(A Beginner's Guide: EMU/PC Versions)

Always remember to check the rules when viewing each category and platform before submitting runs.

Gathering the files you need:

Playstation Emulator -

The first thing you will need is the right emulator to play on. Download it here:
https://code.google.com/archive/p/psxjin/downloads The version must be PSXJIN v. 2.0.2. No other versions are allowed.
Bizhawk emulator is also allowed.

The next thing you will need is the ISO of the game. We can not supply this for obvious reasons. Make sure you get the Director's Cut version, not the Dual Shock version. Google is your friend.

Make sure you enable the "Input Display" in the emulator. This is a rule because it shows the buttons the player is pressing on screen. This is used as an anti-cheat method and to determine you are using the correct emulator. To enable this setting in your emulator, click on EMULATOR / DISPLAY INPUT. or comma key (,) is also a keyboard shortcut to turn it on and off. Hand-cams and input display through programs like xPadder do not count. 

PC Version -

You will first need a copy of the PC version. We can not supply this for obvious reasons. We recommend joining our community Discord server and asking for help on getting yourself a copy of the game, and about anything related to Resident Evil speedrunning while you're in there :)

The next file you will need is the REbirth patch for the game. This forces the game to run at intended gameplay speed on modern operating systems and PCs. Download it here:

Livesplit is a timer that is necessary for timing runs on the PC version. This timer supports IGT (In-Game Timer) scripts that synchronizes the current time in-game, to the time displayed on your Livesplit timer. This IGT script is required. There are also autosplitters if you are interested in using them (automatically splits for you)

----- Barry Glitch (Jill) 

Goal : Freeze Barry in the dining room to skip the blood cutscene

Setup : You must open inventory/config menu during very specific frame to glitch Barry animation

Goal : Skip the chemical mandatory item by dupe plant tentacles

Setup : Hold Aim - Do one turn on yourself - Stop aim - Walk ahead 

Note : Can be optimised on PS version by cancel autoaim with L1

----- Serum Skip (Jill) 

Goal : Skip the serum item by glitching the Richard cutscene

Setup : Open inventory/config menu at the exact same position than cutscene trigger (Camera change landmark) 
and then open the menu during the cutscene ( can softlock if you don't have the right timing) to be able to move.
Go out the room and come back. Richard should be dead.

Note : Serum Skip is also a timer glitch, Richard timer (421secs) don't start when the cutscene is glitched and the total from the beginning is count for Richard's death. This very specific timer don't count doors, itembox etc. So sometimes, if you re really too fast, Richard isn't dead.

----- Plant42 Glitch (Jill) 

Goal : Skip the Plant42 Barry Cutscene   

Setup : You have to glitch the cutscene to go out of the room during Plant42 death. For that you can use door text buffering or go out of the room at the exact moment that your last grenade hit the Plant42. If you use the text buffer, open inventory/config menu to be able to move. Then you have to come back, open inventory/config menu to move and kill Plant42 for a second time with fire grenade. The take the key. If you lose Jill's controll just open inventory/config menu again.

----- Yawn 2 Cutscene Skip 

Goal : Skip the Yawn 2 entrance cutscene

Setup : You must be as close to the snake as possible to hit it with the Grenade Launcher. As It is impossible to reach it by aiming at it from afar, you must do a position setup to be less pushed by the wall and therefore gain a few pixels.

----- Rope Skip (Jill) 

Goal : Have rope cutscene trigger without wait Barry come back

Setup : You have to take the ladder at the moment when the cutscene should begin. Doing 8 turns on yourself can help to time it.   

Note : SephJul timed it twice for bad ending and seems faster by 12/13 secs on psxjin. Must be rechecked.

Setup : To do the OOB, you must aim, do a turn on yourself, use the stepladder, and press action again to go through the wall.

Chris 100% time save (saving rebecca skip)

You do not need to save rebecca from the hunter by the serum room!!

All that is required to save rebecca is to enter the serum corridor from the first floor and leave, this saves time on killing the hunter and the cut scene which follows, however you need to bank somewhere which means banking under the stairs where the chemical was. There is also a First Aid Spray here if needed. It is definitely faster than fighting the hunter and watching the cut scene but not sure by how much since I am relatively new and can't time it with optimal movement.

Chris new statue zombie strat

I found this earlier today. It seems to be a more reliable way to deal with the statue zombie. After you pause cancel, it looks like the zombie is still able to track you for another frame or two, so you may have some control over the angle at which the zombie falls down.

¤disclaimer¤ There's always a chance the zombie won't go down in 2 hits. Just have to hope he does for this strat to work. If he takes 3 hits to knock down, he should be well out of the way at that point anyway.

Damage Chart

Hey :)

We put together a small chart that shows every damage dealt by the enemies (and healing values) in the JPN PC version. 

Take note: Damage adds up when hit multiple times. For example: A zombie can bite you 1-7 times so it deals 10-70 damage in normal game.

For the required settings in the emulator, we need to set things in a few tabs. These settings are designed to place everyone on the same level in terms of performance and remove any "pay to win" from the competition. Begin by opening the settings menu.

#Console Settings
Under Console Settings, "CPU Clock Speed Control" must be unchecked and "Read Speedup" must be set to "None (Double Speed)".

Under Emulation Settings, "Emulation Speed" must be set to "100% [60 FPS (NTSC) / 50 FPS (PAL)]" and "Runahead" must be disabled.

#Hotkey Settings
There's no requirements here, but I generally recommend disabling all hotkeys (at least that could cause issues like turbo or fast forward). Savestates are useful for practice, but of course not allowed in runs.

#Controller Settings
This is where you bind the buttons on your controller or keyboard. Pretty self explanatory :)

#Display Settings
This tab contains some of the most important settings for submitting runs as it's how we can tell if the other settings are set properly. In the "On-Screen Display" box at the bottom, the following 5 options must be checked: "Show OSD Messages", "Show Emulation Speed", "Show Game Frame Rate", "Show Display FPS", and "Show Controller Input"

Zombies + Acid Grenades - Survival Percentage

Hello everyone,

In RE1 speedrun history, some runners had the surprise to NOT kill a zombie with an acid grenade.
Some cried it was a glitch, some though it was hitbox arms issue .... One sure thing : It's very rare.

So, what's the deal with this ? To explain this we must understand how a zombie HP is calculated.




------- Zombies HP -------

Each time you will go into a room, an amount will be randomly generated to represent a zombie HP.
If you go outside and comeback into the room, a new amount is picked.

So yes, zombies have random HP and change in every runs you do a speedrun.
Randomly generated ok but what's the possible range ?

After 1 hours of tests near the gang bang room + cheat engine, here is amounts that i noticed : 

Min HP : 18
Max HP : 99

So yes the gap is HUGE but an acid grenade is a lethal hit right ? ..... not really




------- Weapon Damage -------
	
With cheat engine you can easily change/freeze values in memory. So after acid tests on zombies :

Zombies with 94HP or less will die after 1hit
Zombies with 95HP or more will survive after 1hit
Zombies survive with 0HP, do 1 more hit to kill it.

So NO it not a glitch ! Plus we learned that an acid grenade do 95HP damages.
But finally, how rare is it ?



------- Survival Percentage -------

So stuff we know : 
MinHP is 18
MaxHP is 99
Zombie with 95HP or more survive.

So each time you go into a room you have ((99 - 18) +1) = 82 possible amounts
Zombies with 95/96/97/98/99 HP survive 

So you have 5/82 chances to be trolled.
Final percentage : (5/82) * 100 =  6,097560975609756

SO YES 6% IS EXTREMELY RARE cause we kill only 1 or 2 zombies with acid grenades in a speedrun !
