How to get Hacked File using GCMM (Wii)

You will need a way to boot homebrew on your Wii, a GameCube memory card, and an SD card (or USB drive).
Warning: this method involves replacing your existing Sunshine save files (all 3 blocks). If you want to get hacked file alongside your existing files, [you can do so using practice codes](https://www.speedrun.com/sms/guide/2alxp).

First off, you need to [download the latest GCMM release](https://github.com/suloku/gcmm/releases/download/1.4f/gcmm_1.4f.zip). Open the archive and the gcmm_1.4f folder inside it, and you should find this:

Copy the apps folder to the root of your SD card.

Download the relevant archive, open it and you will find a .gci file. Copy it into a folder called MCBACKUP, at the root of your SD card (create it if it doesn’t already exist).

Put your SD card into your Wii, open the Homebrew Channel, and load GCMM. The software can be navigated with either a Wiimote or a GameCube controller. You will first have to select the storage device you did the previous steps on: press A for an SD card, or B for a USB drive. You will then get to the main menu:

Press X (GC controller) or + (Wiimote), then select the memory card slot where you put your memory card; press A for slot A, or B for slot B. You will enter Restore mode.

Select the file you downloaded earlier using the D-pad, then press A to restore it. If you already have save data for the game, you will then have to press B, then Z (GC controller) or 2 (Wiimote) to confirm that you want to overwrite it. The copy will take a few seconds, then the message “Restore Complete” will appear at the bottom. Press A to return to the main menu, then Start (GC controller) or Home (Wiimote) to exit GCMM, and congratulations, you now have a hacked file!

How to get Hacked File using practice codes

First you need to set up practice codes if you don’t already have them, using [this guide](https://gct.zint.ch/guide.html). You will need `Enable Exit Area Everywhere` for this, and `FMV Skips` is recommended. *If you're using Gecko OS to play a Japanese disc on a non-Japanese console (or vice-versa), you will also need `Fix Memory Card Encoding`, otherwise Gecko will fail to read the save file.

You may select other codes on the site too, except `Fast Any%` and `Stage Loader` as they won't let you visit the airstrip, and `Remove Saveboxes` as it won't let you save.

**Warning**: If you already have practice codes, you might have an old version of `Infinite Lives` which will set your file to 99 lives instead of the normal 3. If the life counter shows 99 upon starting a new file, you should either disable `Infinite Lives` or download the new version. Likewise `Persistent FMV Skips`, which is no longer on the site, will allow your file to skip every cutscene instead of just the intro, so you need to turn it off.

Once you have practice codes, start a new file and go get FLUDD.

Right after the cutscene which explains how to use FLUDD, instead of starting to spray the pink Piranha Plant, pause and exit area.

The court cutscene will play, then you will spawn on the plaza. Pause and save, and you now have a hacked file!

The process is similar to how you would make a race file, but because you don’t get any Shine, loading this file will put you on the airstrip.

How to play Super Mario Sunshine PAL in progressive scan mode (480p)

[section=Introduction]
One of the version differences between the PAL and NTSC versions of Super Mario Sunshine is that the PAL version gives the option between 50Hz and 60Hz display as opposed to giving players the option to play in progressive scan (480p) or interlaced (480i) mode. A result of this is that the PAL version can normally only be played in interlaced mode. Progressive scan has 2 distinct advantages when compared to interlaced video:

1. Because the TV doesn't have to deinterlace progressive video like it has to with interlaced video, there will (most likely) be less input delay.

2. A progressive image is better quality than an interlaced one. Meaning the game will look better on your TV, as well as on recordings/streams.

While these things are not necessarily deal breakers, the difference is noticeable and therefore you may want to play in progressive scan mode. This guide will provide an explanation for how to play the PAL version of Super Mario Sunshine in progressive scan mode.

A couple of things are required to be able to use progressive scan mode on PAL:

- A PAL disc of Super Mario Sunshine
- A Nintendo Wii (You will need to homebrew your Wii for this tutorial)
- An SD card
- A TV capable of displaying progressive scan video at 60Hz AND with component input
- Component cables or a Wii2HDMI adapter for your Nintendo Wii

Allow me to reiterate: **You need component cables or a Wii2HDMI adapter to do this.** The standard composite (yellow/red/white) cables that come with the Wii can't transfer progressive video, so you will need component (red/white audio, red/green/blue video) cables (or a Wii2HDMI adapter & HDMI cable), as well as a TV that has the corresponding inputs!

[section=Preparation]
**I don't have Homebrew on my Wii**
As mentioned in the requirements, you will need to have homebrewed your Wii. If you don't have Homebrew on your Wii, you will have to homebrew it yourself. This is a simple process that will require a Nintendo Wii and an SD card. Follow the steps on [this page](https://sites.google.com/site/completesg/hacking-guide) to install Homebrew on your Wii. Now continue to the "I have Homebrew on my Wii" paragraph.
 
**I have Homebrew on my Wii**
In addition to having access to the Homebrew channel, you will also need to have a cIOS installed on your Wii. This is also easy to achieve and is a lot like installing Homebrew on your Wii. Follow the steps on [this page](https://sites.google.com/site/completesg/backup-launchers/installation) to install a cIOS on your Wii. If you already have a cIOS, you can continue with this tutorial.
 
**Installing Swiss**
Now that your Wii is set up properly, you will have to install the Swiss launcher onto it. Swiss is a Homebrew utility originally made for the Gamecube, and it is what will allow us to force the game to run in progressive scan mode. To install the Swiss launcher, download it [here](https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B1kp7dSSLjrxZjV3OWFBaEJSUFE/view?usp=drivesdk&resourcekey=0-kInEi48vUZ006ZJhf1jDsQ), and then complete stages 1,2 and 3 from [this tutorial](https://gbatemp.net/threads/how-to-set-up-and-use-swiss-on-the-wii.291505/).  
  
**¤Important¤** In step 1, instead of the link they provide there for downloading the actual Swiss app, go to [this page](http://www.gc-forever.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=25&t=1375) and download the current nightly build (The download link is located at the bottom of the forum post, where it says "Current Nightly Build" in big letters). Then in step 2 when it says to get swiss-lz.dol, get swiss_rXXX.dol (XXX is the version number) instead from the archive you downloaded.  
  
[section=Launching the game with Swiss]
You now have everything you need to play the PAL version of Super Mario Sunshine in progressive scan mode. Here I will explain how to use Swiss to achieve our goal.
 
First of all, if you haven't launched Swiss yet, do so by selecting it in the Homebrew menu and then selecting Start.

Before proceeding, make sure that your PAL disc of Super Mario Sunshine is inserted into the disc drive of your Wii. Then press A (make sure you have the DVD Disc option, which is the default, selected) and after the disc is initialized you should see the following:

Now press A again, and on the next screen press X to go to the Current Game Settings screen.

Now press right on your controller until the "Force Video Mode" option is set to 480p. You don't have to edit any other settings right now, but you may want to later.

Now navigate down and select Save & Exit to return to the previous screen. Now press A (Continue), and the game will launch in progressive scan mode!
[section=Additional Information]
Now that you've managed to launch the PAL version of Super Mario Sunshine in progressive scan, there are some things that you should know and/or consider:
 
- You have to repeat the steps from the above section every time you launch the game. Luckily, the process only takes about half a minute.
- While current game settings are not saved, regular Swiss settings are. You can press B in the main Swiss menu to access the bottom buttons. If you go into the settings, you can change things like your default game language. Very useful for PAL, as Italian is the fastest language!
- If you are recording/ streaming your gameplay, don't forget to disable deinterlacing when you're playing in progressive scan mode!
- Swiss also contains an option to display in 576p. The drawback however, is that the refresh rate will be lowered from 60Hz to 50Hz as the Wii can't display 576p in 60fps. Generally 480p is preferred.

I suggest you take a look at the last image specifically. This one most clearly shows the difference between interlaced and progressive capture during gameplay, as usually movement will be occurring on screen.

There will be 10 tasks in this season, and there will be one week to complete each task. Every Sunday morning, a new task will be released, and the submission deadline will be Saturday night at 11:59PM, Eastern Standard Time (New York time). No communication between competitors about the task is allowed until after the results are released. Submissions must be uploaded to YouTube as unlisted, and sent to Paperario#2585 on Discord. Overall points for the season will be awarded based on placement in each task.  
Final official timing will be done using the fade-in timing method. Practice codes are not required, but we ask that you use the **new fade-in timer code** to make it easier to create the rankings. http://gct.zint.ch

    - Stand on a blue, black, or green spotted block: 1pt  
    - Stand on a red spotted block: 2pt  
    - Wallkick off the side of a spotted block: 2pt  
    - Wallkick off the inside of a colored arch: 2pt  
    - Stand on top of a colored arch: 3pt  
**Clarifications:**  
    - Cannot stand on top of two arches in a row.  
    - Points will only be awarded for one wallkick under each arch.  
    - Points will only be awarded for wallkicking and standing on each block once.

Sunshine Version Differences

**NTSC-J**
**Fastest**
Getting off Yoshi allows clips, because you jump off Yoshi backwards, while in other versions it's more of a vertical dismount.
Minimal amount of air damage frames.
Subtitles always on.
Japanese is the only available language.
No Piantissimo music.
Delfino music takes a bit to start.
Rockets in Pinna 1/8 collide with eachother, either when on the track or in the air.
If you throw a fruit as you land, you can make the fruit float in mid-air.
There are no fruits strewn about Delfino Plaza.
Sirena 6 is much less lenient on how much goop you need to clean from the beach.
Fruit Storage with Yoshi can not be done.
Faster loading.
Opening cutscenes are voiced differently.
When Shadow Mario shines spawn, as they fall they don't spin.

**PAL**
**Faster**
Language options are available (Italian being the fastest).
The ferris wheel in pinna 5 moves slower.
The windmill in Bianco moves slower.
Slightly faster loading than NTSC-U.

**NTSC-J A**
**Fast**
All glitches are the same as NTSC-U and PAL.
There are no fruits strewn about Delfino Plaza.
Japanese is the only available language.
Subtitles are always on.

**NTSC-U**
**Slow**
English is the only available language.

**NTSC-K**
**Slow**
The exact same as NTSC-U, except it can be played on J region consoles without homebrew.
It uses memory card data from NTSC-U as well.

**Physical Difference Between NTSC-J and NTSC-J A**
Although, the NTSC-J A version is much more difficult to find than the original version, if you have concerns over whether
or not a version is A or not based on anything outside of game play, you can tell by the inside ring of the discs.
