I agree that a more concrete theme makes it better, so I'll make it glitchless.
FF1 - No RNG Manip (Which is Glitchless I believe) FF2 - Glitchless FF3 - Gtitchless FF4 - Glitchless FF5 - Glitchless FF6 - Glitchless
I would add the following rules too:
- Credits must be watched until 'The End' before powering on the next game
- Timing starts on power on FF1 and ends on 'The End' of FF6 credits
- NES/SNES versions only
- English patches are allowed for Japanese games
Even though my run could be crushed by anyone who's a true expert at some/most of these games, I will be doing a run of this category this weekend. I suspect it will take nearly 40 hours but I'm looking forward to it.
We're going to be doing it as part of a little marathon. Another runner will be doing FF7-9 while I attempt FF1-6. For those curious, it'll be on twitch.tv/rollindeepmarathon starting Sat morning EST.
If possible please let me know any suggested changes to rules before then.
I did a run couple runs of this, thanks for routing it
Should we make an official category for this?
I am gearing up to run this for fun -
All original NES/SNES versions
FF1 - No RNG Manip FF2 - Glitchless FF3 - Gtitchless FF4 - No 64 stair glitch FF5 - Any% w English Patch FF6 - Glitchless
About 40 hours long but doable. If I finish it can we get a new category?
Funny you say that Unwary because some genius on youtube is trying to tell me that if we think there is rng to combat in this game (like alma dodging flying swallows) that just means we suck at combat. Fkn people man. Guess everybody on the leaderboard is wrong about rng in half the boss fights.
Just something I came up with on my own. There is some randomness to when the big head comes down, but if you cast your 2nd fire wheels when the karma window says ~84 seconds, that seems most likely to have you setup for a good gleaming blade UT when the big head comes down.
As mentioned in another thread, I'm now against karma window rule because it isn't open by default, meaning there's a grey area of by when you should have it opened, and can be closed by accident (it happened to me in my newest pb), and there are plenty of other ways to detect splicing. If you aren't using it to know when to cast fire wheels vs the 2nd emperor form however, you'd best get on that.
My newest run I closed the karma window by accident a couple times, so I'm hesitant about making that a rule. I definitely don't think the run should be invalidated just because of that. Watch the reactions, it's clearly real.
And I think RTA should still be the primary timing method used, because that's how basically all speedruns are timed in modern times.
I'll go frame count it real quick.
Also notice how this leaderboard has both IGT and RTA: https://www.speedrun.com/bk
Lol yea I imagine it'll be offline attempts. But the man's got worms again so shit's going down.
Yeah that's true per jtb's runs but I'd still use RTA by frame counting from the run start and end time. Gonna wait for him to submit regardless, he's going to go for pb attempts this weekend.
We can def make the karma window thing a rule, but wouldn't enforce it on any pre-existing run as it could invalidate them
Not allowing saving might be too harsh for anyone new, as a deathless run is surely a daunting task for some players. One thing we might be able to do though is have an extra field on the leaderboard for IGT, so you could clearly see both types of time on the board for people to use whichever they prefer.
Oh I wasn't under the impression this conversation was about using IGT. I still want to use RTA. It's just you can easily calculate that by going to the start and end of run timestamps in the video. I've used that to double check all my pb's regardless of what livesplit says.
Karma window is a good idea imo. But you should be given time to turn it on, and I don't think run should be disqualified if you were to turn it off for a few seconds by accident.
Yeah, I think I'm going to just change it. I believe having it on screen was a convenience thing for the people verifying the run, but as someone who verifies runs I don't mind checking myself. Let me know if anyone has a good reason not to make this change. Idk how useful the 'show the main menu' rule is either. Technically my SGDQ run violates that rule.
P.S. Cman JTB, submit the real wr lol. It's 1:51 now.
Skipping these heart pieces would trigger a strong sense of non-completion and illegitimacy in myself and most likely many others. As much as we don't like these minigames, those heart pieces are as much a fundamental part of the game as anything else required for 100%. Those who persist in playing 100% after getting screwed by dampe over and over wear that sacrifice as a badge of honor.
Yo,
There should be a 100% category for this game. Am I missing anything from this list?
49 heart pieces (yeah, there's 1 extra) 5 heart containers All stones and crystals All items in menu Max upgrade for sword, shield, bracelet, boomerang, bow, tunic, magic cost reduction
Just to clarify, since online guides don't cover it, is the max magic upgrade what you get by showing the fairy the ether medallion?
If you guys like the idea pl add it to the lb and I'll get a really shitty time in it to kick things off.
Best place to test it would be wendall woods. That level has the worst spawn rates and kills many runs to the time limit. I might give it a go tonight.
Cool dude, I hope that's true. Can you show a clip of it in action? I want to try it and make sure its statistically significant.
Cool, I could try getting used to the karma window. Marbus' stun lock exploit strat is indeed ridiculously risky, bc to encourage him to use the dive bomb I think you have to be far away from him (i.e. not in his face attacking him). So what I usually end up doing is forward Y, X, Y with DS underneath him which is extremely slow.
Sick, can't wait to see a new pb. Have you considered dropping scarabs? I think I need to see dabi lvl 3 in ch 15 to really get a feel for if its worth all the extra gathering, because when I use that sword it definitely isn't worth it (probably because I'm bad). I've already made my opinion known that I don't think a timer should be required on video at all, and I stand by that still. But perhaps the karma idea would convince others. I like to have that UI space clean personally so I can see enemies in the top left better.
