100% - A Detailed Tutorial

100% is a category that requires the runner to complete the Tome of Knowledge (TOK).

This means that upon completion of the run, these four categories listed at the bottom of the TOK should read "All":
	- Characters Seen
	- Treasures Found
	- Gem Tiles Created
	- Secrets Discovered

To cleanly transition between each phase of the category, complete Adventure Mode as per usual, menu skip after defeating Codex as you would any other boss, complete Arena Mode as per usual (without menu skipping; the run requires that you visit the summary screen of your Arena run), and finish by tying up loose ends with the TOK. (Minigames have been cut from the 100% rulebook and are not required to complete the run.)

The least accessible information in the run is how to complete the "Secrets Discovered" portion of the Tome of Knowledge. It's actually fairly simple, and requires the runner to complete 9 steps.

During the adventure/arena (which one being a matter of personal preference) portion of your run, you should:
	- Click on Lex; he will giggle
	- Click repeatedly on Lex until he sneezes
	- Continue clicking repeatedly on Lex until he burps
	- Actively be searching for the word "ASTROPOP" to subsequently play against an enemy
	> If you notice 7 of the 8 letters in a single rack, feel free to play as many of the other letters in that rack as you can, in the hopes that the final letter will appear so you can play the word

After completing the Arena portion of your run, you should wait until the summary screen pops up, and then:
	- Click on a foe on the right side of your screen; they will flinch
	- Click repeatedly on the same foe until they perform their death animation

If for any reason you have not spelt "ASTROPOP," enter back into Arena and selectively reroll for letters until you are capable of spelling the word. If "ASTROPOP" has been spelt, exit out of the summary screen and click on the Tome of Knowledge. If you have completed the prior steps, the "Secrets Discovered" progress tab should read 66%. You have three steps remaining:
	- Click on an enemy attack in the bottom-right corner of your screen; the enemy will perform that attack
	- Click on a foe on the right side of your screen; they will flinch
	- Click repeatedly on the same foe until they perform their death animation

Upon completing the last of those 9 steps, end the timer. Every progress tab should read 100%, in which case you have successfully completed a run. Congratulations!

Keyboard Shortcuts Guide

This guide is just available for refreshment for returning runners and maybe even be used for other new runners in this game.

1. The game features some keyboard shortcuts. Press "1" for a Health Potion, "2" for a Power-Up Potion, and "3" for a Purify Potion. Press "4" or "Enter" to submit a word that you've spelled. These are useful when in the Arena.

2. There are a few mouse shortcuts as well. Left-clicking a letter will remove it from the word, as well as any letters after it if you click a letter in the middle of the word. Right-clicking anywhere will remove the entire word back into your tile grid. These work in all modes.

3. There is no hotkey for Escape.

Optimal Treasures

Here's what I believe to be the best treasures to use. At first it may be difficult getting used to an offensive set, but it's definitely worth it. I encourage everyone who's looking to get faster to follow this guide.

Adventure Mode treasures:
1-5: Bow, Shield, Sandals
1-6: Bow, Shield, Sandals
1-7: Bow, Shield, Boots
1-8: Arch, Hammer, Boots
1-9: Arch, Hand, Boots
1-10: Arch, Aegis, Hand
2-1: Arch, Hand, Boots
2-2: Arch, Hand, Boots
2-3: Arch, Hand, Bust
2-4: Arch, Aegis, Key
2-5: Arch, Hand, Boots
2-6: Arch, Hand, Parrot
2-7: Arch, Hand, Parrot
2-8: Arch, Hand, Parrot
2-9 until the end: Arch, Hand/Lamp, Parrot

In short, the reason why you don't want to use defensive treasures is because enemy damage is actually lot less worrisome than you may have thought. In Bookworm, gems are infinitely useful, and it just so happens that word length isn't the only factor in your gem output—the value of the tiles affect it as well. The Arch is incredibly useful because X, Y, and Z tiles are now worth three bronze tiles. The biggest upgrade, however, is the Y tile. As an example, normally the word PARRY will only be worth about 6 letters giving you an amethyst, but using the Arch and the Parrot will yield a value of 9 letters and an ever-so-useful sapphire. Higher value letters = more gems = faster times. The Hand of Hercules serves as an additional damage booster, useful especially in book 3 when most enemies have damage-resistant armour.

As for a few oddities in the treasure list which may need some clarifying:
- It's advisable to use the shield in 1-5, 1-6, and 1-7 because of how crazy enemy damage is without it. 1-7 is the only stage out of three where you *could* test out the hammer instead of the shield, but be prepared to blow out your health potions, especially if your average word length is high (due to damage scaling). On that chapter, though, the hydras can all be one-shotted relatively easily, so I personally don't see a worthwhile trade-off. 
- 1-10, or Delphi, doesn't require the Boots because none of the enemies have a stun attack.
- On 2-3, you're probably better off taking the risk with the Bust because three enemies have petrify attacks, as opposed to only one with a stun attack. Trust me, you'll be needing that 50/50 chance assuming you're relatively low on purify potions.
- For Sphinx, the shield is there so that you can afford to suffer two attacks without needing to heal, should you get bad RNG (a tutorial on how to combat poor Sphinx RNG is in the guides section btw). Additionally, the Arch + Key combination helps because you'll acquire a gem from spelling all five words, which normally wouldn't occur. It may only be an amethyst, but you'll want to be as prepared as possible for the start of the next chapter.
- Lastly, you want to alternate between the hand and the genie lamp once you receive it depending on how comfortable you are with your power-up potion count. The lamp improves the power-up effect by quite a lot, which is very beneficial if you want to get those sweet one-hit KOs. A good rule of thumb is to use it when you have five or more potions, but you should go all-out near the end of the game regardless of how many you have.

Seeing larger, obscurer words

Seeing larger, obscure words in Bookworm doesn’t require a massive vocabulary, it requires dedication and practice.

Once you’ve played the game for long enough, you can tell how much damage a word is going to do based on the size and letters of the word. If you’re starting out, just know that X, Y, Z and Qu are the best tiles for inflicting the most amount of damage. Don’t think about the values too much, just understand that all the tiles have different amounts of damage; the less-used the letter is, the more it’ll do.



You can use your numpad to enter words and use potions. ENTER, respectively, enters the word and 1, 2, and 3 are for potion usage. 4 on the numpad also enters words. All the other non-numpad keys work (1, 2, 3, 4 and the non-numpad enter key). Sorry to break it to you, but you cannot type words in.

2. Word identification and lengthening
To excel in BWA (Bookworm Adventures), having a knowledgeable understanding of the English language makes life a whole lot easier (same thing with the other versions of BWA). You have to know the pluralization techniques, identify affixes, understand how words are pronounced, etymology (origin and history of words and the parts that make up the words) and identifying patterns. 

Start out with one run through the game, casually. Recognize words that are spelled regularly. Take that word and try to extend it with other affixes. If the word BUSH is being spelled every time, B, S, H, are showing up, try mixing it up, try adding more to the word. If the U in BUSH was changed to an A, you would have BASH. Simple as that. Once you have one word-- one word with a set of individualized letters (B, S, H), extend it a little more. BUSH can be turned into BRUSH with one R, BUSH can be turned into BLUSH with one L, BUSH can be turned into BUSHY with a Y. BRUSH can be turned into BRUSHING with an -ING, BLUSH can be turned into BLUSHERS with -ERS and BUSHY can be turned into BUSHILY with an I and an L. This can be represented with a simple mini-flowchart.

BUSH -> BUSHY -> BUSHILY 
BUSH -> BLUSH -> BLUSHERS
BUSH -> BRUSH -> BRUSHING -> AIRBRUSHING 

Once this is understood, try using different affixes instead of -ING, -ED or -ER like

OUT- (OUTLEARN, OUTHEAR, OUTVAUNT, OUTGOING, OUTPLAY)
UN- (UNWASHED, UNWARPED, UNLIKED, UNWOODED)
-WAY- (ROUTEWAY, AIRWAY, TRAMWAY, TIDEWAY, SIDEWAY, AWAYNESS, WAYLAY)

Most words in the English language are made up of easy-to-understand interconnectable affixes, but sometimes, they won’t be so simple.

3. Correctly using an anagrammer

Anagrammers are really only useful if you are going to dedicate the time in seeing the best or specific word. First, enter the rack in the anagrammer, identify the best or specific word, then study the living hell out of that word. I suggest getting a note card, Post-it note or any, tangible method of plastering that word in your head. If the best word is SILOXANE (a chemical compound used in the cosmetic industry for deodorants, reduction in greasiness, silky-shiny look etc.), take the time to learn and understand it, so maybe that one day, a word that you know inside and out, will just pop up on the Bookworm rack because of how much time your brain is focusing on that one word. The method of looking at the anagrammer, identifying the word and repeatedly saying a word in your head will not work. Your brain will immediately get distracted by the new racks generated. You gotta’ know the word, be the word, love the word, understand the word-- which pretty much means: know the definition, part of speech and its pluralizability.

If a word is too confusing to understand or care for, try anagramming it. For example, the word ROUTEWAY is an anagram of OUTWEARY. NEURALLY is an anagram of UNREALLY. OUTDRAWS is an anagram of OUTWARDS. Even if a word isn’t a full anagram of another word, take little bits and pieces of the word and form different words. The word SILOXANE includes all of the letters needed to spell the word ALEXINS (plasma without its clotting-factors). 

Take away families from anagrammers. A family is a group of words with the same or similar affixes: the WAY family, the OUT family, -ORY can even be considered as a family. While looking for powerful W words, I discovered the WAY family, which consists of over 130 words including the affix WAY. AISLEWAY, AIRWAY, ROUTEWAY, GREENWAY etc. The OUT family is one of the most abundant consisting of over 1,800 words with OUT.
