thanks for the suggestion; I think 100% is a reasonable category to add for this game given the stipulation you mentioned. let me add that category. looking forward to seeing your run!
hi, apologies for the long inactivity. categories have been reconfigured. unfortunately, the minigames couldn't be transferred to the Levels leaderboard due to src category assignment limitations. was looking to add an any% category for time-based minigames, and a high score% category for high score-based ones, but src would only be able to present it such that each minigame had both these categories.
as a result, only all map-based runs were transferred into the Full game runs leaderboard, while the minigame speedruns and mingames highscores remained in the Full game runs leaderboards.
i've heard retrospy is your best bet for something like this so here are a couple links you can check out
- this one is the DIY version: https://retro-spy.com/wiki/nes-on-arduino-getting-started/
- this one is the premade version if im not mistaken: https://retro-spy.com/product/complete-nes-input-display-setup/
there may or may not be some other alternative that im not aware of, but this should be a good starting point. hope this helps!
hi!! filipino speedrunner specializing in super mario bros. 1, 2u, 2j, and 3 :>
iirc, it's not necessarily a four frame jump; it can be less than that. i didn't hear about it being a 4 frame jump until now. just do a flick jump and there's a nice audio cue that i follow and it works beautifully. even then, you can do the safer strat where you stomp on the koopa and kick it to the bro or carry the shell and collide with the bro
same thoughts with windward. i know there's a bunch of runs in the leaderboard that do netplay on nestopia
good point. when the leaderboards were set up, the minigames were not included. and then since there's a demand for the individual minigames, we decided to include them. however, despite them being more appropriately belonging in the levels leaderboard, we thought of putting them on the full game leaderboard so that it's more easily accessible. I'm not sure if that is still the case now that src has drastically changed its UI and i haven't dabbled the configuration for the levels categories
[edit: checked the leaderboard view and it's not as bad as it was before. i feel like it's easier to access the levels leaderboard now. in which case, will need to work on adjusting the categories]
update: i've added the minigames fractured faces, pack and pile, and sandy search
however, i am planning to migrate all speedrun-based categories to a new parent category called Minigame Speedruns. this is to make way for possibly another parent category called Minigame Highscores
as always, thank you all for your anticipation and patience!
good point. i think i've seen src leaderboards go for high score. let me take a closer look though
I've thought about that but the game keeps on updating its minigames, albeit not often. however, a solution might be adding subcategories for the version. will do more research on how other party games do their leaderboards. thank you for the suggestion
will take a closer look into those games. thanks for you suggestion! some of them do look like can be speedrun material (as you pointed out in Sandy Search) while some others look like more of a high score thing than speedrun (take for instance Batty Batters. that minigame afaik goes on until the timer stops, but you can get a high score from precise timing of the bat)
i do forwards walljump so it eliminates the "randomness" of the subpixels/subspeed that will allow you to perform the walljump. that makes it only two frame perfect inputs: the first jump when you just enter the room, and the walljump. if you notice that you fail that first jump, it would help if you troubleshoot your error. maybe you're jumping too early or too late. you don't want to be doing the same thing that fails anyways so it's important to have an idea what you need to adjust. i remember when i would think of an imaginary line on the floor as a visual cue when to press jump to account for the input delay when i was using an emulator. but when i switched to console a couple of years ago, it was a long adjustment period for me. even now, i still have troubles here and there
even for high level runners, the walljump room is always the most challenging one when doing 8-4. so that's all i can say, just keep on practicing, and make the necessary adjustments, and more practice. and finally, you can do this. mindset is also important. you practice to make it when it matters most. those categories already exist individually. if you happen to have a speedrun of that stipulation, you can submit on both leaderboards.
the mod team isn't really accepting new categories anymore unless there is notable interest from the smb1 community
hi! so ive just started revisiting this game to try to finish it after getting stuck somewhere in the middle almost 20 years ago 💀 and i was wondering how runners get to speed up the game (im planning to speedrun this game after finishing it casually)
reading from the leaderboard rules, it has something to do with the Ctrl key but id like to know how exactly it can be used for speedrunning purposes. thank you in advance for the help 😀
hi! this can be submitted in the main leaderboard under any% i believe. ive seen runs submitted using a guitar hero guitar as a controller so your UForce run would be a good addition to the gimmick runs in the leaderboard. that said, it most definitely does not need to be a new category extension of U-Force any%
it's a wrong warp glitch. you scrolled the screen so far to the right that the game thinks that it should still be sending you to the coin heaven instead of the underground coin cache because the latter hasn't been loaded yet. it's done in various forms to go to the next area faster like in any% 4-2 to warp zone and in aisson 8-4 to second room
hello! i've added the categories on the main leaderboard for the applicable minigames :)
yes you did. GGs man. you got R10 on the upper right as well, which is the usual R for 8-3 fpg, although sometimes it's R9 if slower FPG
if you're just grinding for an IL, any framerule would be fine. if the second set of bros has one on top, you can try to manip by bopping the parakoopa before the second set (usually the one when you're still going up on your jump)
