Speedrun of Below the Root on Apple II played within the AppleWin emulator. This run was recorded on March 19th 2019.

This speedrun takes advantage of a glitch I found in 7th grade while playing this game at school on an actual AppleII. It involves ejecting the game disk while switching screens. In the emulator I am pressing a button in the emulator UI which swaps the disk between drive 1 and drive 2, but the same effect is generated when simply ejecting the disk during play.

When the disk is ejected the game still keeps track of what screen you should be on, but does not actually load the next screen. By placing the character on a screen that is directly above the final rooms of the caves leading to Rammo I am able to trick the game into thinking I am down in the caves without actually walking there. At the right moment I insert the disk again and the game loads my character into the caves. You cannot see because I don't have a honey lamp lit, but it's easy to memorize this stretch of cave.

I choose the character Charn because his house is very close to the vertical position needed to get to Rammo. There is also a screen that you can repeatedly fall through in order to quickly get into the caves with the eject glitch.

When you finally do get to Rammo you again eject the disk and use the wrap around effect of the glitch to reach Rammo without the kiniport ability. Fortunately the actual cave that Rammo resides in is not actually at the bottom of the map in game memory but is directly above the Star Grund. When we do the wrap around glitch we drop into the top of Star Grund within game memory which is why the lights turn on all of a sudden.
