i've looked into it and i don't think we'll allow it.

the listed emulator core for Game Play Color is GameBoy Online

the readme for the latter project states the following: "iOS just CAN'T run this well."

i'm personally unable to run any sort of tests to verify this, but i trust the word of the author of the emulator core here.

i'd also like to call on help from @Legs if they're around since i value their opinion on GB emulators in general.

i get the idea, but as you might be able to tell, i'm not a huge fan of fragmenting the leaderboard. the fact that the top times don't use height 5 makes that a pretty weird hypothetical category. a potential issue with a strict height 0 category is that it can be pretty easily circumvented by building up a tree like people do in nes tetris, then it's essentially a height x run with a few seconds spent on building the "floor".

thanks for the suggestion. i'm not sure if i'm perfectly on board however.

consider that the top 10ish runs range from height 3 to height 5, where do those runs that aren't 5 height end up? that includes the wr and the majority of the current top 10 runs btw.

how about the level, which is also an important factor. do you want a level 0, height 0 category and a free category? or if you want to have the level set to some value that you consider reasonable, then what about those who don't have the skill to feel comfortable with that?

as it stands now, i think the leaderboard challenges the players to use the highest settings that they can handle. if they end up with a worse time as a result, they can tune it to be a bit lower (which is already the case with the top runs).

what i can do is set up some custom variables to display which level and height a run was performed on. then you and others who are curious, filter the leaderboard to show who's best on specific conditions.

edit: i've added in the variables on the submitted runs where i could see them.

Just replying to push this a little higher after my replies in other threads. I want to note that this is not officially endorsed as a Tetris series Discord server, but I figure that to the people interested in speedrunning Tetris, it's a nice place to stop by anyway.

According to the internet, this is discontinued and no longer playable, and I'm at least a year late to address this.

I believe this was an unlicensed game, and therefore I think the Tetris Fangames series is a better fit. https://www.speedrun.com/fantetris

It's under the Tetris Fangames series as we're looking to separate officially licensed games and unofficial games. https://www.speedrun.com/fantetris

The game might be unofficial, which we don't cover in this series.

First, have a look at the Tetris Fangames series and see if your game isn't represented there: https://www.speedrun.com/fantetris

If it is an official game that you're missing, leave a comment and we'll have a look.

yes of course, i run w/ keyboard on pc but honestly, there's no good way about it. the visual queues i have (the ones i tried to describe earlier) are diffuse. i guess i can also mention that the plank on the ground helps a little with alignment; i try to jump around the right hand edge of that.. i think. if you feel like practicing it, you're going to get it eventually. the more you get it the easier it'll be. still though, my success rate might be ~25%

You're right. The only thing that held me back was the video proof thing, and after sleeping on it I realize that it is a flimsy argument in this context. Especially considering that I can keep the 40 line category as is (not requiring video proof, since I don't really have any reason not to believe people who take pictures of the 40 line mode results on their handhelds), while the 100 line categories can have that requirement. I guess I got a bit of tunnel vision!

I've added the two categories for now. I think I'll await adding any score attack category until it's officially supported by the site.
personally 40 lines is pretty short and i'd be interested in a longer category because i enjoy running this game.
This is a valid argument, and I agree that 40 lines is rather short. Had there been a way to select a higher target in the 40 lines mode in-game, I would have added it with no issues whatsoever.
i think it adds lots of value, given how unique this game is compared to other GB/GBC Tetris games. and it's also somewhat of a standard for Tetris games, as it's present in GB and NES Tetris.
The difference between 100 line category in GB and NES Tetris and the 40 line mode in Tetris DX is that the 100 line category is an (arguably) arbitrary number decided on by the speedrunning community, while Tetris DX' 40 line mode is an actual game mode. Some games alongside Tetris DX with a selectable 40 line mode include Tetris Deluxe, Tetris: New Century, Tetris Evolution, Tetris Zone, Tetris Splash, Tetris Party Deluxe, Tetris Online Japan, and Tetris Friends. The latter two being historically very important in the competitive Tetris scene as a whole also. I'd argue the 40 line mode is more of a standard if anything.
video proof should always be the golden standard for speedrunning. finding and recording a run on any of the very accurate GB/GBC emulators isn't hard and it should be encouraged if someone wants to submit a run. this board is honestly the first i've ever seen that allows runs, much less world records, to be submitted and verified with no video proof.
I think it's entirely fair to aim for video proof. However, I don't think in this case it's necessary to require people who prefer to play on original hardware to aim a camera at the screen and hold the console still for optimal recording, perhaps even causing awkwardness compared to normal use. With the existence of the in-game timer I think it's acceptable to allow players to submit pictures of their console on a completed run.

I'll quote myself from a discussion with @Oh_DeeR about this.
In this case it's not so much about strategies though. It's basically just press the buttons faster, and for that reason I think it should be up to the player to find a setup that is comfortable for optimal performance, without impacting validity. If that means shaking the handheld around to accommodate for swift movement, then that should be as valid as anything imo, and while that's a silly theoretical example, that player wouldn't be able to record their runs.

separate from 100 lines but i think that an Ultra mode category could also be of interest
I'll look into this. If I recall correctly, there's not a really neat way to keep track of high scores beyond like.. using the timer to set high scores and specifying ascending timing. Maybe I'm wrong here?

I've honestly not paid a lot of attention to these boards, I apologize for the 1.5 year delay in getting back to you guys.

40 lines has sort of been the standard competitive time attack mode for this game since at least the late 90s, which is why I've sort of ignored all of the requests so far (and opted to let ZS45 add them if he so wished).

100 lines and 100 lines from level 0 both sound like valid additions (the latter more-so than the former, imo). In a lot of ways 100 lines is just 40 lines * 2.5. I'm curious what you guys think 100 lines provides in terms of value beyond the 40 line category.

Finally a point I think is worth addressing. The current representation of GB/GBC/GBA players amount to over a third (36.11%) of all players on the 40 line leaderboard, and I think it's safe to say that a lot of them don't have a good recording setup for their handheld console. There is (to my knowledge) not a way to display in-game time in Marathon mode, thus a picture will not suffice as proof anymore. This effectively bars many of these players from submitting to a 100 line leaderboard.

IGT has generally been preferred throughout the competition of this game. I think it's reasonable that with the competition being relatively spread out, it provides good enough granularity and it's kind of a unifier between various platforms that may or may not be perfectly accurate to the original platform.

RTA is simply optional, and if I knew how (if it is at all possible?) I would remove the field entirely for this leaderboard.

Edit: I've gone through each run and removed the RTA entries, and set the setting to hide empty time columns. I'll try my best to remember and remove people's RTA entries. I've also updated the rules to state that IGT is preferred, although if someone posts an RTA time I can just look at the proof to see what the IGT was.

Source (albeit a sparse one) regarding IGT being used for Tetris DX competition (records between 1999-2002): https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1ahL3GQo9RaR-zZUrIjoPdPkOG-CIh6J_qDlKPGp0W8c/edit#gid=2052996781

I don't remember if all the platforms listed were present on SRC when the leaderboard was created, but chances are they were and we were (read: I was) too oblivious to notice. The platforms have been added (and I've tried to the best of my ability to change people's platforms to what they played on), and the variable has been changed to "Emulator".

I agree with you that the scope of allowed emulators should be limited to BGB, Gambatte, and Bizhawk. I've added a clause in the rules stating that only BGB, Gambatte, and Bizhawk are allowed. I think it's reasonable to keep the runs that have video proof but with a disallowed emulator submitted previous to today, I don't think a .4% difference would give anyone a significant advantage when in-game time is preferred, and if that were really the case, perhaps the SGB should be considered to be disallowed too. I'm not too worried personally.
