I had managed to do the short method for many of the bosses in a single run as well as I did a trick a learned from watching a speed run, in the ship fight by not destoying the last 2 targets and passing over them you can get to the next 2 you would usually need to go around backwards for and take the shorter trip back to the 2 you missed.
