Hi everyone,
Watching the current leader's run on YouTube, and I see they're enabling infinite ammo, infinite crafting, and one-shotting enemies under the "cheats" menu.
Now, I'm new to speedruns, but enabling cheats on purpose seems a bit lame in my opinion. But I guess it's one of those "if you're not enabling these, you're hampering yourself"-kind of things.
I'm okay with the infinite ammo/crafting part. That makes it easier to fly through and not waste time looking for resources. Kind of the same thing as not being dependent on coins in Mario, rings in Sonic, etc. But if the one-shot cheat is allowed, why not allow trainers for no reload because why waste time reloading? Or god mode, because why waste time healing yourself?
Technically, the rules don't mention cheats, sure. But come on? Are we even playing the game then?
That's what restricted is for, unrestricted is what it says, unrestricted meaning you can use whatever accessibilites and extra modifiers like cheats that you want. The rules very clearly state the difference between the categories, you're wanting to look at the restricted category which doesn't allow the use of game modifiers.
Saying they are cheating is wrong because those "cheats" are modifiers within the game itself and when you do any% unrestricted runs you are allowed to use everything the game provides to you. So activating the one shot modifier or skipping all the puzzles is fine and is not considered cheating, since they are all options inside of the game that you can turn on or off.
Trainers or other things that give you god mode or whatever would be considered cheating, since they happen from outside the game.
If you don't like that, we also have a Any% restricted category where you are not allowed to use those things and complete the game that way.
Thanks for the replies. It was further outlined that I'm new to these speedruns and didn't understand the categories :D It all makes sense now.
