NES Suggestions Please?

Hi all,

The NES is probably the system I have least experience of. I have began practising SMB2/3 again this week, however in order to take a break inbetween practice to not get frustrated I was looking for more games to try.

Ideally I am looking for four or five platformer or sports games to play also, but that don't already have like 100 runners (so no SMB1/Metroid/Mega Man please); if people who are more experienced with the NES could give me suggestions of other games to check out, games like Alfred Chicken for example is perfect, I would appreciate it :)

Mad Max. Fairly new addition to the site. Known to be a p. bad game, may be difficult to learn the run.

Unrelated but the release date seems to be wrong, so I should probably contact the moderator about fixing that.

Edit: There also appears to be a time of 32hr 51min, when the run is actually 32min 51sec. Should also contact the mod about fixing that.

Although the first two games of the franchise get lots of runners, Ninja Gaiden 3 is much less popular but still a great game. Though I'm not sure it'll help much with frustration, as it's the hardest of the NG NES games. On the plus side, you could be the first to complete the "Pacifist (U)" category if you wanted a harsh challenge sans competition.

Journey to Silius is fun and has a solid soundtrack. Faxanadu's another game with a great soundtrack you could try if you want something a bit longer.

(I feel like soundtrack quality is more important with early systems, since it gets old faster.)

Two still way too unknown games would be Panic Restaurant and Little Samson, both pretty simple to pick up runs and really great late NES titles. Journey to Silius was named already, really good one. Gremlins 2 is another really fun game, same with Power Blade.

I could also suggest you Kid Icarus or Ghosts 'n Goblins but those are definitely not the easiest games ;-)

Since the sports games have been overlooked in this thread, I'll add that Super Spike V'Ball is a game I enjoyed, and one that seems like it'd be rewarding to speedrun.

The other sports game I really liked on the NES was Nintendo World Cup, but speedrunning that involves a lot of time parking the bus. If you just feel like checking out sports NES games, though, be sure to give that game a try. Pro-tip: if you play through a 2-player match on one of the alternate fields, then play tournament mode, that field will be used instead of the normal grass. (World Cup on ice!)

Nice, that World Cup game sounds fun for relaxing :)

Thank you all for the suggestions, I'll be sure to check them all out!

@ckellyedits although this doesn't quite fit your genre's of games, a good run to play game to play casually on the nes would be Mike Tyson's punch-out, specifically the IL's

a fair few of the fights are at their theoretical limit, matching the TAS. matching these TAS's ranges from fairly easy with practice (Don Flamenco 1) to pretty damn difficult (Great Tiger), so there's a nice learning curve, and it's pretty casual. If you go for any non-tas records, the difficulty will skyrocket.

if you have access to a snes, Super Punch-Out is the same deal but with 15/16 fighters at their TAS, with difficulty ranging from Gabby Jay and Bob Charlie (fairly simple with a bit of practice) to Bald Bull and Macho (immense pain and suffering), and then Narcis, the unmatched TAS.

Punch-Out (Wii) is probably similar to mtpo but i'll be honest i've never played that game.

if you fancy casually learning some of a speedrun while still having a decent shot at world records, i would recomend punch-out
