I found that taking the more 'interior' route over to the Dune Sea allowed for a really good landing area next to the ammo droid. The buddy was very helpful except he tried to steal the X, which I was able to recover. Landed a second time thinking he had died, so a few seconds were wasted. But getting a buddy at the Dune Sea at all is very rare.
