Potential CE idea: Crash

Title says it all, the concept is to crash SMB1 in one of two possible ways:

  1. Using the cart version, go to 1-2 with a specific score and coin count, grab the mushroom and perform precise koopa bops to trigger a crash (1 in 8 chance due to coin flash)

Example:

  1. Using the disk version, go to -1, die at the midway point, and then continue to the end of the level.

Example:

  1. Using the disk version, grab fire and enter -1, kill bowser and continue to the end of the level.

Curious to see what others think of this CE idea. Personally, I like the idea of a Crash category for SMB1 since it contrasts the Crash category for SMB2J quite nicely; while the SMB1 crash takes much less time than 2J crash, you can perform it in more ways and the fastest method of crashing SMB1 requires more precise execution than any of the 2J crash setups. In addition, there have been quite a few runners practicing and attempting the SMB1 crash so there is a fair degree of interest in the category. If it's worth anything, I've done Crash speedruns using the -1 crash method (shown in the post above) and the 1-2 method:

Regarding no more categories: I think that should not apply to categories that were considered impossible/improbable at the time that decision that made. Blindfolded Warpless, Walkathon Warpless and this should all be accepted once done RTA.

Isn't it a 1/12 chance for things to happen on the same frame as the coin is changing color?

Interestingly, it's actually a 1/8 chance. Even though the bright coin lasts for 24 frames, coin palette updates are triggered every eight frames; there's three separate entries for bright coin in the coin palette data, which is why that color appears for 24 frames.

hey i was just wondering, HappyLee made a demo of 2-2 and 7-2 vine corruption via 5-2 in 2 player. Loading 7-2 with a vine from the checkpoint has glitched pipe exit info causing a crash. 2 player crash category?

11x Categories - New Timing Method

Hey Folks!

Just wanted to announce a new change to timing methods for both 11x categories. The new timing standards are as follows:

  • Timing starts from power-on/reset (or game select if you're using one of the combo cartridges).
