[WIP] SuperTux 0.6.x Skips

__**This is a documentation of all currently known skips, their name, and founder**__

Most skips need to be applicable to RTA in some form. Anything that saves over a second is deemed worthy of noting here.

__**Entrance to the Cave**__

**3rd Button Skip (3BS)**

Entrance to the Cave has 3 buttons, the first 2 have pretty obvious skips, as well as the powerupless variant of kaizo jumping off of them. However, the 3rd button has a bit less of an obvious skip. You need to have an air flower and jump on the middle of the spring, and as the enemies unload (as of version 0.6.0) you need to glide-stall to the ceiling. In more newer versions, the enemies dont unload and you need to judge when to glide-stall. This saves 5 seconds. Discovered by Servalot.

__**Under the Ice**__

**Bottom Skip/Long Glide Skip (LGS)/TAS ICG Kaizo**

In Under the Ice, you can skip a large portion of the level by abusing a lot of stacked air flower's and the glide time you get given with that. This allows you to simply glide to the other upper ledge of the level. There is however a new known variant the TAS does which does not require stacked air flowers. This saves around 9 seconds with the best movement considered, as you can reach a comfy cycle at the end. The Air flower variant was discovered by zwatotem and first theorised by Servalot.

__**A Fork in the Road**__

**ICG Kaizo**

In A Fork in the Road, you can ICG at the beginning of the stage to use later as a global cycle skip. By throwing an Ice cube at the wall, it bounces back against it and tux, while jumping, can jump on it again to gain additional height. This is similar to the shell-jumps that are done in Kaizo Mario hacks, so it is called Kaizo here as this technique is also done at other points in the game. This trick saves about 4 seconds. I think this trick was first done by zwatotem using a "sticky" ice cube, a glitch in 0.6.1 where throwing an ice cube while holding down causes it to get stuck in walls, making this trick significantly easier, but slightly slower, losing about 1 second.

__**Ice in the Hole**__

**Ice in the Hole Skip**

The player can glide-stall with an air flower over the pit, by doing repeated taps of the jump button. By timing the jumps rhythmically, the player can hover over long distances without the need to stack multiple air flowers. This trick saves 24 seconds. This skip was discovered by Servalot.

Modern versions of this skip do it with 1 air flower stacked, which makes it less forgiving*

**Global Cycle Skip**

Global Cycle skip is a collection of optimal, difficult movement which culminates in reaching the end elevator cycle early enough to not have to wait for its descent. Discovered by Servalot, this saves 8 seconds. Originally thought to be impossible, but small timesaves such as:

1. Duck-Jump fast acceleration to reach the bouncy snowballs earlier (saves about 0.5).
2. Ducking underneath the bouncy snowballs at the beginning.
3. Ladder-cancel Backflip (Or any kind of jump cancel using the ladder).
4. Krosh Skip - Jumping ever so precisely under the Krosh so that you don't have to wait for it to fall down.

It is theoretically possible to achieve a double global cycle skip using TAS with a combination of inhuman ICG Kaizos*

**Backflip Skip And Backflip Skip Skip**

At the end of the level, the player can perform a backflip to skip pressing the final button of the level, which involves backtracking. This saves another good 30 seconds approximately. In individual level (IL) speedruns, the player can stack enough air flowers to completely skip having to backflip, saving an additional second. The TAS performs an ICG earlier in the stage and then a Kaizo to skip the backflip, since it only has one air flower stacked, but this is just as fast as the IL. Discovered by Servalot.

__**End of the Tunnel**__

**Ceiling Clip Skip**

This level has a lot of short movement-based small skips which can add up. Additionally, the player can clip into the ceiling and jump up while out of bounds in order to get on the roof of the stage. The player cannot hold any direction on the arrow keys while doing this, and must be at least big-tux in order to clip, as it involves damage boosting. Luckily this was relevant for RTA for a while as the player can damage boost to lose their air flower and immediately get it back in the next stage, as it coincidentally is available then. Discovered by Servalot.

The old route saved 4 seconds with the skip, but lost 2 seconds to having low speed in the level before re-grabbing the air flower. This still saves time in ILs*

__**A Path in the Clouds**__

**First Button Skip**

This pretty simple skip requires a small glide with the air flower over the two non-moving platforms, which are normally activated by the first button. This saves a decent amount of time, roughly 4 seconds if you catch the first cycle powerupless. Discovered by Servalot.

**Second Button Skip**

The second button skip was found much later in 2020, as it is quite precise. It requires a long glide at first, then letting go of glide and then glide stalling immediately after, to barely make it on the platform without having to go press the 2nd button, saving 3s. Discovered by Servalot.

__**Between Two Glaciers**__

**Chasm Skip**

This skip is pretty huge. It saves around 20 seconds alone, and avoids having to go press a button at the bottom of the chasm, essentially bridging the gap between the two 'glaciers'. It involves a long air flower glide, which needs a lot of stacked air flowers, and kaizo off the wall to get the remaining height. Discovered by Servalot in mid 2020, a while after 0.6.0 came out.

**Crumble Skip**

This skip is similar to 3BS. It simply involves the player jumping off the spring with an air flower to scale the wall to avoid waiting for the crumbling tiles. This saves over a second. This can also be done with a backflip, but doesn't save as much time. Also works with an ice cube.

__**Living in a Fridge**__

**Ladderskip**

A simple backflip here avoids having to manoeuvre around to the right, and climb up the ladder. This must be performed with the air flower. The TAS does an excruciatingly difficult and RNG dependent variant of this trick saving over a second over the backflip. Discovered by Servalot

__**The Crystal Mine**__

The entire level is skipped. Seriously. This quite literally skips the entirety of Crystal Mine. It's possible both powerupless and with the air flower, and saves over a minute. Discovered by Servalot on day 1 of release of 0.6.0.

If you are new to SuperTux, or at least new to speedrunning this game, here are a few basic useful tips that every ST speedrunner should know ;)

__**1) Join the Tux Speedrunning Community**__
This is not a tip for the game itself… but being part of the community is essential to improve.
Members of the community don’t usually talk on the speedrun.com forums: we use the **"Tux Speedrunning Community" Discord sever.**

Make sure to join if you want to run this game: that’s where everything happens. Any contribution or competition will be very appreciated (we're always excited to see new runners ^^), and even if you don’t speedrun (yet?), you’re still gladly welcome into the server ;)

__**2) Version**__
So you want to speedrun SuperTux... but which one? There are multiple versions of SuperTux.
Here are the 3 main categories, based on which version you are playing on:

- **0.1.x** - recommended version is **0.1.3**.

The next paragraphs adress **versions 0.5.x and 0.6.x only.**

__**3) Disable Transitions**__
In any world when you enter a level, there’s by default a black circle closing on Tux before it shows the **"black screen"** (where the level name is displayed with a Tux walking animation).
The black circle closing on Tux is called a **transition**, and it takes almost **2 seconds** to fade into the black screen.
To disable transitions, **go to Settings and unselect "Enable Transitions".** Once it’s done, you will **get to the black screen instantly** when entering a level.
If you go for a fullgame run, make sure you practice your level entries, as you want to spend the least amount of time possible into a black screen. ;)

__**4) JUMPING!**__
By hitting Space bar, you can jump! (great tip :O )
Seriously though, as speedrunning this game consists of holding Right arrow almost the entire time to run on the right, jumping is the most important gameplay mechanic in a run.
There’s no secret for improving your jumps: the more you play the game, the better you will be at jumping.

It gets a bit complicated when it comes to **bouncing on enemies.**
There are three types of "enemy bounces", if you want to learn about it, here's the "Types of jumps" guide :

It seems complicated but with a bit of practice it will become automatic. ;)

__**5) Start with ILs**__
(IL = Independant Level)
Before running a whole world (which can contain up to 30 levels), I recommend you to begin with running one level at a time. 
Here is why:
- it’s **not long to run** (30s-1min)
- the timing method is **IGT** (= In-Game Time). That means you **don’t need to have a separate timer**, and you get **instant feedback** at the end of the level.
- after running the ILs of a specific world, it will be **easier to run this whole world**, as you’ve already practiced a lot for each level.

You just need to **record your run entirely** and **in one take** ("OBS Studio" is just fine for that), and that’s it you have a valid IL run. :)

All Known SuperTux 0.5.X Skips

**This Guide will cover skips that preferably save an abnormally large amount of time (larger than ~1 second) and will not feature dev intended skips such as the Ice in the Hole Secret.**

__**Treehouse Skip**__

This skip was found by Servalot, where you run up to a dragon, bounce off of it and make your way to the end of the level. It requires a bit of time to wait for the dragon, so it only saves ~6s. https://youtu.be/zDwdpX2sEjY

__**A Village in the Forest Cutscene Skip**__

This skip is broken down into 2 parts. First is the simple Button skip found by UbuntuJackson, which saves about 20 seconds, not having to wait for the slow platform. His strategy involved Skipping the button, going to watch the cutscene, and simply damage boosting across the Pit. I theorised some ways to skip the cutscene trigger and came with a sort of precise setup, jumping off one of the leaves. You can also do it leafless, which is more reliable but requires a bit more precision. An example of this can be found here: https://youtu.be/tETnpMnnfKs

__**Down The Rabbit Hole Skip aka "dragon skip"**__

This is one of the largest and most relevant skips in RTA Forest world, and was discovered by Servalot a while ago. It's one of the hardest tricks to perform simply because of how buggy and random the dragons are, you have to be very careful with your movement so that they don't dive for you at the wrong time. The first variation of this involves waiting for the top dragon to reverse himself using the block. Here's a video from UbuntuJackson showing how the skip works: https://youtu.be/40RKTUXWNLY

Servalot theorised another way to do the skip, by getting a buggy dragon to dive. Buggy dragons are quite rare, for unknown reasons. The way this works is that the dragon thinks tux is right under him just as the dragon is loaded on screen. __**The Silent Walls "Snail Bounce" and "Elevator Skip"**__

The Silent Walls is broken in two ways, Snail Bounce, and Elevator Skip. Both were found by Servalot. The Snail Bounce Skips a small section to the left, where you have to precisely platform, or damage-boost through some stationary saws. Next, is the Sequence Break that follows directly after the Snail Bounce. This one saves even more time, roughly 15 seconds. This involves setting up the snail in a precise spot, which you need big tux for to prepare. You then bounce on the snail, and bounce off. This is to reset your jump. You then do a *Buffered Variable* jump and release space just before the peak, for a fraction of a second. You then hold down space, and bounce up to the button, effectively Skipping the elevator entirely. There is a fast cycle in combination with the Snail bounce that saves time, so for this to be most effective it would require the fast cycle at the beginning to get the Power-Up, Snail Bounce, and the Second Buffered Variable Snail Bounce to save over 20 seconds in total. __**Light and Magic "lamp skip"**__

This is a pretty simple, but also quite small timesave where you use the green lamp to jump over the gap instead of going back and grabbing a lamp. It saves around 2 seconds.

Some of the secrets in official worlds that are shown in here are done in 040, but they are all the same in 051.

Developer Mode

(This guide is relevant for 051 mainly, some informations might be not true for posterior versions)

Developer Mode enables a cheat menu that is **useful – and must only be used - for practice.**
DM is **allowed for level runs,** as long as the cheat menu **isn’t used nor opened** during the run.
DM is **BANNED FOR FULLGAME RUNS.**

__**How to enable DM:**__
- close the game if it’s open.
- **For Windows:** go into **%appdata%\supertux2** and open the file named **"config"** with a text editor.
**For Linux** (and possibly macOS), the path to **config** is **~/.local/share/supertux2/config**
- in the first few lines of the file, you will find **"(developer #f)",** and simply turn the **"#f" into a "#t",** then save the document.
Now you can open the game, and in the Options you can see a new, already selected setting "Developer Mode". Here it is. :)
- to **disable DM,** you just need to **unselect the "Developer Mode" setting** and exit the Options. Make sure you do that **before any fullgame run.**

__**How to use the cheat menu:**__
Once DM is enabled, you can go in **Options → Setup Keyboards** to see a new **"Cheat Menu" key,** which you can bound to any key you want.

You can use the cheat menu:
__**1) in a worldmap.**__ Therefore, you will access to these features :
**- Bonus: Grow** → gives you instantly a big Tux with no powerup
**- Bonus: Fire** → gives you one Fireflower
**- Bonus: Ice** → gives you one Iceflower
**- Bonus: Air** → gives you one Airflower
**- Bonus: Earth** → gives you one Earthflower
**- Bonus: None** → gives you small Tux
**- Finish Level** → turns instantly the red dot of the level you’re on into green
**- Reset Level** → turns instantly a level dot into red and deletes the level data
**- Finish Worldmap** → turns instantly all the level dots in the map green
**- Reset Worldmap** → turns instantly all level dots red, and deletes all level data for this world
**- Move to main spawnpoint** → teleports Tux into the beginning of the map

__**2) in a level.**__ Then, you will have access to these :
**- Bonus: Grow** → gives you instantly a big Tux with no powerup
**- Bonus: Fire**→ gives you one Fireflower
**- Bonus: Ice** → gives you one Iceflower
**- Bonus: Air** → gives you one Airflower
**- Bonus: Earth** → gives you one Earthflower
**- Bonus: Star** → gives you one invicibility star
**- Shrink Tux** → damages Tux once
**- Kill Tux** → instantly kill Tux
**- Finish Level** → brings you instantly back in the map, with the level turned green as if you just finished it
**- Activate Ghost Mode** → Ghost Mode is a mode in which gravity and Tux’s hitbox are disabled and you can fly him around the level pretty fast using the Arrow keys. To go out of Ghost Mode, press the Action button.

How to run the full game well (my tips)

For beginners who die a lot.

1. Take it easy. It's a speedrun, but if there is somewhere you always die at, take care. A few seconds slower is always better than up to a minute lost due to death.
2. Use secrets to your advantage. They may not be the quickest way to perfectly speedrun that particular level, it will solve difficulties and death is worse than a couple of seconds in delay.
3. Use certain bonus blocks and similar to get past some tricky jumps where a trampoline or similar may otherwise be necessary.
4. Pickup powerups occasionally to assist a part otherwise difficult. This is allowed.

This should shave a couple of minutes off your time!

Power-Up Stacking, Power-Up Swapping, Fireball, and Glide mechanics.

__**Power-Up Stacking is a very useful tool**__

When you collect a Power-Up, whether its Air, Earth, Ice or Fire, Tux can collect another of the same Power-Up, and granted he hasn't lost the previous one, can stack the two together.

**Fire Flowers:**

Fire flowers when stacked give an extra bullet to be on screen at a time.

**Air Flowers:**

Air flowers when stacked give 0.5s extra glide time (This is slightly random and a bit variable, we're not exactly sure how this works still...)

**Ice Flowers:**

Ice flowers when stacked give an extra bullet to be on screen at a time.

**Earth Flowers:**

???

__**Power-Up Swapping:**__

When you have, lets say, a tier 5 Air Flower (an Air Flower stacked 5 times). Granted you haven't taken damage, you can collect a Fire flower. You can then chose to stack the Fire Flower a bunch, if you wanted. If you then would go back to collect another Air Flower, the previous stack you had, 5, is kept, and you also receive the bonus tier you just collected, Granted you haven't taken damage whilst swapping them. This is very useful in 100% speedruns on newer versions, and give the game a lot more depth when it comes to routing.

__**Fireball + Glide mechanics:**__

You can reverse a fireball and *manipulate its trajectory* based on Tux's movement. For example, if you're travelling at full speed, reverse and immediately throw a fireball, its trajectory will reflect the opposite effect of the velocity of Tux. Glide mechanics can be manipulated by a technique I invented called "hover stalling" or "glide stalling"
This is where while airborne, you repeatedly tap jump to a specific rythm. Finding this rythm is kind of weird. This is especially useful in the newer versions, especially in "Ice in the Hole"

Setup the game for a valid run

To make a valid run, you need to start with a fresh profile.

To select a profile, go into the options > select a profile.
Then select a profile you never used before.
When you are out of fresh profiles (there are only 5), you need to go into supertux config folder and delete them.
On GNU/Linux, this folder is ~/.supertux2/
On Windows it’s %appdata%/.supertux2

Delete the folders from profile1 to profile5 (Actually I like to keep profile1 to work on individual levels, I only delete from profile2 to profile5).

Then you go into story mode and the story introduction should start. You can skip it by using the menu and using «Abort level».

Timing starts after the first frame you enter the first level, for any world. For Antarctica runs, there is a trick called "Cutscene Growth Abuse" where if you exit the first frame of the cutscene, you get to keep your powerup, hence starting with a growth powerup instead of nothing. This trick is allowed for runs, such that you show yourself entering the profile, doing the trick, and then starting timing as normal. If you re-attempt the trick already in a profile, you can re-enter the cutscene level to attempt the trick again, such that you show yourself doing it. You must start with 100 coins on your profile.

SuperTux 0.6.X - All Icy Island Secret Area Locations

Useful if you're learning the 100% Icy Island 0.6.X speedrun category, or if you're just doing a casual completion of the world.

SuperTux 0.6.x: Full-game Forest World Setup

Unlike previous versions, in SuperTux 0.6.x the forest world is no longer available under "Contrib Levels" by default. The player is supposed to first finish Icy Island before sailing off to the Forest World.

For speedrunning there are two setups which allow for quickly resetting forest world runs:

## **Showing "Forest World" under "Contrib Levels":**

*This is the recommended method, as it's the most convenient.*

- Inside your SuperTux user directory, create a folder named "levels" if it doesn't already exist. Afterwards, create a folder named "world2" inside of the "levels" folder.
- In the "world2" folder, create an empty text file named "info". Paste the following into the file:

- Save the changes to the "info" file. Restart SuperTux and you should see "Rooted Forest" listed under "Contrib Levels".

## Using a modified "Story Mode" savegame, which has Tux located in the forest:

- Start SuperTux and select a fresh profile.
- Enter "Story Mode" and exit the intro level.
- Using the "Cheat Menu" (press F1; you must have Developer Mode activated) go to the level "The Crystal Mine".
- Open the "Cheat Menu" once again and press "Finish Level".
- Go up and Tux will sail towards the "Forest World".
- When you're at the "Forest World", exit the world and make a separate copy of the current profile folder.

Any time you need to reset, after you have deleted all profile folders ("profile1", "profile2", "profile3", "profile4" and "profile5"), make 5 copies of the separate forest profile folder and rename each copy as one of the profile folder names listed above.

SuperTux glossary

- ST = SuperTux
- Versions of the game are usually called without dots (e.g. "v0.5.1" can be "051", "v0.6.x" can be "06x", v0.4/5.x can be "04/5x" or even "045x", and so on...)
- BI = Bonus Island
- ICK = Instant Cube Kick
- ICG = Instant Cube Grab

TAS was made by me, took about 80 hours. This saves a ridiculous 47.2s over the RTA world record, and features some impressive movement, ICGs, kaizos, cycle skips, and map movement.

Types of jumps Glossary + Boosting

These are what i usually call the different kinds of jumps you can get in tux.

Jumping onto enemies can have different out comes depending on how you control the jump button.

**Neutral** - Jumping on an enemy, letting go as you peak, such that you get a mediocre 2.5-ish tile bounce. This is like tapping space onto an enemy basically.
**Locked High** - Jumping, letting go at some point during the jump, and holding space before you land on the enemy. This locks your upwards momentum. This is useful in rare, tight cases where you don't have enough horizontal space to have a variable jump.
**Variable** - Jumping, continually holding space as you land onto the enemy, and being able to let go at any height you wish after landing on an enemy. This one is incredibly useful for some scenarios, and also still counts if you hit your head on a ceiling. Sometimes you can cancel the jump immediately (or even slightly before, if you're good) and tux will do a *very* small jump, under 2-ish tiles. This resulting jump is called a "low-bounce" and it gives a smaller downwards momentum than a neutral.
**1-frames** - Simply tapping the jump button for a singular frame. Tux will jump under 2 tiles high.
**0-frames** - Pressing jump and pause on the same frame gives tux 1px of height. This isn't really too useful mainly because its unexplored but it might have some future use in investigating Yeti boss fights in TAS.

**Boosting and small tricks**

Whenever you jump on an enemy, there are two points of the enemy that can push you backwards or forwards a few frames. I personally call this a displacement, but its more common now to call it a *boost* considering you can almost see the visual effect of this trick. I found that this possible to also do against solid hitboxes, back when I started running this game.

There are also types of jumps called ICGs, or Instant ice cube grabs, (portmanteau is ICG) which relies on tux jumping into a specific area of an ice cube and holding action. This usually means they're frame perfect. ICGs are trajectory-achieved in that if you have more downwards momentum it seems to be more common to ICG. sometimes ICGs are impossible due to how pixels align.

Hyperspeed occurs when tux throws an owl's skydive behind him and re-grabs it a few frames later, running forward for a few frames, and then throwing it behind him again to glitch it, and then grabbing it for a single frame before continuing to run forward. This then glitches the skydive from left to right and boosts tux forward. It was described as boosting tux each frame, but the pixel distance a skydive gives each frame is more than a maximum boost (12px, or 2.4F).

There is also a lesser known trick where you can jump into the hitbox of a snowman in such a way it kills both stages of it. I've done this once with an air flower and never reproduced it. This is called an "instant snowman stomp" or ISS for short.

Sometimes boosts are *impossible* as demonstrated by my TAS here: https://youtu.be/_cxj-DqC4uA where at the beginning, it is impossible to frame boost off the bonus block immediately. This is due to pixel alignments. If you've ever seen MK64 runs and have heard of "0-framed" this applies here. There is sometimes no frames where tux is able to boost because he is either too far behind, or ahead, on each consecutive frame of the attempt such that he cant position his hitbox in a way to nudge him forward.

Play around with these kinds of jumps. Look at ILs and see how people use them. They're very useful when pushing the game for more optimal times, since you don't have to slow down as much to avoid awkwardness with enemies.
