Let me just start by saying---I'm not 100% convinced the Mavs are the best team. I think it's likely we're missing some diamond in the ruff. However, if we stick with the Mavs, who are clearly a good team, I think it's high time we kick Michael Finley off the squad in favor of Nick Van Exel. Here are my reasons:
- Nick is, by far, a better shooter. Shots is the most important stat in the game for draining 2 pointers and always having a fastbreak opportunity. With Michael on the team, you're pretty much relying on just Dirk and Steve to do the scoring, which in some matchups may be difficult.
- The difference between Michael and Nick for rebounding/blocking are negligible, as this game is not a sim, it's an arcade game. Because of this, if you play smart you can still grab plenty of rebounds and block plenty of shots with both characters. Nick also is much faster, allowing for faster fast breaks.
In my time playing, Finley is certainly a better shooter than Van Exel, and the 2nd best shooter on the team after Nash. Finley can manipulate a green long range shot by jumping from the 3 point line, where as Van Exel cannot, and it simply seems like Finley is a more reliable shot than Van Exel and Nowitzki. Even in all my runs, it's constantly Nowitzki who continues to miss far more shots than the rest of the team, with Nash being most consistent, and Finley being a solid back up option if I can't shoot with Nash.
Plus, even though Finley and Van Exel have the same Block rating, Finley's height allows for more consistent blocks than Van Exel. Even if you're a player who goes for steals more, they both have the same Steal rating as well.
Comparing their shot percentage and eye testing who's a better shooter may be anecdotal, but being able to manipulate a green shot from long range with Finley and not being able to with Van Exel might just be enough to show Finley is a better shot.
