Glitchless rules are always up to debate as some things are always borderline and the question is where do we draw the line. Of course all three things you mention definitely are not intended but the community decided to allow them. I can try to give some of the reasons for them.

  • In Wind Temple, the second song stone is simply misplaced. There is no clipping really going on as there is just enough space to sidle behind it.

  • In Tower of the Gods, the waterfall has a push collision type. For some reason this push collision is disabled (or maybe reversed? I don't remember) during some parts of the water cycle. As such it's not really clipping either.

  • The Helmaroc Skip is just a bomb boost to get extra height and land on the spikes. The collision on top of the spikes is weird and tries to push you to the far side when you stand on it, so it's not caused by a wind or anything like that.

You're pointing out why I cannot answer your question. When ghost ship is involved there's no other way than to test the route. In this case it sounds to me like you would be too late to ghost ship because you're doing alot of things that normally were done when time is frozen (endless night) at a time where it's not anymore. This is also an extra warp and an extra wind change I think (not super clear).

The "easy" reroute would be to do DSE, Needle and IoS after nayru's pearl then I think ghost ship will work fine but that doesn't sound like the best cyclos route. I don't think I've seen anybody interested in running english glitchless yet so my knowledge of the route is pretty bad.

Cyclos is a 1/8 chance to save time and another 1/8 to go neutral in glitchless two hours into the run so people really don't usually go for it in a RTA setting.

EDIT: Actually you might make the ghost ship with your route idea since the triforce quest is shorter. The only way to answer that question is to test the route.

Franceazer678 months ago

On the english version you cannot do the faster wind temple route which skips the makar kidnapping, I think that loses another minute?

I'm not sure we have an english route written somewhere. Not having the triforce chain is a large timesave, and also english has many more rupees it can grab in places such as Overlook and Stonwatcher, so ghost ship early is probably not as important. The text timeloss is around 18 minutes for english though. If you play on PAL you can play on italian which is a bit better but still far behind japanese.

Franceazer678 months ago

Soup takes a very long time to get (somewhere around 1m20-1m30) and there are too many savewarps in the run that would get rid of the buff for it to be worth it in glitchless.

Cyclos is theoretically faster as trog pointed out but the odds of saving time with it are low. If someone were to push that category to its limit then probably they would do a cyclos route, but as it stands the record is still beatable without it. The ghost ship chart is very important to get early in the game as it actually saves over 5 minutes of better triforce routing later, so the cyclos reroute is not that easy either.

It's possible to skip the mirror shield and it's on the verge of being RTA viable. Using a glitch known as actor unloading, you can unload cutscenes and in particular you can skip the cutscene before the ganondorf fight, which skips the mirror shield. The problem with this is the actor unloading setup with is a huge pain with bombs only (you have to use a glitch we call hyxost invisible bombs), and is extremely inconsistent. Making a route with this is a big commitment, and the run wouldn't be easy.

With more actor unloading, a low% TAS can skip the deku leaf and the magic meter by unloading the hyrule barrier, hovering into Ganon's Tower, unloading the trial door, unloading the phantom ganon wall (particularly hard to setup), and performing puppet ganon skip with only bombs and wind waker. The latter skip has no human viable method.

Bombs help skipping other items too much to be skipped in low% (it's possible to beat the game without bombs, but you have to commit to many more items instead), and the wind waker is needed for puppet ganon skip without puppet ganon in the room in a TAS.

I am not sure what your suggestion is since both any% and 100% use glitches already. Bug Limit is what we call "any% no glitches". We don't have a bug limit 100% category because nobody has been interested in running it so far.

If what you want are No Tuner categories, the fastest Any% route does not use the Tingle Tuner so there's no need for a category split. The Tingle Tuner does save about one minute in 100%, but that's a drop in the water for a 6h+ run, there is no need for a category split there. And you can already look for No Tuner runs on the leaderboard anyway since there is a filter.

No you can't, it's impossible as far as we know. Many things are missing from that disk, including the end credits, as well as Hyrule and Tower of the Gods.

Franceazer675 years ago

Alright, whatever you want to say. Talking to Linda is still absolutely unnecessary and I'll make sure no speedrunner ever does that, in SD hundo, HD hundo or randomizer runs.

Except that with further investigation HD and SD are stricly identical. The flags are absolutely identical, there is no doubt about that. The information I was missing (and nobody knew about until a few months ago actually), is that one day need to pass between getting the deluxe pictobox and showing the picture to Anton. Talking to Linda can be skipped and that is done in 100% speedruns.

Having to become lenzo's assistant was always known and assumed since the picture has to be in colour, and you can't get the dx pictobox before becoming his assistant, only in rando is that possible.

Note that if you could cancel the knockback barrier while dead and then continue zombie hovering, you could skip the barrier. But that has been attempted tons of times accross the years with no success.

If there was a mailbox in Hyrule for exemple, then that would be possible because closing the mailbox text specifically cancels the knockback barrier, but there is no mailbox in Hyrule. If there was a spoil anywhere in Hyrule you could use the boomerang on it to grab it while you are zombie hovering, and use the spoil cutscene to cancel the knockback. But there is no accessible spoil in Hyrule before you break the barrier. A 0 heart wind waker dive to cancel the knockback doesn't work as you would still be flashing red from the barrier when you stand up. The death cutscene can cancel the knockback but unfortunately cancelling the death cutscene cancels the state you are in and the knockback cancel with it. The forest water text doesn't cancel the knockback upon poping up, and stored textboxes do not cancel the knockback when you close them either.

I think that's pretty much it in terms of zombie hover barrier skip theories.

Yeah, I still think this is a really good guide that will make anyone able to obtain the heart piece. However, this is a speedrunning forum so we should be more strict when talking about what the bare minimum is for that heart piece.

This game in particular has had an history of having very bad documentation (the IGN guide itself says that you can obtain the magic armor from the Windfall auctions which is completely wrong), so I don't want slow things to be used as a reference for future routers, glitch-hunters and speedrunners. It has happened several times that someone figured out something had actually never been necessary to progress the story. Every single time it has caused a major reroute, saving way too much time for what the novelty really was.

I know I was a bit aggressive and I must apology. Your video is still a very good piece of information, and an actual piece of correct documentation, thing that is not easy to find for this game, thank you very much for that!

Sorry for the delay. 14 DRC Small Keys is a challenge category that involves obtaining 14 small keys in DRC using a combination of 2 glitches: being able to transfer keys from one dungeon to another using storage, and using the Back in Time glitch to duplicate 3 DRC keys. There are 4+1+2+3+2=12 keys in this game. One of the earth temple keys can't be transferred so that makes 11 keys, plus the duplicated keys from Back in Time which makes 14. That is the maximum known amount of keys you can get in one dungeon.

There has ever been one run done for this category, and I think the first part of the run was lost, but here is the second half:

You can find more info on this category here: https://pastebin.com/kZCagVtR I'm not sure whether or not the exact route has been written anywhere

There hasn't been a new SD 100% speedrun submitted in a while, so a lot of things are outdated, but if you check out any top TWWHD 100% speedrun you will see that they never talk to Linda. If it didn't work for you it's probably because you didn't talk an extra time to Anton after showing him the picture.

This run is a good exemple: He takes the picture at around 41:08 (video timestamp), never talked to Linda, and leaves. He comes back to Windfall at 2:10:08 and shows the picture to Anton after talking to him, then talks to him an extra time. He enters the Cafe at 4:10:19 for the heart piece.

This works in rando since rando doesn't change those flags.

Franceazer676 years ago

For future reference, this sidequest can be sped up by quite a bit compared to this video. You only need to take the coloured picture of Linda (you don't need to talk to her), talk to Anton once to clear his first text, show him the picture, and then talk to him again after showing him the picture. They will then be in the Cafe any following day as long as you go there during day time.

You don't ever need to talk to Linda this way.

Franceazer676 years ago

If we could do that, 100% would be several minutes faster :P

It is unlikely, you would need to do a manual superswim anyway to get past the invisible wall behind the trees that is there if you don't have a sword. You also can only go there during the day or else it will crash.

Other fairies I can think of are either very much out of the way, very hard to get (Mother & Child Isles), or simply require more items (a sword for the random Headstone fairy, bombs for a bomb isle fairy). But maybe I'm missing an easy one

Franceazer676 years ago

If you want a route for this in HD:

  • Manual Superswim to the Bomb Isle Submarine, get the bottle, savewarp to Outset
  • Manual Superswim to Northern Fairy Island, get the wallet upgrade and then get a fairy in your bottle
  • Leave and perform a short manual superswim to the Northern Fairy Island Submarine, get caught
  • Leave jail, trigger the gossip stone text, savewarp to Outset
  • Save Grandma

A few interesting notes:

  • The trigger for Grandma to become ill is the gossip stone trigger in FF1, and not endless night (probably because you can go to Outset before Greatfish casually, Grandma is supposed to become ill due to being left alone storywise).
  • There might be a faster fairy to get than one in that fairy fountain. However, the short manual superswim from the island to the submarine makes me think that it is decently fast for RTA. I think you can get a fairy from some platforms with no item, but I have no idea if they're consistent.

Switching controllers in the middle of a run in order to use gyro does require going into the options. The only times switching controller is fine is during savewarps. Same with turning gyro on and off with the gamepad which requires going into the options. The gamepad is the fastest controller thanks to the gyro timesave in theory, but in reality it doesn't matter. As long as you use the gamepad to equip items on the fly you will be fine.

Franceazer676 years ago

In order to be able to hop in KoRL after visiting DRI, you must have obtained Din's Pearl, the Wind's Requiem and set the wind direction to South. You probably didn't do one of these things. And yeah, if you enter KoRL in any other way (such as by drowning or voiding-out), KoRL will get stuck by the island and you will softlock.

If you're running AD or 100%, this is not really an issue since you usually have both the Wind's Requiem and Din's Pearl at that point, and so you can hop in KoRL and it only loses around 1m30s compared to the very hard superswim.

If you're running Any%, I recommend you to follow the Beginner Route that you can find here, which avoids Greatfish completely (while actually being faster: http://zelda.speedruns.com/twwhd/routes/any-beginner

Franceazer676 years ago

Yeah, I have been wanting to find all flags and routing them for a while now.

If we are going for all flags, I think we should go for all non-respawnable rupees. The problem is finding them all, which is tricky. Any help is appreciated (I forgot to check the yellow rupee on Tingle Island btw, thank you for mentionning it).

About the ocean light rings, most of them don't respawn and they are not random, so they should be included in. Luckily, someone already mapped them so it shouldn't be too bad to route them in: https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/wii-u/701110-the-legend-of-zelda-the-wind-waker-hd/faqs/57050

About the decorations, since they can be removed from their pedestrals whenever, they shouldn't technically be included. However I 100% agree that this is a pretty cool sidequest and doing it would be really cool. But other people might not think the same so idk. In my first route attempt I routed placing Shop Guru Statues everywhere (I still haven't tested it tho).

About spoils, having 99 of all of them shouldn't be necessary (since you can sell them so it's not a permanent flag. However, obtaining one for each of them will be necessary to clear their first time cutscene. Defeating all 23 blue chus will also be necessary (but technically, only 15 of them will need to be collected for the blue potion). And giving 99 Joy Pendants to Mrs Mary will also be included since that's the max she can take.

There is one last issue about all flags, and that is all the texts that only happen once. Some NPCs have a unique line of dialogue when talking to them for the first time, and so talking to most NPCs in the game will be necessary, even if they don't do anything.

This is what I wrote when trying to route all flags: https://pastebin.com/H5sTyMyy There are probably some flags missing (I haven't tested texts at all yet), so any help is really appreciated (that category is a mess lol)
