My first run was in the PC remake of Repton 3 (not on this site); I set records for every Repton 3 scenario around 15 years ago and all of them are still standing -- most scenarios have less than 5 runs total. With the lack of competition, it was hard to motivate myself to improve my times.
So, I've finally submitted my first speedrun of an actually competitive game, Hollow Knight: https://www.speedrun.com/hollowknight/run/y2pvx76z
1:37:06 isn't a good time, but it was my first completion of the game without getting safeties like mask/nail upgrades, so I can definitely take the time down further. Top times in this game require some difficult tech that I can't do, but I'll be happy if I can get my time under 1 hour.
It might not be your cup of tea, but Repton only needs the four directions as inputs, so you could bind them to WASD for one-handed play.
I was interested to see that Lemmings was mentioned. It's not a "typical" speedrun game by a long shot, Lemmings speedrunning has had quite a lot of activity recently, both on the original games and on fanmade engines (SuperLemmini and NeoLemmix) which give the player more fine-control abilities such as fast-forward, framestepping, instant max release rate, and so forth. Regardless of engine, a lot of the levels have a variety of different ways to approach them, and we've had a lot of interesting discussion about comparing different strategies.
I have a related question. I'm a moderator for two low-profile games and have just verified another player's run for the first time :)
However... the tool shows the time taken was 8:50.533. Should that be entered as 8:50 or 8:51? (i.e. do we always round down, or always up, or take the nearest whole number?)
I see, it can be done by using a variable. Thank you! I think I've set it up correctly now.
Hi! I'm the moderator for Repton (https://www.speedrun.com/repton1), which I added to the site yesterday. I don't expect this game to get much attention, but would like to populate it with my own records so that they are there for others to challenge :)
Level 11 (Giant clam) is a concern, because this level plays out completely differently depending on whether you accept losing a life, or complete it with one life. If you accept losing a life, you can do the lower half first, which lures the monsters into a safe place so they won't disturb you during the upper half. To illustrate how much difference that makes, my current best time for the level is 2:34 one life, 2:07 losing a life.
Obviously it would be nice to separate these two runs. However, for the majority of levels in the game, "1 life" doesn't make any sense as a category because best times will be done on one life anyway. So, is it possible to have an IL category for just this one level, or should I maybe add "Giant clam (1 life)" as a separate IL?
