There's definitely still a lot of room to improve in this category. I'm sure if anyone finds a consistent way to turtle early on the maps that currently don't have consistent ways of doing so, the record would be a lot lower. I think the "Failed to save game data" thing was due to me loading save states after failed attempts so I could keep a save file available with Backwards Bob unlocked without any World Series progress (you can't reset the World Series after completing a stage on a profile).
