Before I start this, I want to say I'm not trying to insult speedrunning nor the site with this thread. I don't want it to turn into this thread. It's just some things are annoying when speedrunning, like maybe an annoying chat spam, or when you lose a 5 hour run to a crash. By no means is this meant to be a drama thread either. I also am not attempting to call anyone out. These also aren't meant to be problems that need to be addressed (at least with my reason), but just general annoyances you might have.
For me personally, I don't like how some people think that speedrunning is an elitist thing. The "you suck if you have a bad time" aspect.
definitely has to be game crashes and game breaking bugs that are beyond the players control
I think every game has that ¤one¤ thing (usually more). I've been running Harvest Moon 64 recently, and it's those random typhoons that can occur on any day during summer to sweep everything away.
More broadly, as far as I'm aware, random numbers are always a pain. I know some people love that kind of stuff, but I like to calculate and execute, and randomness makes it much more difficult.
EDIT: Wait, hang on... if your nerves get on your nerves, isn't that an endless cycle?
Forgetting to start splits and not noticing until halfway through a run.
People who consistently cannot follow basic rules that are clearly laid out on the leaderboards proceeding to complain when their runs get rejected.
hmm...
1.RNG 2.People (yes just people in general) 3.??? 4.Wrong meme format!
Inconsistent tricks/skips that can make or break your run
RNG is really the biggest peeve I have with speedrunning (especially games where you can't really manipulate the RNG to your favor).
Hardware issues, specifically my cheap Chinese Scart to HDMI converter to capture video. Everything else is fine, its just that occasionally blue screens me for 10 seconds.
Edit: "People who consistently cannot follow basic rules that are clearly laid out on the leaderboards proceeding to complain when their runs get rejected."
When there are no rules defined and a run gets rejected anyway >.< (ok this happened once :P)
- the frickin' elevator steps in Portal
- categories where the optimal route is boring (any% sitting under the elevator for half the run, but otherwise you'd probably just do seamshots in all chambers anyways, so there's really no diverse way to have an OoB category I'd be interested in)
- Not finding the gear you need for an NG+ run (Spend a good month grinding for a ring that may or may not be good in Diablo3)
- Me missing a wave of NDS capture, so I have to wait until Neal finds a new part seller and ships boards to merki
My resetitis! :(
ESPECIALLY when running Pin Bot on NES. That title screen takes FOREVER!
Firstly, NO GAME NO LIFE AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA COUGH COUGH
Sorry, as I was saying. Cut scenes are amazing! I love cut scenes, but not in speedrunning. Super Mario 64 is a prime example of this. You have to wait an entire minute before the game even begins. For the speed runner, this is a wonderful resting point. For the viewer, it's boring. The point of watching a speedrun is to see skill and during that cut scene, the person doesn't really have to do anything. It has many pros and cons of course but I personally am not a fan of them in speed runs.
RNG ... Do I need to explain?
Koopa Troopa Beach short cut in Mario Kart 64. No matter what I do I just can't make it all 3 times. :'( Unless I have the power of weed shrooms and dank memes. Kreygasm Then again I can't even breathe without my memes.
Auto scrollers Same reason as cut scenes. I just really feel it takes away from the concept of speedrunning.
RNG, oh my god. Can RNG just be on my side for once. For instance, Bowser's hammers in Super Mario Bros. almost always get me.
Firstly, NO GAME NO LIFE AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA COUGH COUGH
Is that a good scream or a bad scream? :D
