IrelandJust yesterday I updated a paste bin as part of a FAQ for new Super Mario World speedrunners that relates to SNES Classic and the new Nintendo Switch Online. It might have some useful info.
I can say that the Switch plays a lot like the SNES Classic which is what I did my speedruns on for a long time for both SMW and LTTP. The input lag is the main consideration - it is obviously slightly worse than what you will get on a console setup but as good as or slightly better than most emulator setups. I have done solo speedruns and also co-op speedruns online on Switch and it was fine.
In terms of LTTP, I haven't played the Switch version yet so I can't say for sure. There was talk of people organising a Switch LTTP race but I'm not sure that actually happened.
I personally find input lag to be more tolerable on LTTP than SMW so after some adjustment I'm sure it would be fine. But missing out on the JP glitches might be annoying and the jailbreak solutions for the Switch seem more difficult and riskier than the established Hackchi tool to put custom ROMs on the SNES Classic.

I've just realised we don't have 'Switch' available as platform on the ext leaderboard, only the main leaderboards. So once that gets added, you can always filter by 'Switch' platform.
What controller are you using? In the past when I tried using, for example, an Xbox controller (which has 8 directional inputs instead of 4), I could not diagonal properly at all. This is probably because the SNES expects 'right' and 'down' to be independently pressed but 8-directional d-pads sometimes do not accommodate this because they rely on their separate single diagonal input. If this is the case, I suggest getting a controller with a basic d-pad (such as iBuffalo or 8-BitDo.) You will find you have much better control in SMW and other snes games.
People do practice individual levels on the practice cart, which also records your time for that level down to the frame. While there isn't a leaderboard or anything, you can definitely try and compete against the 'gold' or 'pink' times or the times of the strategy demonstrations shown on the wiki or your friends' times.

ZSNES is allowed for most categories. I think it's just credits warp (0-exit) that it is not allowed for, but it might be disallowed for Orb and Cloud as well. Maybe someone can chime in. ZSNES is not great overall though. Use snes9x or bizhawk if your computer can handle those.
I've heard good things about using Retro Arch with a bsnes core and if you adjust the settings correctly, you can get close to console input delay. Certainly much better than 1/3 of a second. Yeah external controllers and monitors can add input lag but keyboard on laptop screen should really be doing better than that.
If you are grabbing the fence, you must be accidentally pressing 'up' or 'down'. Maybe you need to be more careful to only press 'left' and not accidentally diagonal, or maybe your d-pad is getting more sensitive.
