Thought I would start a thread for version differences considering I went down the rabbit hole tonight comparing the Gamecube versions. As far as I can tell, the USA and JAP versions (Spirits & Spells and Mahou No Pumpkin) are indistinguishable except for the language, but they're both different from the EUR release (Castleween).
-
Starting character: USA & JAP show Alicia/Ann walking in front of Greg in the opening in-engine cutscene, Greg disappears, and then you start the first level as Alicia/Ann. In EUR, Alicia and Greg are switched, and you start as Greg.
-
Falling rocks: the boulders that fall in level 1 have a different pattern in EUR. (Slightly trickier, I think.)
-
Cutscene swap glitch: I found a glitch in USA where if you enter a cutscene trigger while swapping, the cutscene won't play until you stop moving, and you don't trip cutscene triggers while you're in this state. JAP also has this glitch. EUR does not, but you can still achieve permanent cutscene glitch (don't know why you'd want to, it softlocks you to that level because you can't load the end level cutscene) by dying while going through a cutscene trigger.
Based on those, I assume that there are plenty of other differences throughout the game between USA/JAP and EUR on the Gamecube, and that it's definitely not just an emulator quirk. I haven't had a chance to look at PS2 versions but I imagine that's also a can of worms.
If anybody has any more version differences, post em here. I'll update this post with a list or something if my desire to do it exceeds the absurdity of the enterprise.
...and in two weeks he's already knocked a minute off the record!
I never actually ended up finishing my first casual playthrough because every time I sat down I discovered another glitch hahaha. Found a way to bypass cutscenes and level load boundaries just by swapping into a cutscene (aka Stop N Swop) and a friend found, like, a super jump that exploits Ann's attack freezing her in place (aka Stop N Hop), but we haven't found any actual uses for them yet.
Also Sjorec, why is the Japanese localization so good???
Hey all! This is just a thread to dump any scintillating moving eye candy you may have. I'm going to be generating a lot of "extremely high quality content" in the recent future and I don't want to just flood the forum with threads.
If you have any runs that you're definitely not gonna submit, go ahead and toss 'em in here too.
I wasn't going to broadcast this, but my irl running buddy was out of town and I had to show him a glitch. (I didn't stream in low latency because I'm dumb so a lot of the stream is me mentally trying to work around a 30 second delay.)

0:07 - 0:50 = Exploring "Cutscene Mode" aka "Switch 'n' Skip". (Spoiler: It's not that useful... yet...???)
0:53 - 1:03 = Level 2 crystal farm spot & jumping is clearly too good
1:04 = doing the level 2 gate skip
1:10 = Level 3 crystal farm spot
1:11 - 1:14 = Frogger skip? Also sometimes gates just don't open I guess???
1:22 = I get lost at the end of level 4.
1:23 - 2:22+ = Like 10 more levels or something.
I'm starting a list of glitches and a factsheet that I'll post to the guides when its starting to look halfway decent. I have some more clips and more interesting bits (like proving that when you restart a level it sets your crystals back to what you had coming in), but it's late and I have to compile some of this.
There was no one else running it then so I didn't spend enough time to get a run I was really proud of.
Kind of a chicken and egg problem: if nobody's running it, there's no competition, so nobody starts running it.
I think running the physical copy is going to be difficult. I still need a Gamecube, the game, a new RCA to HDMI converter (current one is busted and has a bunch of "snow"), and a new capture card, which is a grand total of like $250. There also aren't many copies of this game out there, but I found 2 on Amazon, 1 on Mercari, and 5 on EBay (one of which was going for $200! Factory mint!). Do you think running on Dolphin would be a problem?
Also what was your setup in that run? By the screen tearing and the sound it looks like you've got a camera pointed at a screen.
Hey y'all! Found this game scrolling through the depths of games with no active runners and realized that it's borderline criminal that it has no runs logged at all. So I tagged a friend who's on board to run it too and I made an account specifically for the clarion call of Spirits & Spells.
After checking the other threads, it looks like nobody's really sunk their teeth into the routing enough to get a run they're proud enough to record. Are any of y'all still out there? Would you come back to the game if there was a little bit of life in the community?
Also, any resources or suggestions from back in the day? Also, what version were you running on? Despite not having finished a casual run yet, I'm working on a draft of a guide. I just noticed the switchjump glitch, so that's going in.
