I've played the game casually for some time and enjoy in particular the sequence-breaking aspect, however I'm still clearly a novice at speedrunning and this is my first attempt at timing and recording a playthrough. This was done on OpenEmu which uses the SNES9x v1.60 emulator with my laptop's built-in keyboard. It also seems that there is not a whole lot of software support for speedrunning on Macs, so I apologize for the unsightly stopwatch app I've had to use.
Machball (I prefer this term to "mockball", since "mach" implies speed) is pretty much the only technique I use and it still takes me a few tries sometimes as you will see. Bosses are in general pretty rough, although I at least had a clean Draygon fight in this run.
A few specific remarks about the video:
- cringey walljump fails in Bubble Mountain just before Speed Booster (something like ~70 tries). I don't know what happened, on my previous playthrough I got it within 10 attempts
- misremembered the unpowered spike room before Phantoon to contain a Super Missile pack (from watching too many Randomizer videos recently); would not have gone in just for a Missile pack
- did not mean to enrage Phantoon (twice); the first time I pressed Item Select one too many times, and the second time I underestimated his health
- "I can't believe I'm not dead" save after Phantoon
- Ridley started out okay although I kept missing shots near the end and got frustrated so got hit more too
Things I learned from this run/to improve upon for next time:
- I tend to spam my shots which are nowhere near accurate, especially toward moving enemies
- I should count the shots that do connect in boss fights
- overall I need to work on basic technique for better movement and more sensible responses to Samus' environment
If anyone cared to watch this, comments on how to improve would be welcome.
