I think it's about time (no pun intended) the timing rules were updated. I would have liked to have a moderator or two for this decision, but for now I can just try to get some sort of consensus on what the new timing method should be.
I think obviously the new method should be a visual not an audio cue, but because of the lag after killing the final boss along with the ambiguity of the explosion scene it seems rather hard to find a proper/consistent time to make the last split.
I think the most logical solution would be to have the time end as soon as the killing blow was dealt to the boss, but I know it can also be hard to know exactly when the boss will die while you're spamming the button to kill him as fast as possible. Seems to me like this would result in almost every run needing to be re-timed, but it hasn't been tested yet so who knows?
For now, I'm going to change the rules to say the timing ends after the killing blow. If anyone has any issues with this or any suggestions of their own, please either post in here, dm me on discord or better yet ask to become a moderator for this game so I'm not the only one doing this (I don't even run this game) (I have very little experience running this game compared to all you guys).
Thanks for taking the time to read this.
There appears to be an excellent visual cue: when the weapon selection and HP indicators disappear. This happens at or shortly after lethal damage is dealt to the final boss. I checked most of the runs on the board, and this occurs 9 or 10 seconds before the current "last explosion sound" audio cue.
re: the need to retime - many games require this sort of retiming if you wish to be accurate. I've just gotten used to verifying runs (both my own and others) to make sure the posted time is accurate to the standard of the board in question. Since this board is measured in whole seconds, this is less onerous that it could otherwise be.
Just my 2c. I'm curious what other runners think.
Last blow makes sense. Originally I thought loss of control, but, that's not easy or accurate to time. I don't mind pitching in and re-timing the current leader-board. Thanks 9volt for starting the thread. Hopefully we can recruit some new runners after this week :)
Yeah, I'm all for using a visual or control cue instead of the audio. The UI elements disappearing seem fine to me, should be easier to time.
Since there are no objections, I'll start retiming the runs tomorrow. I'll also update the rules.
Thank you so much nate! I re-watched the runs as well and can confirm. Love the new timing. May have to try to PB :)
This will be a lot easier for the hopefully large influx of runners we'll get for RGL's ONOT series planned.
