Any% Guide

# General Information

Ctrl+M will lock the mouse to the ScummVM screen when windowed.

For Any%, use Conquests of the Longbow version 1.0 and UrQuan's ScummVM unthrottled. If you use version 1.1 (the one distributed by GOG and Steam), catching the pixie is nearly impossible if you run the game unthrottled. There's a separate v1.1 category if you want to run that version with the official ScummVM.

**Menuing**

If you press Esc, the cursor will jump to the top of the screen directly above your current cursor position. So, as you become more comfortable with the run, it can be faster (and more accurate) if you find a visual cue, and quickly press Esc then left click.

**Inventory**

Press Tab to open inventory.

**Insert Storage**

Pressing the Insert key or middle mouse button toggles between Walk and the most recently used icon. You can use this to "store" an inventory item ahead of time, so that you can press Insert to get back to it quickly. For the sake of brevity, I'll just refer to pressing Insert, but you can do either input method.

**Snowy Skips**

In January of 2023, SnowyP discovered a way to skip camp cutscenes. As soon as the camp screen loads, press Insert or middle mouse button. This will turn the cursor into the walk icon. Walk into the cave, and walk back out. You've now skipped the dialog with your men (which happens frequently).

Once a character starts talking, you won't be able to do this, so sometimes the window is tight.

If you miss one of these, the run isn't dead, so if you're just starting out, don't worry if you don't hit all of them.

# Day 1

Restart the game. Some of the RNG for the game (the order and selection of riddles, the password Marian gives you, the solution to Fulk's puzzle box, etc.) gets set on game start. This is either when you select a new game after a fresh start, or when selecting Restart from the game menu.

If you save on the very first screen and restore to that for new runs, then every run would have the exact same RNG. So, a rule was added that runs must begin after a restart, and not a restore.

After restart, go into the menu and set detail down, speed up, and arcade down. Time starts on clicking "Play" after setting speed, arcade, and detail settings.

Hand on horn. You can skip getting money because the scholar will give you some at the fair.

Leave the cave. Snowy Skip the first set of dialog. Leave the cave again. Snowy Skip Friar Tuck's dialog.

Walk up, then up again to find the shooting glade. Skip dialog with right click, then use the map icon in the menu bar.

Click on Watling street next to where the overlook is. Walk right. After Little John leaves, wait for the peasant woman to show up. With only a few exceptions, the time you have to wait at the overlook is a random number of seconds between 10 and 20. (In practice, between 8 and 18 because of SCI timer behavior.)

While you're waiting for the peasant woman, right click to the bow icon, then press Ins. Press Ins again to return to the walk icon.

As soon as the peasant woman shows up, map away. Map to the Widow's cottage. Skip dialog. Map away.

Wait through the dream sequence. Skip what dialog you can.

# Day 2

Leave cave. Snowy Skip.

Map to Widow's cottage. Walk right, left, right. Press Ins to bring up the bow icon. (You should have stored this while waiting at the overlook on day 1. If you didn't, then right click to get to the bow.) Shoot the monk.

Map away once you regain control. (Much picks up the slipper for you, so you don't have to walk over to it.)

# Day 3

Leave cave. Map to overlook. Wait for beggar, map back to camp. Snowy skip Little John's dialog and walk to the cave. Put on the beggar disguise.

Map to Nottingham, go to the cobbler. Give him the slipper. Leave, map away.

# Day 4

Snowy Skip. Map to overlook. While waiting, open Inventory, select the comb, close Inventory. Press Insert to switch back to walk. Map away when peasant man shows up. Map to Willow Grove. Press insert, give Marian the comb. Map away.

# Day 5

Snowy skip. Map to Widow's cottage. Map to overlook.

Hold Enter to walk to the monks. You may get either the Fens Monk, or the Abbey Monk. It doesn't matter which. I'm going to write this as if you got the Fens Monk first, but if you get the Abbey monk, just switch Day 5 and 6 around.

Walk away from the Fens monk, up (or down) the road. Map back to camp. Wait until Little John is facing left, then Snowy Skip to the cave. If you do this too fast, you won't receive the gem bag or the reed, and won't be able to progress any further. If you're just starting out, feel free to skip the skip... so to speak.

Put on the Fens robes. Map to the Fens. Blow the reed. Hand on boat when you have control again. As you're being rowed, right click to select the reed. Give the reed to the monk at the front of the castle (you can hold Enter if you like). Give the bag of gems to to him as well, which will initiate the gemstone copy protection.

There are 16 riddles, and they are in a set order. The game picks the first riddle from the list at random. It will then pick the next two riddles in sequential order from the list. Instead of handling wrap-around, the RNG only picks from the first 14. It never starts with the last two questions. So, if you know the order of the riddles, once you get the first one, you know what the second and third will be. This is the order of the riddles:

Dethwing also put together a spreadsheet that simplifies this process. Find the first riddle in the first column. Then the next columns are the answers to all three riddles, given as numbers that correspond to the gems.

After solving three gemstone riddles, walk into the center of the castle. Skip dialog. Walk down. Walk to Fulk's torture chamber. Walk down. Walk to tower in the bottom right.

Grab Marian's hand scroll. The fastest way to do this is click walk near the shelves, then right click to the Eye icon while moving, then click on the shelves. Click the eye again on the bottom scroll in the middle. (You don't have to switch to the hand icon.)

Walk to chalice, hand on chalice. Hand on Fulk's scroll. Walk back to fulk, hand on wall device to free him. Give Fulk his scroll. 

Walk to the boat (or use the hand). Use the hand on the three faces to escape. The order, if we number them left-to-right, is 1-5-3.

# Day 6

Leave cave. Snowy Skip to save 0.5 seconds.

Map to overlook. If you hear the music cue, go down right away to Watling street. (We call this Insta-Monk.) If you don't get Insta-Monk, use the map, then map again to the overlook until you get it.

Walk away from the Abbey monk. Map to camp, Snowy Skip past Friar Tuck. Hand on Abbey monk robes. Leave cave.

What you're trying to do next is map into Nottingham and back to the main map screen 3 times. When you do this, the game assumes you don't know what you're doing, and your men will storm the castle to free the Widow's sons without you.

It technically doesn't matter which screen you go to in Nottingham, but here's a quick way, and what Snowy does in the current (as of this writing) world record:

Map to Nottingham, click on the castle. Press down on the keyboard. (Yes, keyboard movement works in this game, too!) Double click between the bridge and the town gate. (This will first take you to the main map, then back into the Nottingham map.) Repeat until the game puts you back at camp.

# Day 7
Map to Widow's cottage. Talk to her to get the golden net.

Map to Willow. Give hand scroll to Marian. 

Map to forest. Wait for the pixie (how long you have to wait is random). 

The pixie can only be caught by the net when he's running on the ground, not when he's flipping. This means that:

-If you run v1.0 unthrottled, you can only reliably catch the pixie when he runs from right-to-left, as he doesn't flip. He flips constantly running left-to-right.
-If you run v1.1 unthrottled, catching the pixie is nearly impossible because he flips all the time. This is why the rules for v1.1 require you to run in the official ScummVM, which is throttled.

If you miss the pixie, wait until he shows up again (you don't have to leave the screen). Alternatively, save every-so-often while waiting for the pixie, so you can reload. The direction of the pixie isn't determined until the last possible moment.

After you catch the pixie, you have to answer the Old Man Oak's riddles. Similar to the gemstones, the riddles are in a set order, as follows:

"Feather" is so long that it's faster to skip it than to spell it out. Skip by clicking outside of the hand. You can fail two riddles safely.

Map away.

# Day 8

Leave cave, Snowy Skip. Map to overlook, and wait for the yeoman. Once he shows up, map to camp. After you're wearing the outfit, Snowy Skip. Map to the Fair.

Walk to the farthest screen to the left (without going to the archery tournament). While walking, use insert storage to prep the hand scroll.

Cycle the screen repeatedly by pressing right and left. Cycling the screen makes Marian walk faster. (This only works when the game is unthrottled. Running v1.1 throttled, it looks like this actually makes Marian slower.)

After Marian leaves, find the scholar dressed in gray. Talk to him. This is supposed to be copy protection, but the correct answer (although randomized) is always the second coat-of-arms he shows you. Press Esc ("nay") and then Enter ("aye"). Show him the scroll. If you didn't Insert store the scroll, you have to go up to inventory to do this. This is the only time Tab doesn't work to open inventory. Accept the money from the scholar by pressing Enter. Map away.

# Day 9

Put on Puck outfit. Leave cave, Snowy Skip. 

Map to the bottom of Watling Street, then walk right, down, left. This skips the chase sequence.

Map to the castle. Bribe the guard with one penny. Leave room. Map away.

# Day 10

Leave cave. Open Fulk's scroll. The answer to the puzzle box is supposed to be found by looking at the first letter of each of the druidic tree names, in order. However, each answer has a unique starting letter, so you only need to look at the first line. For instance, if the first line has the tree name "Tinne," then you know the answer is TRANSFIGO, because that's the only answer that starts with "T".

Tab to open inventory. Hand on the fire ring. Select the horn, use it on Robin. It doesn't matter which plan you pick, as long as it's not Subterfuge.

**After saving Marian, make sure to wait one second at the textbox (the one on the black screen) to avoid a lockup at the heart gem cutscene.** Wait two seconds when you're first starting out if you're nervous.

Open inventory. Take off the fire ring, put on the water ring. Use the emerald on Marian. You can right-click to dismiss the first set of dialog. But then left-click through the rest at a moderate pace so you can *note Marian's password for the Queen's Knight.*

Note: if you get "LIEGE," Marian will tell it to you misspelled: "LEIGE." But the game wants it spelled correctly on day 13.

# Day 11

Snowy Skip.

Map to overlook. (This means that Will Scarlet doesn't have to walk into the screen, and Robin doesn't have to walk as far either.) Blow your horn. Pick Much's plan.

# Day 12
 
Snowy Skip. 

Map to the bottom of Watling Street, then walk right, down, left. This skips the chase sequence.

Map to the overlook. Walk to the false knight. Use the hand on yourself, and exit without spelling anything. This unlocks the map. Map away.

# Day 13

Snowy Skip.

Map to Fens. Talk to Will-o-the-wisps. Hand on boat.

There is a bias in the RNG for which of the three paths/exits they use. There is a 50% chance of right being the exit, 25% of up, 25% of left. You can also tell which direction they will go by their initial movement. If the wisps start by moving left, they take the right edge. If they move diagonally up-right (and don't touch the grassy bit), they will go left. And, finally, if they go straight right (and touch the grassy bit) they will go up. (Credit to dethwing)

Spell GORT to strengthen the ivy. Climb up. Spell out the password for the Queen's Knight. 

The list of possible passwords to give the knight at the end are as follows:

General Tips

The game runs fastest on UrQuan's ScummVM with speed throttling disabled. Version 1.1 (a later release and the one bundled with the GOG distribution) *cannot* be completed with this setup, as you will never be able to catch the pixie. Using version 1.0 solves this problem.

Tab opens inventory.

Insert sets the cursor to Walk (or the last cursor you selected if the walk cursor is already displayed).

Holding Enter fires the selected cursor repeatedly and skips textboxes.

Remapping keys is allowed with a program like AutoHotKey. You could, for example, remap Enter to W and Insert to Q so that all three main inputs (Tab, Enter, Ins) are next to each other and you don't have to jump all over the keyboard. Macros are *not* allowed.

On Day 1, to discover the overlook, click on the street next to the overlook in your map, and then walk right. This avoids having to walk through the forest.

On Day 3, after putting on the beggar disguise, the game turns down the speed slider in the background (possibly to better simulate the beggar's walk). Speed can be adjusted with the plus (+) and minus (-) keys on the numpad, so it is not necessary to go into the menu to put the speed back up. (This strat is no longer needed now that we map away when the beggar appears.)

On Day 6, there's a 50% of the monk showing up instantly, and a 50% chance of having to wait for 10-20 seconds. If the monk doesn't show up right away, map away and map back. 

(On Day 5, the monks always show up instantly the first time. If you leave and come back, Day 5 starts working the same way as Day 6.)

At the Fen's Monastery gemstone puzzle, the game picks the first riddle from a list at random. It will then pick the next two riddles in sequential order from the list. Instead of handling wrap-around, the RNG only picks from the first 14. It never starts with the last two questions. So, if you know the order of the riddles, once you get the first one, you know what the second and third will be. The order of the list is in each of the route guides. 

Similarly, the oak tree riddles are in a particular order. The game chooses one at random, and then goes down the list. You can fail two riddles and still survive. The order of the list is also in the route guides.

At the fair, as long as you are speaking with the correct scholar (the one in gray robes), the answer to the coat-of-arms is always "Nay" and then "Aye."

Immediately after rescuing Marian, if you dismiss the textboxes too quickly (and are running UrQuan's ScummVM) the game will lock up after it plays the emerald / heart cutscene.
