why the f would you pick the easiest game to run, not the most fun? Speedrunning is a hobby (until you get so many viewers that a twitch partner application might actually go through) that you mainly do for fun. Just picking what's easiest isn't fun at all, unless you're doing a game for meme that you personally find entertaining. If you want to have fun with Speedrunning, especially long-term, pick a game that you like so much that you could literally play it hundreds of times. If there's some hard tricks and challenges, even better, there's a long term goal, so your hobby doesn't get stale after a week. If you pick the easiest you're done in an hour and imo wasted that hour too.
as I don't have an invite to the discord yet, I decided to record the oob routes I found so far: Probably not going to run the category. I have finished good runs of inbounds and glitchless now, those are on my youtube (goign to render the glitchless run now, hoping it's on youtube in the next few hours)
in theory adding https://player.twitch.tv/?channel=channelname would work as a browserSource with either &!mute (not muted) or &mute (force mute) at the end because twitch player is funny like that and loves to forget your volume options for popouts. The VLC method is prefered as you can choose a quality that runs stable and it needs to, because livestreamer is very bad about losing connection.
Idealy the definition for non-sg state would be that you have to reset/load a save if you can see out of bounds in any way unless you're clipping through the ceiling via a fling, did not intent to clip through the ceiling and currently aren't crouching (crouching can be used to make clipping easier).
Then there are stupid things like invisible boxes and walls pretty much everywhere that make it look like you are out of bounds, but you're technically still inbounds. One of these is in 04 under the hallway close to the elevator to 05 and can only be seen in hammer. Jumping in that hallway during the inbounds sg route if you're not comfortable doing the abh, it's next to impossible to judge if you actually went oob there, especially when crouching, even with cl_showpos 1. While routing Still Alive inbounds I also found a very nice route in 01 that would look like the theoretical body would be oob, if there wasn't an invisible box attached to the wall, this one being special in that you can actually put a portal on it, while oob, where as that does not appear to be the case for the one in 04 under the hallway, in fact you can shoot a portal through it, under the immediate floor of that hallway. Note that the rules for this actually do not mention the theoretical body to be limited to inbounds, only the camera, so it's fine anyways: "Beat the game without having your camera or placed portals leave the map and without scripts, macros or cheats."
So there are quite a bunch of special cases for, appearing oob while inbounds that might need further review.
As I'm not sure if you're talking specifically speedruns here, I'd love to point out that most of the Diablo 3 seasons community seems to favor playing a reasonable amount of hours each day instead of marathoning for 16+ hours and then having to take a day off, with the advantage being that your overall gameplay quality is better. Then again seasons are basically a 3 month marathon, very different to speedruns.
I so far have only seen one run over 16hrs, which was Animal Crossing 100% (don't recall the category name, but it pretty much was 100%) and the runner invited a friend over and asked them to order food while hanging out during the run, which, other than the lack of sleep, seems healthy to me.
@xDrHelix: NDS Capture boards are currently in the making, last time I asked, Neal was waiting for a response from a new seller for the last missing component.
VBA is extremly inaccurate to the point where Bizhawk (which btw uses either the VBA-next or mGBA core for GBA games) during routing felt like a 10% speed improvement that I also felt when I finally got to try Pokemon Emerald on console. Trying stuff like Spinner manip in that game on VBA also showcases the input lag very well. And I'm not at all used to original hardware, because I haven't owned the game for about 7 years before that
I don't see 100% Orange Juice on here yet, so there ya go. Also GEAR. Seriously. I am the only person outside of this http://b-lee.net/gear/team team who has heard of this game which is already so old, if you try to do two runs without restarting, chances are it's going to crash on you after the first gold split.
While doing just Red/Blue or Yellow for gen1 does sound reasonable, if we are talking any% (as in with glitches allowed) those two releases are very different from eachother and I think the same goes for Gold/Silver and Crystal. Then there's Black2/White2 and the upcoming Ultra Sun/Ultra Moon. For any% glitchless I do agree tho, while there still are quite a few differences between R/B and Y and G/S and C, in both content and run length, for a marathon it makes sense to pick just one for the first two generations.
I've looked into just catching all Pokemon available in just the 3DS games before and it took me multiple days to catch all of them in Pokemon X casually. OR/AS is basically just a marathon of legendaries to catch and I'm not sure X/Y + OR/AS + Sun/Moon even gets you all of them. You might even have to play Pokemon Channel just for Jirachi and I'm pretty sure Mew is impossible to get and Celebi might now be available either. Then, unless Sun/Moon have done something about that trend, there are, at least from X/Y, multiple new Event-only Pokemon. Note that any form of special/promotional event is not allowed in a Speedrun.
Now to the topic of actually playing through all games. That requires: A Gamecube + capture device, Nintendo DS + capture card, Nintendo 3DS + capture card and all games. Time wise we are looking at: about 47:25:00 at averaging Top 10 pace for: Red, Yellow, Gold, Crystal, Sapphire, Leaf Green, Emerald, Pearl, Platinum, SoulSilver, Black, White2, X, Alpha Sapphire, Sun. After all that you effectively have about 10 Pokemon, already including Jirachi, which then also requires you to buy Pokemon Bank so you can use the Pokemon Transporter application.
All of the above is for any% glitchless, which is the main category for almost all of the games and assuming the "in every game" only applies to defeating the Elite Four, not catching all Pokemon. Unless you want something like this run about 15 times:
EDIT: This is also only including main series releases as listed here on speedrun.com. If you also want to spin-off games in there, good luck trying to buy Pokemon Conquest. Seriously. I have never seen that game.
I don't know if 20XX has the option to pick an output device, but if that's there, you could get a cheap USB-soundcard like the ones often packaged with headsets and have only the game's audio run through that and muting your main audio output device in OBS.
A fan project lead by ValveNewsNetwork recently recreated the Still Alive bonus maps from the xbox live arcade version of Portal. I started casually running it and the maps are a lot of fun. I'd love to have a leaderboard for this mod.
An unpack version can also be very easily made using the free tool GFScape to unpack the 3 vpk files. Haven't figured out how to get SourceSplit's autosplitting working yet tho.
Here's a link to VNN's video:
have you tried setting portal (aka hl2.exe) to a higher cpu priority? That fixed 99.9% of lags for me.
- the frickin' elevator steps in Portal
- categories where the optimal route is boring (any% sitting under the elevator for half the run, but otherwise you'd probably just do seamshots in all chambers anyways, so there's really no diverse way to have an OoB category I'd be interested in)
- Not finding the gear you need for an NG+ run (Spend a good month grinding for a ring that may or may not be good in Diablo3)
- Me missing a wave of NDS capture, so I have to wait until Neal finds a new part seller and ships boards to merki
It's only a problem in games that use in-game time
Was going to try that All Achievements category, but I could only reset the advanced chambers, by deleting a few files. Didn't see one for achievements and the other challenges.
Gear Full Circle is free c: http://www.speedrun.com/Gear_Full_Circle
Seriously what even happens here:
How about I finally get my Transmissionshy (= All Radios/Cameras, Glitchless) leaderboard? :P
