I know the rules don't say one way or the other on turbo function(s) and correct me if I'm wrong but I'm pretty sure most MGS games allow it in some form
I'm just getting kinda tired of mashing through the cutscenes and was thinking about assigning a turbo button for cutscene skipping
I'm not sure if there would be any actual gameplay advantages for turbo but before using it in a run I figured an actual discussion of the topic should be had
Just the option. Don't need them for codecs but I'm used to it with MGS1 and 2 with other mashing. The less on my old ass wrists the better. Can't really think of any turbo advantages strategy wise
Turbo is not currently allowed for Twin Snakes. It's not explicitly in the rules because most speedruns in general do not allow turbo. Some other MGS games eventually legalized turbo. The main argument was due to accessibility for people with physical disabilities or challenges. Mainly stuff like Solidus torture which on some versions/difficulties you had to fastly mash for around a minute and it turned people off who couldn't do it or just didn't want the arm pain. In the end it was allowed for the whole game which saves significant time over someone who does not use turbo.
Twin Snakes has no such impossible torture sequences. Codecs can be auto-skipped. Cut-scenes do not require turbo mashing to move through optimally.
I don't support turbo for Twin Snakes on emulator or console. The emu category was created with the intent to open the game up to more people since the game has become increasingly more expensive. Ultimately the goal is to merge the emu and console categories down the line if/when a version of Dolphin releases that matches the Gamecube experience. (we're getting closer than you might think with newer versions.)
As such the continued intent is to keep rules of running on emu as close to console as possible. So no widescreen mod, exotic settings, fast disc speed, and no turbo.
Agreeing for Turbo Especially with the MG Saga being so cutscene- and Codec heavy
In general I’m pro Turbo, but I can’t see much use of it outside of skipping cutscenes maybe. For the most part I’ve not been pressing buttons much repeatably to do a boss fight for example. Mgs2 is full of turbo advantages for boss fights. In tts i guess it cant hurt and hence feels like a “whatever” choice.
But it’ll be different between a pc enabling turbo on emu vs a console run not having The same advantages.
So idk, I’m pro turbo in general. But don’t see why it would be beneficial in this game specifically.
I used it on a few practice runs recently for cutscene skipping and just found it to be a little more relaxing But I suppose the nature of a speedrun isn't relaxing in general lol
I'm fine with or without Just wanted proper confirmation and or discussion before using in actual runs
Currently we don't know of any significant advantages until it gets thoroughly tested. Even if there's basically none other than saving frames per cutscene skip (This is still an advantage that can lead to seconds saved), I'd still rather not allow it. The last thing this game needs is something that can open the door to more shenanigans exclusive to turbo like MGS2 has.
As was also mentioned, this game doesn't have a reason to allow it since there are no mandatory torture segments that people would struggle through, again like MGS2. You can skip cutscenes in this game with two different buttons ( Start and B ) so there are already mashing methods that aren't so hand/arm straining like vibration thanks to that, as well as just not mashing while the screens are still black so it saves you some energy.
Even if it's allowed, how would you even go about making it not a hassle to implement? Some of us still run the game even on emulator using official Nintendo controllers/adapters. I'm not about to go by a turbo controller, seek help with scripting nonsense to get my Gamecube controller to turbo on Dolphin, or relearn the game with an entirely different controller for easier turbo access.
I rather just leave this potential can of worms unopened.
looks like so far 2 in favor 2 not in favor myself and hau5 seem neither for or against
I would say it should be tested in runs thoroughly before it's on the table. It's mainly untested in TTS.
Or just flat out say cutscenes only or something. I really don't care either way I'm just pro turbo.
Right As others have already stated I don't see any major advantages but there also isn't a NEED for it like others in the series
I'm okay with keeping the status quo, but a clarification in the game rules would be helpful imo, considering other mgs games do allow it, one could potentially make the wrong assumption
And i don't see any large scale turbo specific testing being done anytime soon
I vote yes for emulator version. I mean, MGS2 works the exact same way with codecs and cutscenes and it has turbo allowed on PC, so it would make sense for TTS PC (emu) to have it allowed aswell. But only for codecs and cutscene, so it would have to be displayed on screen if turbo is enabled at the moment, so it avoids using it on bosses, torture etc.
But first it has to be fully tested imo
I'm in favor of turbo.
If there's no significant advantage besides cutscenes and codecs, then it seems more of a QoL change. That said, this is going to require extensive testing, including whether we can even turn it on and off at will or if (like Pazzo brought up) we can even display "Turbo" onscreen.
Going to consider this tabled for now and lock it. No real argument has been made either way so best just to leave as-is.
If the discussion comes up in the future a new thread can be made. This thread will be deleted eventually.
