PC Speedrunning Patch Release & Rule Update
Posted 1 year ago by

Hi all, an important and hopefully exciting update for you today!

PC Speedruns of The Hobbit have long been plagued by strange inconsistencies between hardware - the most obvious instance being with longjumps. Some player experience long jump glitch which will at best slow them down and at worst kill their run, while others have longjumps that go significantly further than the average, making some tricks become much easier and their movement speeds up by default. It's unrealistic to expect every PC runner to play on the exact same hardware and even then that might not solve the issue. We don't want this hobby to become an expensive game of hardware roulette, so I am happy to share with you: The Hobbit Speedrun Patch for PC!

This patch does just one thing: lock the game's physics to it's (already locked) frame rate. This means everyone should experience the same physics. This is a must to keep the leaderboard competitive and the speedrun accessible. From now on this patch will be mandatory for any PC runs on the main leaderboard. Any runs prior to this announcement won't be affected. We'll be carefully monitoring any issues that might pop up.

You can get the patch right now. Either run HobbitInstaller (https://github.com/milankarman/HobbitInstaller/releases/tag/v1.0.2) or get the manual patch from the SRC resources (https://www.speedrun.com/hobbit/resources). You'll know your installation is successful when you see "SRPatch 0.2" on your main menu.

That's all, hopefully you're all as excited for this as I am. A massive shoutout to MD_Pi; without her insight and prior work I wouldn't have been able to make this.
