Three days ago the game was working fine, then I changed nothing and now it crashes before I even get to the main menu. That happens 99% of the time I click play, then for no reason it launches ONCE and works until I close it again and we're back to crashing over and over and over...
I was using dgvoodoo+dxwnd combo for years with no issues and now my pc just seems like its cursed or something.
I have tried reinstalling the game, changing all kinds of settings and installing the windows 10 patch by felizpe. Same story every time. I did manage to get it to run inside of a VM but the performance was not great so I don't really wanna use that option.
How are you guys getting the game to run? Maybe something will work...
edit: I should mention, it's the type of issue where a small black box either disappears after a few seconds or sticks around until you terminate it with task manager.

I had tons of issues and finally got it working don't remember exactly what I did patch wise, I'm afraid to touch anything. I play on Win11 on almost vanilla setup with DDrawCompact for Win11 24h2 + 1.13 patch. It works better than it would on dgvoodoo from what I've tested, being able to run this at 240fps without breaking any physics, and including DInput8 but this doesn't make any difference for me for whatever reason (playing on 125hz G502X PLUS). I tried felizpe patch, It works flawlessly on Win10 (any version) and Win11 (24h1), but doesn't on 24h2 since ddraw wasn't updated for newer Win11. The only thing I haven't patched is the .exe, and so I use PowerISO to mount the KPC.iso and launch the game.
Game should work out of the box, adding only DDrawCompact. Should give it a try to install it with ddraw 24h2 even though you use win10.

yooo this installer actually works, thanks Jay. I no longer have to play in a vm with scuffed mouse and 0.5 second audio delay AND sometimes less than 24 fps xd
DDrawCompat is another thing I tried before that didn't seem to do much. It does say in the log file that it successfully hooks into the game, and the little black box looks different but the game doesn't start anyway.
Guess its time to do some Nightmare runs...
edit: One small issue I'm having with this version is that the hud is really small, but I guess I just gotta get used to it since there doesn't appear to be any setting for it.
Glad you got it fixed. Your hud problem is because of 1.13 patch, hud scales with resolution. I didn't had much time to look for new tricks and glitches since I've been bussy with university, but civvie's video made me wanna have a look at this game again. Also I plan on doing a full on remaster in Vulkan starting today, for my uni licence project and I'll be keeping all the assets as they are, glitches and speedrun tricks (Adding a tickrate of 48ticks/second so that you can speedrun it with 48fps physics but at buttery smooth 240fps+), the only change is that it will play better on newer machines. but this might take a while until it is finished.
Edit: Starbearer boots might be skippable
BTW I thought a Nightmare secret run would be super cool but for me at least the secrets are sometimes broken or missing and in later episodes there's like zero resources on where they are. I wasted a stupid amount of time on it on and off actually.
Technically a community patch could fix it I think scuty mentioned someone made a unity based lithtech map editor. I think the issue I had was decompiling it in win11 there's some ancient tools that just don't work or are no longer up on the internet.
I have all the files decompiled, textures, world data, scripts and animations, I can upload them on mega. Also about playing on Nightmare, I've finished a full no saves playthrough about a year ago. I don't remember much but I know there is a part in the celestial episode in waste wharf 2, where you have to fight 3 unipsychos, I almost gave up on the whole playthrough because of that, so the best of luck to you guys.

I'm doing some Nightmare all secrets runs right now. Beast king is kind of a pain in the ass because the first level crashes probably 50% of the time I go through it, after you get through that it doesn't crash much though. Then there's manor 2 which is slow as hell because of those secrets in the kitchen at the start.
Starbearer is pretty easy on the other hand, the others I haven't tried yet.
I don't know if skipping the boots would be a good idea since the higher jump is kinda useful(or even required?).
Spawner looks cool. be nice to have a custom one for each episode. If you need anyway help on the remake I can model and animate I can also map, well I have experience in trenchbroom and source sdk anyway
@elmle I'm pretty sure around episode 3 I just couldn't find the secrets I even used noclip
No boots in Starbearer The amount of Jack-o jumps you need to preform would make it way too slow too not get them I tried
