Hi SM64 community,
I recently watched the new records in 70 and 120 (congratulations to suigi btw) I began wondering, since carpetless is now consistently possible RTA when it was previously thought to be TAS only, have there been any leads towards pulling off a 1 Key playthrough in RTA? I'm aware that there's a 0 star category but not many people run it because of how unforgiving it is.
Also, when watching these runs, I noticed that suigi used the Japanese version in 120 stars, and in the 70 stars run he used the American version. What are the benefits of each version and how do they yield better times in the respective categories?
Hi FSA community,
I've been exploring potential timesaves for glitchless with a maneuver I'm sure someone else has used at some point before. This movement doesn't seem intended by the developers, nor does it feel much like a glitch either. It goes like this:
I separate and move a Link to a platform corner, then press X four times to precisely position Link in a square and reunite with Y. All four stand in one spot, and I press X again. Then I move Link diagonally away from the corner and he pushes the other three so they are standing in the exact middle point where edges meet pits.
With this, I've been able to do two major level skips:
- Key block skip in 5-3 by hitting a normally out of reach peg
- Roc's feather skip in 8-1 using C-right reunion
The roc's feather skip is actually still possible without this movement but it's much easier with it. Please let me know before I start doing full game runs with these shortcuts.
So I'm considering doing a glitchless speedrun of Wind Waker in segments, and after watching the current run, I was curious to ask something. I know it's possible to run into Cyclos in the quadrant that North Triangle Island occupies during the endless storm and get warped instantly to Outset. Has anyone ever tested to see if warping to Outset early would save time in the glitchless route? However, I do know you have a slim chance of the game choosing Outset for you to get shipwrecked next to and that would also mean you'd have to acquire the two Triforce charts and the Ghost Ship chart later in the game.
Another thing I'm curious about is, the game expects you to visit Grandma on Outset before talking to Jabun but the run goes to Beedle to speed up that segment. Could you in theory save time by acquiring Elixir soup and maintaining double attack power? I'd think the Moblin/Darknut battle in Hyrule Castle and the Savage Labyrinth would go much faster with this in effect, and in tandem with other enemy battles more than compensate for the time lost in Grandma's house compared to in and out of Beedle's shop.
There's more variables that affect a WW run than I can keep track of so I'd greatly appreciate any insight from the community!
Hi Minish Cap discord,
I'm not a current MC speedrunner, but I was back in the late 2000s before the ocarina glitch was discovered, and I've been following runs since. As I'm sure you're aware, the new TAS just came out this week. In his submission text Tompa mentioned an ongoing search for a way to skip cloning Link to push the block in Palace of Winds, and that finishing the dungeon early could potentially lead to skips using Roc's Feather. How much aside from a trip to Elemental Sanctuary would be skippable if that was the case?
I'd greatly appreciate any insight from the community!
Dear Sonic 1 speedrunning community,
So I just watched flower's current glitchless record video, and I wondered about the wall in Marble 1 that in any% you'd just zip through to complete the act more quickly.
Playing around with debug mode many years ago I noticed the ground right before the hill and four platforms on lava is the same height as the top of the wall. Has anyone ever looked into using the buzz bombers to bounce over the platforms, then bounce off of the shield monitor to get on top of the wall? It'd probably require some heap manipulation or even TAS to get correct badnik position and sufficient speed but in theory it could be a massive time save in glitchless!
I'd greatly appreciate any insight from the community. Cheers!
Hi MM Discord,
Though I'm not a MM speedrunner myself, I've been following speedruns of Majora's Mask for over 10 years, back when the fastest run was still over 1-1/2 hours long.
As I'm sure the community is aware, a way to obtain Keaton's Mask in first cycle without SRM or ACE was recently discovered and posted to YouTube by Exodus. I was just curious to see if that's going to impact any categories that ban SRM/ACE, or if it will lead to a faster route in Any% Unrestricted. It would make sense since my understanding is that all you'd have to do is advance the time to day 3, get the mask, and on JPN turn human in Honey and Darling, then perform moon/credits warp.
I would also like to know if the following in first cycle has been tested:
-
Can the ocarina still be obtained as human, or does Skull Kid only get stunned by Deku bubbles? If yes, how would recalling Song of Time and progressing to 2nd cycle work?
-
Can you learn oath to order if you complete a temple, or does the game crash since you'd have no ocarina?
-
Anything else relevant to MM speedrunning that has been tested in first cycle.
I would greatly appreciate any insight from the community on this topic! It's such a great, long awaited find!
A while back I did a speedrun of FSA avoiding the use of glitches present in standard any%, such as pitwalking, floating link, superjump, wall clips, etc. I really enjoyed making it and see potential for this to become a full game category. Has there ever been any community interest or discussion regarding such a ruleset?
I'd be curious about a few techniques I didn't use in my run but have seen in speedruns of FSA and whether these would be considered glitches vs. exploits:
-
Interrupting the links going back to formation to get one of them access to a normally unreachable place, such as the ice platform in 7-2
-
Hugging walls then falling into pits to get thrown across rooms instead of where you fell from, like in the room in 5-3 with the pegs and turtles where you have to pull the four levers, it's possible to skip having to wait for the platform
-
In Glyphdx's YouTube video of 2-2, in the room where you acquire the book to summon the house, he specifically positioned the four links, separated green link, walked toward the fortune teller, then regrouped the links, causing purple link to fly over the pit you normally need Roc's feather to get across, skipping most of the level.
I'm considering making an improvement video sometime in the future but I want to get confirmation on these tricks first. I would greatly appreciate any insight from the community!
So I have a YouTube channel (same as my username) showcasing ring attacks in individual levels for Sonic 2, some runs of which appear in the IL leaderboards. I didn't submit any runs that make use of 2P Tails, because that is banned in all current categories. At the moment I'm working on an improvement video for Aquatic Ruin 2, a level in which I use Tails to grab 2 rings normally inaccessible to get the Perfect Bonus, that's the only way it's possible.
Some thoughts I have regarding the max rings criteria are: -2P Tails should be allowed if using Sonic, at least for levels that require him for achieving Perfect Bonus such as Hill Top 2 -For levels that have rings stuck inside walls such as Mystic Cave 2 and Oil Ocean 2, only the main rings should be required (Like 280 in MC2 and 245 in OO2, as seen in my IL runs) -You must be holding all rings when you finish the level -Though idk if a max rings category would work for Casino Night Zone, since you can max out the rings using the slots and there's already the Gambling% category for that
Why Sonic 2? In my opinion, the levels are compact like Sonic 1, and using spindash they can be completed relatively quickly even when going for max rings. Plus, you get to see parts of the game even glitchless runs skip over!
Let me know what you guys think!
Hello,
I posted a little while back about the run I'm working on and I will be recording attempts soon. However, I was unable to procure a North American boot disc for my Game Boy Player, and thus I've downloaded the VBA emulator and a SMA rom. I have the stuff on an ASUS gaming laptop and an Xbox controller configuration, and the laptop can capture footage perfectly fine, but what is the protocol for setup so I can make sure my run is verified upon submission?
Hello,
I'm working on a run of this game that completes the Yoshi Challenge. However, the rule set doesn't specify if you have to start from a file that hasn't collected any eggs yet or if you can use a file that already has completed the game 100%. The difference obviously being that in the former there are cutscenes of the Yoshi eggs falling and hatching which will add a significant amount of time to the run.
