I think the first time "speedrunning" as something I wanted to attempt myself happened the first times I played and beat God of War, realized I got it mastered fairly easily, and thought to look up if there were world records for beating a game like God of War quickly (and of course, there was lol). Still, it was just about beating that ONE game fast to have a world record in something.

Speedrunning as a CONCEPT (how we all know it now, as breaking/pushing the limits of a game, making ideal routes, sreaming/racing, etc etc) didn't become known to me until sometime around 2012 when I went to look up a playthrough of Resident Evil 2 on Youtube and found a Carcinogen video (probably a GDQ of some type). The fact there was a split sidebar, and he was discussing advanced tactics with the stream captivated the Hell out of me! Still, I was only just a casual observer for years and years until earlier this year I finally got over the intimidation factor and realized I have 19 years of experience playing Resident Evil 2, so why not friggin go for it?! And with REmake 2 right around the corner, what better swansong for my favorite game's "life" than to finally get a -1:15:00 run? :)

(Other games that got me into SR'ing: Ocarina of Time, Super Metroid, and all manner of Mario titles).

WOW @Roofress, this is so much knowledge to be had, thanks so much for taking time to relay all this to me! Essentially everything I wanted/needed to know, and then some! You're awesome!

Texas, USAConkyJoe897 years ago

Thank you @Roofress and @Darazanjoll for the helpful answers! Now knowing this info, it seems that Lickers are just random little bastards who will always make it difficult to precisely nail down my HP (playing on Console...no fancy HP trackers or Timers/Splits for me unfortunately lol).

And @Tanky59, while I don't believe this knowledge to be absolutely imperative to know in order to have a successful run, it sort of is. Knowing how close to Caution you are at a certain point in the run (due to ideally using only 2 FAS's) and whether to drop the run bc you've goofed up too much dmg-wise. Also, knowing how much HP you have is necessary to know if you can survive what I deem "instant kills", those being a Licker headchop and G4's 3x Chew attack. Neither are really an i.k., but essentially become one if you've taken basically any real dmg elsewhere. Hope that makes sense, it's late/way early here lol.

Thank you SO much for the support brother! It really means alot at this stage of the journey, bc I'll admit I'm slightly intimidated by the time I've chosen to chase. Lol

Just purchased a slim PS2 (model type SCPH-70012) as I'm gearing up for my first "serious" Leon-A run on Resident Evil 2, and from what I've gleamed this particular PS2's PS1 Driver is pretty good at improving times via its FDS (I think the current WR even utilized a Japanese 70012). I'm just excited that I'm one small step closer to my personal goal on my fave game (which is a sub 1:15:00 run). A far cry from the WR, but simply a personal goal I want to meet :)

This site has been so inspiring, I'm so thankful I decided to take this on!

This may be common knowledge for some, so if it is, excuse my ignorance lol. I know your character has 200 HP total, but at what HP do they drop to Caution, Orange Caution, and finally Danger? I would assume Caution is somewhere around 100, bc doesnt a Licker head chop do 100 dmg and instant kill you if you're anywhere below Fine? I've seen some odd situations that have lead me to question if a Licker chop does in fact do 100 dmg like the Damage Chart says (this is all pertaining to American Normal mode btw, aka Arrange Normal "AN" in the Damage Chart).

Secondly, I've read/heard that certain attacks do less dmg if their hit causes you to drop a status level (i.e. a Licker swipe doing less damage if its hit would drop you from Fine to Caution). Does anyone have a list of known examples of these situations? Or is it all attacks, and dependent on their base dmg?

Thanks in advance for any help, I'm researching the HELL outta Leon A in preparation for my first speedrun attempt. Lol

Despite it being my all-time favorite game, I had never unlocked Tofu in Resident Evil 2 until about 2 weeks ago. I nearly cried (I'll admit it lol). I had been reading incorrect info regarding the criteria to unlock him for damn near TWO DECADES. So when I finally unlocked him I was able to finally notch it off my "Gaming Bucket List".

Also of note, I knocked a second RE-related challenge off my Gaming Bucket List within the next few days, when I beat Wesker's Battle Game in Code:Veronica X (first try might I add, and had to kill Alexia with the knife bc I missed a Magnum shot!!! Lol). I've never felt more accomplished as a gamer. It was truly reinvigorating after a bad year :)

Is this referring to the infinite healing item glitch that you activate via the Game Manual/Inventory trick? Like in a Glitchless run this isn't allowed? Or what is this "glitch" in question?

I'm aware that the English version is slightly more difficult as there are more enemies in certain rooms (requiring different paths to run, etc etc). Does anyone have a list of ALL these differences? And perhaps a rough estimate of the additional time added to an optimal run of Leon A bc of said differences? Thanks in advance gang.

Hey JayJane4, I joined discord but can't find anything on RE2. How do I look up ppl talking about RE games?

Texas, USAConkyJoe897 years ago

Sorry, I know this thread is super old, but I'm new here and have my 2cents to toss in lol.

Having thought alot about this before, I think a 100% would constitute both an A and B scenario (but not both A's and B's), all weapons, all Files, and registering fingerprints to enter that one room in the Lab. Also, getting Special Key and changing clothes (at least once, and that'd need to be Claire as she gains the SAA needed for weapon completion) and developing all pics (including Rebecca's check desk 50x pic).

Those requirements have always seemed pretty all-inclusive to me, as it essentially covers everything and gives someone a full RE2 experience story-wise. :)

Texas, USAConkyJoe897 years ago

Okay cool, I'll probably go with a 70000 model then since it's cheaper and I read in the description on a Carci video he used a 77001 for an 1:11:00 run or somewhere close to that. Thank you all so much for the quick and helpful replies.

Texas, USAConkyJoe897 years ago

Unfortunately PC gaming isn't an option for me, as the only PC in my house isn't mine to use as I wish :/

So my Leon A runs will always need to be console. I know now from some research that the SCPH 77001 and 90000 are ideal PS2's due to the speed enhancer options, but are those Japanese models or American? Bc I'd like to keep my RE2 game and not have to pick up BH2 if it's not necessary.

Thanks very much JayJane4! :)

And yes I found the forums, and there's a few helpful tips to be found there. I'm still looking for info as to what system I should be using for the DualShock US version if I want optimum performance (i.e. load times, etc). This site is so awesome and the players are so skillful, I'm glad I finally got over the intimidation factor and dove in!

Thanks guys! I'm very excited to start learning tactics to improve my times (as I said, solely to improve my own times as I have no intentions of going for a WR run lol). Is there perhaps a thread or poat here yall could direct me to that has common tips for beginners running RE2? I'm learning quick shots, quick Gator glitch, Ada/Annette handgun cutscene, and quick inventory. Is there perhaps a compendium containing more info? Thanks in advance!

New to speedrunning, and really only stumbled across this site tying to drop my own personal best on Resident Evil 2 to a -1:15:00 lol. No aspirations of claiming any WR's, its just that RE2 is my all-time favorite game, and I want to manage a sub 1:20:00 at least (I'm realizing quickly I lose alot of time using item boxes...like a total novice! Lol).

Anyways, glad to be here and hope to make some new friends as passionate about RE as I am! Cheers! :)
