I don't know that he did, it just looks like it from the way it played out, I could be wrong on that.
I've submitted a 'fastest to 100 points' run, with the CPU on easiest. I've also subsequently beat that run, but. It's a very fun category to play, that's for sure
Since the new category is a thing now!
Let me propose the settings/rules and let me see what y'all think.
Timing begins: on team selection Timing ends: the frame the score appears on screen showing 100 or more points.
Mine was on V. Easy difficulty, V. Slow timer, Tag Off, CPU Assist Off, but I think we can allow the options to be open to whatever the runner wishes... other than tag mode which I don't know, I imagine all of my other options are the fastest available.
Maybe 40watt's idea of adding a difficulty column would be advisable if we get more runners? Until then, c'mon folks run this! This category is fire. I've got proof sub-5 is possible, with proof that I'm cursed and this game is troll-city. This hurt.
Sub 5 or riot.
Hey no worries. In the original NBA Jam it's not stated, and Rantron said "As far as changing the settings prior to a run (computer assistance, difficulty, timer speed) currently I have left it up to the runner to decide what will get things done the fastest. " so I was going off that... my current WR has it on.
If we disallow it for both I guess I've got an excuse to grind the games again :) I was just hoping for closer to a universal ruleset. Also I'll have to look but I think the record at the time when I was grinding had it on too. (EDIT he doesn't show it but I think 40WattRange's run has it on as well)
Dilemma, thy name is Jam.
Hey everybody, just because I adore this game, I wanted to start a thread and see if anybody had any interest in further categories/ways to run this game.
I've thought about doing a lot of things: biggest blowout would be great but would probably fit at TwinGalaxies more than this. Fastest to 50 or Fastest to 100 points could be something we could maybe do. I've wanted to do an all-27 teams run for a while. higher difficulty runs could be a lot of fun too
Anybody got any specific ideas or things to go for to add categories?
I will preface this with saying partially this is me having been dumb, however, I think I have good points as well!
I spent some time learning and grinding out NBA Jam (non-TE) for SNES and nabbed WR, though it's awaiting verification as I write this.
Past few days, I was doing some running of TE (SNES) for ya know, giggles, and ended up with 6:28, a pretty dang optimized run.
(3-0 score, probably only about 3 seconds to save)
but before I submitted, I realized I had tag mode on: looking at the rules here I figured the rules specific would only differ from standard JAM based on the TE-only features. Oops.
Now of course I would stand to "benefit" from allowing tag mode for that reason, however
1)I think if this game were to be run more in the future, it'd probably benefit from sharing as much of a ruleset with the non-TE iterations as possible, hence allowing tag mode, especially since we're allowing difficulties and fast timer,
2)If not, I humbly request it be made more prominent in the listed rules, since it's essentially the only 'standard' option that differs from the normal NBA Jam ruleset and fools like me can easily miss it (well, at least THIS fool can!)
Obviously there's not much of a community to vote here so I feel like I'm almost talking to one person, but hey. You're the boss :)
A sister-site would be great, but it would need tight-integration I think to really make it great: almost as if the high-scores were another part of the categories on this site, if you will. I'd be all for allowing it on the main site as well: it could easily be a category in some games, especially less popular ones, and could fit into category extensions or whatnot on the big games.
There's definitely going to be some issues or confusion that arises somehow... but who knows. Perhaps even if all the data on the back-end is the same, maybe a separate domain, so that the speedrun.com defaults to only, or first, listing speedruns, and scoreblah.nut defaults to high scores? They could still all be accessible from both, if you will. I dunno. At any rate, I'd really like to see it though, because I think it would be a huge boon for popularity of score gaming and especially arcade gaming.
Just to give a heads up if anybody is interested:
Game came in two versions, one with wheel and pedals, one with stick and buttons, so playing with a stick, gamepad, or keyboard is totally fine (though, in the arcade with the 360 wheel it's a trip, spinning that bastard like crazy!)
As of typing this (June 16th 2018) my Sum of Best is in the 10:09 range... Feel like for me 10:11.x would be about as low as I could conceivably grind it. Just wanted to give a quick rundown of stuff that might be useful.
Emulator versions: if you want to submit to TwinGalaxies, or at least use the standardized MAME version, look up WolfMAME: it's a version of MAME that doesn't allow save states, pauses, etc. to try to help alleviate cheating. Over here as mod I'm cool with any MAME version atm, but WolfMAME is a good way to go about it, and you'd be able to submit to TG if you so desire. I'm currently using Wolfmame .0196 and had great luck.
Note that as you complete levels without continuing, the in-game timer speeds up to make life harder for you, and IL runs use IGT exclusively, so you're going to want to do IL runs from startup.
Timing starts on level-selection from what I've been able to tell cars sound different and 'feel' different, but the general speed is the same as far as I can tell, or at least very close. I wish I could get more concrete info on the cars but at this point, it seems to come down to what you prefer.
Starting at level 05 is not necessary, I've just found it the easiest overall route. Levels get harder as you complete levels without continuing so I've found this the best route: timing rules make it any order you wish.
TECH: General rule is you want to
a)cut corners as much as possible (shortest distance is always a straight line)
and
b)turn the car as little as possible (shortest distance, straight line, etc.)
This includes really limiting how much your car skids/fishtails. Generally speaking, the noisier the turn, the slower it is, but you can only limit squealing, not eliminate it.
One very important tactic is what I call tap-turning: by quickly tapping, releasing, and tapping the steering direction again, you can adjust direction through turns while keeping the rear-end from skidding out as much as possible. You'll get better as you practice it, but this should be your default through many corners.
To help shave time, watch the IL videos to find shortcuts and skips: I doubt they're perfectly optimized but you can find the major skips/strats I've managed to find. Be careful though: ILs won't have the added troll-cars that will happen later in the full run.
Well no. Not quite scores. Just that there wasn't a community that was running this full game, but there's apparently people that ran individual stages of this game prior. (It's a racing game so the differentiation between scores and times is.... weird, at the least)
I just wasn't sure if it was cool to add the stuff from outside, or how quite to do it. Thanks y'all
Hey all.. I just submitted (and it's up!) a run for an arcade game. There's, afaik, not a community to run it. However, there is one full game run listed on Twin Galaxies (which I would beat by... well, depends on the timing rules, but it would be beat.)
But, there's a few IL records of this game on TwinGalaxies. I really want to spread the word of this game and get it out there, and IL levels make a lot of sense (it's a racing game)
If this has already been addressed I'm sorry but I couldn't find it. Is there any established bit about adding outside runs/scores, is it a no-no, is there a method, etc.? I'm fine with whatever the established rules may be, but if there's precedent for something like this, adding those IL records might be a nice boost to getting this game off the ground.
Thanks!
Hey all.
So I've recently made this game available on Speedrun.com. Timing rules are available. Hope y'all run it!
If anybody has any questions or whatnot, please let me know. I'd adore if this game got more love. This has been one of my fav games since childhood!
Hey all. I'm new to the speedrunning community but I've been playing TSB forever.
Are there any categories we can come up with that would make this a legit game to compete on? Tecmo Bowl has speedruns for time on wins and losses, this TSB has one entry for most rushing yards...
Is there a way we can make a category competitive? I know there's a big scene for this game... any ideas?
