If you save in the right place (roughly 1/3 of the way up the ziggurat stairs) you'll be in the middle of the path for the dragon emperor's palace and won't have to spend time correcting your position. I experimented a bit with trying to skip the crypts/grotto, but it seemed using the save trick was always slower than just running past that skeleton, and I imagine the same holds true for the dog village.
