After the primary timing change to RTA-TBC in April 17th, 2024, it was requested that we have an easy to access location for a history of the Sonic 2 categories when the speedruns took place using IGT. Speedrun(.)com does not allow users to check the WR History of a category that's not the primary timing method anymore, so a google doc was created so the history is still archived in some way for better accessibility.

This will include:

  • Sonic - Beat the Game
  • Sonic - Glitchless
  • Knuckles - Beat the Game
  • Knuckles - Glitchless
  • Gambling

If new IGT WRs happen to occur for any of the following categories, we will update the doc.

After looking through the proposal and discussing this with the moderators, we've come to the decision to make the No Major Glitches(NMG) category have its own board. We feel that allowing most of the points that the proposal brings up changes too much of the current Glitchless run, which may alienate some people that may prefer to play the game that way.

From the responses on this thread, there seems to be enough people that would rather play in a NMG ruleset and not a Glitchless, so I'd say a completely fresh board is warranted. |

Here are the rules that we've agreed on for No Major Glitches:

Rule 1. No MPO (Moving Peel-out), Level wraps, Zips/Zip Jumps allowed.

Rule 2. Respect solidity (Sonic shouldn't pass through wall/floor collision where he normally shouldn't)

  • Tidal Tempest Act 1 Ceiling Skip is allowed (Respecting Yellow/White collision)
  • Metallic Madness Act 2 Vent Skip is allowed (No solidity on the space Sonic can jump through)
  • Metallic Madness Act 2 AGF Fast Time Warp is allowed***** (Completely skips the wall)

*****After the Time Warp, if the wall pushes Sonic out to the right without the aid of player input then it's allowed, but if a zip is required to exit out the wall, then it invalidates the run

Rule 3. Boss Skips are allowed if Rules 1 and 2 are met

  • Collision Chaos Act 3 Boss Skip is allowed (Running on top of a ceiling is allowed)

All the standard category/game rules will transfer over obviously (No Debug, No Level select, ect..) If folks are okay with this, then we can get started on creating the NMG leaderboard soon for runners to submit to.

On the current timing method (In-game Time), PAL(50HZ) has a clear advantage over NTSC(60HZ). It allows you to play at the fraction of normal speed with no penalty, which makes the multitude of tricks in the run objectively easier to perform.

Both being paired against each other just isn't fair, so it was decided to not allow PAL. NTSC is default due to it being the intended framerate for the game, as well as the more readily avaliable version.

This is also for future insurance as well. While Sonic 2 hasn't had a case where top times performed on PAL are common, it was best to nip it in the bud before the leaderboards could get to that point, which could complicate the integrity of the speedrun even further.

As stated in the title, the following categories have been given an additional sub-category for "No major Glitches":

Sonic & Tails Sonic Tails Knuckles Mighty Ray

All runs submitted to these categories prior to this change were defaulted under the "Glitched" sub category, so I'll be putting the actual No Major Glitches runs in their correct leaderboard in due time.

So Xandre and I have noticed the attention this category is getting so we've decided to make Hang Glider% part of category extensions at: https://www.speedrun.com/smce#Hang_Glider .

Tails isn't the only character that can reach the softlock hang glider so Knuckles and Ray have been added as well. In regards to the emeralds variable, it doesn't really change the run in any significant way, other than being much slower, so it wasn't included.

Hello. I'm currently in the process in learning this speedrun. In the current Any% WR run by Reppler, I see successful down throws on Lunar consistently, especially at the very start of the fight. Although when I attempt to mimic the same strat, Lunar always techs the throw and doesn't budge. How is this achieved?

Late but whatever; my vote goes to Patched/Unpatched. There's no need to over complicate the naming, as there just won't be a clear cut solution that answers all questions from the uninformed who don't run this game. Although I believe naming it this way is the least confusing of the options available, as there are currently only two main versions of the game right now. Yuuki's idea of clarifying the specific version for each leaderboard is a nice quality of life change to further decrease the confusion. Once the Unpatched floodgates open and are available for runners to sink their teeth into, we can see an influx of new blood to the category.
