://discord.gg/BdmYr5TRGT. I don't manage the form and am not involved in administering the vote, I can't answer your questions.

From the poll contents itself:
Why does this matter? The name of NMG is subjective and varies from person to person. When the category was created, no set of rules or definitions were implemented leading to various discussions over what constitutes a major glitch. This discussion has been brought forward again with the discovery of short boost and air walk. In an effort to facilitate decision making for the category, a name change to the category has been proposed.

Points to consider:

 • Removal of major/minor declarations from decision making.
 • Trick allowance based on category rules and definitions or based on community desire and route intentions.
 • Future tricks and strategies and their potential impact on the category.
 • How you define the category and what you think it’s intentions are or should be.

Please note that this is a separate poll from short boost and air walk. We'll be posting a poll for this in the coming days.

A two-thirds majority, discounting neutral votes, will be required of the results to result in a change of the name for the category.

The final question regarding the board merger IS FOR INFORMATION GATHERING PURPOSES ONLY! A merger of the boards is not currently being considered, but the topic has been brought forth by the community several times recently so we are gauging community interest.
can you post a video of you moving your left stick in circles a few times in the Switch analog calibration menu?
that’s surprising that your 8bitdo Pro2 sticks aren’t good. Mine are perfect. I’d say they even rival the pro controller’s sticks. This isn’t subjective, I’ve checked it in the calibration section of the setting pane. As many noted, however, the stick placement is not ideal for metroid dread. Maybe reach out to their support and get new sticks if you think there’s a problem. I do not see any “digital notching” at 0 and 180 as the O.P. says.

Also, they did release a firmware recently that increased the turbo speed to a consistent 15Hz and made things generally more consistent, like being able to apply turbo to each button individually, including the rear paddles. I’d highly recommend giving it another go.
it's great that you got a good Pro 2. myself and at least two other people have significant issues with the Pro 2. the sticks jitter and jump (a death sentence on wemmi quick kill), on certain firmwares there is a problem where every ten seconds on the dot, there's a pause in the fire stream if you're using turbo, one user has even reported dropped inputs. the build quality is uneven, to say the least. i have tested every firmware from 1.03 to 1.09 and there is no firmware that makes this controller perfect, sorry to say. i'll probably continue to use it for runs as this is the layout that makes the most sense for me, but i'm definitely trying to wean myself off it.

Found a new best: ESM-4108 https://www.easysmx.com/products/easysmx-esm-4108-wireless-controller (Switch-style analog, ~14hz).

Better sticks by far than any other non-stock Switch controller I've tried, including both of 8bitdo's offerings. Cons: no profiles, no back paddles, d-pad feels a bit mushy, (edit) button actuation is firmer than all other controllers I've tried thus far, mashing is a real pain with this one.

None of this is an issue for me (I don't use back paddles and can easily adjust to not needing a profile, which I currently use for ADM.)

I'll be using this from now on; I say that having put a ton of mileage on the Pro 2. Maybe 8bitdo will release a firmware that fixes the inaccurate sticks on the Pro 2, until then I'll be using this controller.
